At the brother's reunion in Calgary a couple years back Marty painted six pictures (he didn't know we had a long lost brother who would show up or else I'm sure he would have painted seven, so we had to tell him to get lost). This is the picture I chose, I included my hand in the photo so you can appreciate the size.

Merry Christmas Eve Everyone,
Ed,
Thanks for the picture of Marty's miniature - another awesome creation. Apparently, that long lost brother saw the other 5 that Marty did at that re-union, and passed his impression on to me. He was awe struck!
Another favorite Columbo moment:
A pilot asked Columbo if he wanted to go up in his plane. Columbo answered, no, because he was afraid of high places. " In fact", he said, " I'm not even comfortable being as tall as I am! " ( I think he's about 5' 7"
Thanks everyone,
ME xoxoxoxoxoxox
Welcome back Edward, and thanks for the picture and for part 7. The picture is awesome--what an artist Marty is!
I like Princess Bride, too. It is one of the 2 videos I have bought. Any of the others, I just rent.
I am going to try to get a copy of Trying. I had not heard of it, but it sounds intriguing.
It is great that everyone got over to Rob's yesterday. Vic told me about it and said what a good time everyone had.
I love both the Columbo moments--yours and Mary Ellen's. I had forgotten them, but they came back when you wrote them. I am going to try to think of some myself. I saw every episode so I should be able to come up with at least one quote.

Columbo moment #3:
My wife says I'm the second smartest. She says there are 80 guys tied for first.
BJ
Thank you for sharing the bunny painting pic, Ed, and thank you especially for creating a new chapter. This dial-up connection (yes there are still parts of the world that don't have high-speed) is killing me. It got to the point I was having to try to load it 2 or 3 times. You'll notice I didn't complain, though. Guess I'm really settling into this boonie lifestyle... think I'll go ice fishing, it's a balmy day here in the Qu'Appelle Valley (that means somewhere in the range of -8 C, Kbub).
Thomas,
Good to see you didn't get the shameless, whining gene from your parents. It's also good to know that you are enjoying your new home and lifestyle. I hope you and Lorraine have a great Christmas and restful holiday.
Mom
Yes, BJ, watching Columbo with you when I was young is what makes it Comfort TV. Anyone who has ever watched TV or movies with me will attest (askLorraine) that I have very little patience for lazy scripting, marginal acting and unbelievable denouement which goes like this: A detective, bereft of actual evidence, has to settle for a five-minute expositive monologue that evokes a spontaneous and complete confession from the typically wealthy suspect.
Nevertheless, because of the circumstances of my Columbo indoctrination, I suspend my disbelief and put my writing sensibilities on the shelf and simply enjoy. What it did have going for it was great characterization.
I wouldn't put Princess Bride in the category of Comfort TV, personally, but it is one of a handful of movies I can watch over and over and over again, simply because it is uncategorically brilliant.
The Godfather is another. Filmmaking at it's absolute zenith.
Merry Christmas everyone. We're not going to make it to Midnight Mass in Regina. We'll probably go to the 7:30 in Fort Qu'Appelle and we'll say a little prayer for Grandma and Grandpa.
Merry Christmas Eve from us in Ottawa to all of you in Regina, Fort Qu'appelle, Saskatoon, Calgary, British Columbia, California, Texas, London ON, and Scotland. We wish you joy and peace at this special time of year.
Love, BJ and Bob
Lucy here, on Christmas Eve
... fittingly enough, I found Grandma's prayer for us in her journal entry dated February 15, 1992 in which she wrote:
"I like the following quotation so much I wanted to copy it so I don't forget it. I got it from the Guideposts, February 1992. It was sent by Barbara M. McLeod, Cheyenne, Wyoming.
It's a lovely blessing I ask for my family and for myself....
'I will not wish thee riches nor the glow of greatness
But that wherever thou go some weary heart shall gladden at thy smile
Or shadowed life know sunshine for a while.
And so thy path shall be a track of light,
Like angels' footsteps passing through the night.' "
Tonight we attended a candle-lit carol service in St. Leonard's Chapel, the oldest church still in use in St. Andrews. The candles in the chandeliers and wall mounts were real and they provided the only light in that old stone church as the sun went down. The atmosphere was reverent and magical.
It's already 10:30 pm here. We'll be five, six, seven and eight hours into Christmas before the 25th begins for others in our family.
Merry Christmas one and all!
Cheers to you with lots of love,
Louise and David
Merry Christmas Eve from Austin.
Three grocery stores today and no pause in cooking in between. More tonight and tomorrow. I had to take a break and sit for a minute (and check the blog... ya, you know what I mean). I won't complain, since cooking and listening to carols reminds me of family far away.
Thomas, what is this "dialup" thing you keep talking about? Sounds like some ancient torture device. And what does it mean when you put a hyphen in front of a temperature?
KB
Kbub, archeologists are still divided on the exact nature of dial-up, but imagine (if you can):
A device connected to your computer called a "modem" connected to an analogue copper telephone line actually dials a telephone number. The "call" is answered on the other end by another "modem." The two "modems" send control singles back and forth until the connection is harmonized usually at (you're not going to believe this) 56 kilobytes per second.
It's not a hyphen, it's a minus sign. It's akin to what's happening inside your freezer. Take a look inside and you'll probably find some ice cubes, which is frozen water. Now try to picture an entire lake like those little cubes.
Like I say, it was really mild today. -8 was actually with the wind chill. The still temperature was 0 (32F).
Enough of this blurking! Merry Christmas everyone!

Merry Christmas everyone! Hugs and love from Calgary to all of you everywhere!

Ah.... the quiet of Boxing Day! It's apparent even on the family blog site.
Today David and I have worked on a 1000 piece jigsaw of the layout of The Old Course, surrounded by various features of St. Andrews and golf history.
Our neighbours, Peggy, Isles and Margaret, gave us the puzzle for Christmas. When we finish it, we intend to glue the collage together and put it on display for family members, golfers and others, who will visit us here in the future.
What have you been doing today?
Love, Lucy
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
I had a lot of catching up to do. I've been playing for Christmas parties for the last week.
We are doing a puzzle today also. I wish it was The Old Course.
We are excited about having Lou and Marie amd Tricia and Bob and Mary Ellen over for dinner tomorrow.
Love to all,
Marty and Karen nad Keaghan
Ha! We're doing a puzzle too: Monaco.
Marty, I envy you your house guests. Johanne's twin sister was supposed to visit, but she bailed. Then another of her sisters thought she'd come down, but she bailed too. We're having a pleasant, calm holiday, but it sure would be better with family.
Love and cheer to everybody, Kenneth and Johanne
I just got back from icefishing. Still haven't caught anything. I must be the worst icefisherman in the world.
We're also having a very quiet boxing day.
Dave is putting the last few pieces into our puzzle while I'm catching up on the blog.
Don't blame yourself, Thom. Maybe the fish know it's Boxing Day, too. Did you check with the locals to make sure that the lake is stocked with fish?
Dave says to tell you that he can recommend a good fishmonger in Fife.
Luce
BTW Thom,
Your reply to Kenneth about modems and minus signs is very funny. Ice-fishing may be at the bottom of your list of talents, but writing is definitely at the top.

Happy December 27, everyone.
Lucy and Dave,
Mary-Ellen's computer is down, so I read her your birthday greeting;she was very happy with it and says thank you.
Martin and Karen,
Mary-Ellen says she is really looking forward to tonight; they always have fun at your place.
We went to Stephen and Mona's on Christmas Eve, and Louise and Steve's on Christmas Day. Today we are back to our regular routine. We hope everyone had a very good Christmas.
Love, BJ
Happy holidays everyone. It’s been so long since I’ve blogged, I’m not sure if I can even sign on. Maybe after I retire, I’ll participate more. I’m not good at contests, though! I’m working through the holidays but there are just 100 more sleeps until I retire. ‘Not that I’m counting or anything. I like “Little Shop of Horrors”, the musical, with Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, John Candy, James Belushi and Bill Murray to name a few. I also love Oasis HD. That’s High Definition TV, Thom. I think it’s planned for your area around 2060. We had 14 for Christmas dinner: our children, their children, Ron’s sister, her children and their children and Ron’s Mom. Thanks to Bonnie and Rob for the great party on Sunday! If you’re painting, Marty, I think you have 7 long lost brothers. We’ll dress up if we have to.
Louise, I hope everyone gets to view your puzzle in your home.
xo Christine
Hi, Christine
Thanks for taking time to blog. Our puzzle of St. Andrews is finished, glued and ready for hanging. We'd like nothing better than to show it to visitors and to encourage them to explore the history and/or the links in person. We try hard to be good tour guides, as you and Ron know from personal experience.
Your Christmas celebration was certainly a big, happy family gathering. Tell JJ that we are keeping our eyes open for the highland coo he requested. (How can they be so hard to find in the land of their origin?)
Don't wait until you retire to log on again. A quick "hello" is all it takes to transform you from a blurker to a blogger.
LOL, Lucy
Lucy again,
BJ ... it was kind of you to relay our birthday greetings to ME on her special day. I know what it's like to lose that computer link with family and friends. Yuck!
We had a great Christmas here in The Steading. Our neighbours, Peggy, Isles and Margaret invited us for lunch. They not only treated us to turkey and all the trimmings but they had gifts for us to open, conversation for us to share and the Queen's annual TV greeting to top off the day.
Later that night we talked to Alan and Paul on the phone and had calls from both of David's brothers, Christopher and Peter. The 25th was full of the love of friends and family from beginning to end.
Now...onwards to a brand new year!
I've now had a chance to catch up on the blog and found it quite entertaining. I just hope no-one noticed me laughing to myself.
Thomas, I do enjoy your dialogue because you are definitely a cut above when it comes to writing.
I think that is why I laughed the hardest when you described the interaction between the modems as singles instead of signals. At least I think that is what you meant!?
Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying the season and hope everyone has a happy and healthy new year.
Lucy here...
Year 2007 is drawing to a close. In these last few days we'll all be looking back a bit, at the same time as we are moving forward.
Here's a Game of Gratitude for us to play. We'll use Grandma's alphabet format ... one letter at a time, from A to Z.
I'll start by choosing something for which I am thankful beginning with the letter A. The next person must use B and so on down the line. If we reach Z before New Year's Eve we can start over at A.
Anything goes ... from the sublime to the ridiculous. If we get this game off the ground, bets are on that we will laugh more than we will cry.
Okay... here goes...thanks for...

Kenneth,
We had breakfast in Scotland while listening to your recording of Isaac Albinez's El Puerto. We have no idea why we feel so proud of you, but we do. Bravo!
Right away we wanted to know more about the composer and about the composition you are playing. We googled and discovered that your site is already listed among others that feature El Puerto.
Once again, you have opened up a whole new world for us to explore and enjoy. Thank you.
Love, Louise and David
OOps I hope I can be forgiven for misplacing the vowels in Albeniz's name. This is all so new to me.

Melissa ... Welcome back to the blog. We had a feeling that you might be blurking, but busy. You sure made a splashing re-entry with your complimentary alphabet of thanks. Don't stop now!
Ed ... You finished off my latest challenge with flourish and skill. You definitely have a way with words!

Okay ... enough thinking.
On the eve of year 2008, let's inspire one another with a catchy quotation. The shorter the better!

18. 5 digits in a zip code.
That's 20 down and four to go.
Holy cow, Ed, I missed a whole bunch of postings AGAIN.
12. 200 Dollars for passing go in Monopoly
18. 5 digits in a Zip Code (US)
Thanks BJ, we would never have guessed the one about monopoly.
Do you know numbers 8 and 13, too?
Dave and Louise
8. 12 stripes on the American Flag
I'm still pondering #13.
Gosh the answers seem simple when you see them in print!
What can 8 S on a S S be????
It's the last one. Anybody???
8 Stacks on a steam ship?
I'm just guessing.
We're doing the same thing:
Maybe 8 souls on a slippery slope?
or 8 sounds on a simple scale?
How about 8 stops on a Spanish Subway?
I was thinking flags for number 8, but there are 13 stripes on the American Flag, not 12.
8 sides on a stop sign!
Of course, Kenneth! Thank you! Now we can finally get some sleep. We weren't letting go of this one very easily.
Now there must be another answer for 12 S on the A F. Have you got that one yet?
Good night, folks.
LOL, Lucy
Oh Oh. Typo.
it should have been 13 s on the a f for number 8. I have double checked all the others and they are good to go.
That was way too easy for you people.
That's funny, Ed
The one entry that we thought had a typo error was 1 W on a U. We were intent on making it 1 horn on a unicorn until David thought of a unicycle and realized the W was a wheel. After that we never doubted your accuracy.
BTW, easy is a relative term. We had fun. Thanks for the diversion.

PS:
Please excuse my own typo error. I put 19 days in a Leap-year February instead of 29! You obviously knew what I meant and overlooked the mistake.

Thanks for the puzzle, Edward. That was fun.

SUNDAY MORNING! And, amazingly, Canada Post was delivering parcels today! Because the parcel arriving today was from Marty, Betty Jo actually let me open it! Marty, the seascape is marvelous and you, of course, are wonderful for creating it. Even framed! Every whinge was worth it! We will hang it in a most conspicuous place.
Thank you! Thank you! A thousand thank you's!!!

Congratulations, Bob!
Your excitement at the arrival of your MSA original is contagious. We share your surprise at receiving the parcel on Sunday Morning and your thanks for Marty's generous prize awards.

Hey Bob
You are very welcome. I am glad that you like your painting. You are allowed to sell it, if you get a good offer for it.
Like I said before, the contest was a lot of fun for me also, and since "Oct - Dec" is busy painting time for me, I just may have an annual contest. I love getting many contestants.
I have one painting left to do for the contest and that is Luke's. He wants a white tiger. My stampede submissions have to be in by Jan 9 so I won't be able to start on the tiger until the tenth. I hope you are okay with that Luke. (let's see if he actually sees this message).

Holy Moly! It's like pre-reunion days on the blog!
Had heard but didn't know attribution to Luce's "Life is uncertain - eat dessert first!"
Apparently, according to the Internet, it was American author Ernestine Ulmer, whom I know nothing about.
I immediately recognized Marty's "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity...and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein and ain't it oh, so true.
Abraham Lincoln also had something to say on the subject:

Lucy again,
This has been a quiet New Year's Eve day for us. We went for a long walk through the town, shopped for a few groceries, stopped in at the home of friends for coffee and returned to The Steading in time for supper.
It's 5:00 pm now. We are hours ahead of the rest of you on the march to midnight.

Marty and you other Calgarians, I know how that rice crispie Christmas tree felt because Christine (James’ wife) made one for us on Christmas day. It brought tears to my eyes (a very rare occurrence these days).

Cheers, love and best wishes to you and to those who celebrate with you today.

Happy 31st Birthday, David!
Your family will have double the celebration on this, your New Year's Day birthday.
We are sure that Barbara, Emmanuel, Grace-Anne and Hannah-Lynn will make this day special for you just by being present in your life and loving you as another year begins.
Happy 2008! God bless you!

Thom,
Thanks for ringing in the New Year for us. The blog countdown was clever, the timing was CST perfect and the singing was nostalgic.
Well done ... and all the best to you, too!
Luce
And a Happy and Healthy 2008 to everyone!
Bob
Hi Bob,
Seeing your greeting here on the blog reminds me to tell you that I finally got your terrific picture of Mom, mattings and all, framed and hung in our St. Andrews home. Thank you for giving me this recent, warm and happy image of her.
Louise
Happy New Year everyone. May this be the first day of a new and wonderful time in your life.

Thomas,
Lui can tell you why your post is BC time. He told us once, but I have forgotten. If you look, you will see that all our posts are on BC time.
Love, Mom
P.S.
It is 10:28 Ottawa time.
Hello and Happy New Year everyone! Uncle Ed posted a new thread for the new year, so I posted over there this morning, but I wanted to wish you all a Happy New year here and say we'll see you over on the new thread!
