WHERE, WHAT, WHEN, WHO, WHY?

Where was the 3rd boxcar of the midnight train headed?

What have these in common?

a walk in the park
a kiss in the dark
a sailboat ride

When will a man give up all his comforts and sleep out in the rain?

Who can take you on a trip on a magic swirling ship?

Why is it now or never?

Good morning, Ed
This fool cannot answer even one of your April 1st questions!

I hear a song or two coming on, though. I'm sure there are blogatives out there who will know the WHERE, WHAT, WHEN, WHO AND WHY of your latest post.

I'll blurk around to see if I'm right.

LOL, Lucy

Mr. Tambourine Man will take you on a trip on his magic swirling ship (When? Why, in the jingle jangle morning, of course!).

I have had an earworm going on this one for over an hour now.

It's now or never because ... tomorrow will be too late ...my love can't wait.

Ed,
A walk in the park, a kiss in the dark and a sailboat ride are all on the list of "the things we used to do".

Now, we should put them back on the 'list of things to do'......

Impressive! See what you can do with these.

WHERE, WHAT, WHEN, WHO AND WHY? Level II

Where does earth's moon cease to move?

When can you glimpse magenta hued drapery?

What can you do when the moon and stars lose their luster?

Who's the only girl for me?

Why can't I go?

Louise and David said...

Wow, Ed, level II is really tough. Even Google is having a hard time locating the answers.

I guess we'll have to wait for blogatives who are really into music to come up with the answers to your latest WHERE, WHEN, WHAT, WHO and WHY questions.

Lucy

Sonia said...

Those are very hard....
Is there not some song that says something about 'jingle gee' or something being the only girl for me??

poor attempt, i know.

Louise and David said...

You never know, Sonia, your vague suggestion may help someone else track down the right answer.

Unfortunately, I am not that someone else.
Louise

When can you glimpse magenta hued drapery?

I'll hear you, my dear, at Twilight Time."

See, I knew Ed's Level II clues would need Level III solvers. Nice work, Kenneth! One down and four to go.

I don't have an earworm going on any of these tunes, Ed.
Lucy

Holly Gustafson said...

Oh, these are tough. Where's Uncle Lui?

Louise and David said...

I'm wondering the same thing, Holly. And what about Marty. He knows a bunch of these tunes, too. Help!

Why can't I go?
Because I'm Joe Strummer and I can't decide.

"Should I stay, or should I go?"

Nice work on Twilight Time Kbub.

The only girl for me is from your neck of the woods too.

Sorry Stephen I can't give it to you. You probably load this much in a day too.

I wonder where Lou and Marty are?

Even Ed's extra clues did not help me to get the answers. Yet, when you came up with the appropriate songs, I recognized them right away.

I wonder what Ed will do for Level III.

LOL, Lucy

Louise and David said...

Somewhere out there in blogland, Marcia and Dennis are celebrating their 37th wedding anniversary today. We know that because we are coming up to our 38th in August. Cheers and lots of love!

ed said...

Four down - 1 to go

Blueberry Hill is correct but it's another day older for the other.

kbub said...

Sixteen Tons

I can't go because I owe my soul to the company store.

Louise and David said...

Oh, brother, I would never have tracked down Sixteen Tons. Ed is very clever with his clues, though, and the music buffs in the family have come through again.

Good eye, Kenneth!
Lucy

ed said...

OK music buffs. It's over. This will be the last puzzle from Eddie boy for a while. It's income tax time and I'm a worried man. I know, I know, with all the talent in the family for numbers and bookkeeping...easy peasy. Geez we got a million accountants. Unfortunately I'm not one of them. It's April 3rd already, I should have started the day before yesterday to get it done by the 30th. When it comes to money I'm the poster boy for bad investments...I'm the eskimo who will buy snow...you can find my description in the book between idiosyncrasy and imbed. However, I do like to think I have a knack for puzzles. I'm looking for song titles this time. Hey, if you can get Lou and Marty to help chances are you'll solve them easily. I do have a sneaky suspicion you'll be doing some googleing so don't expect exact lyrics in

WHERE, WHAT, WHEN, WHO, WHY?
Level III

WHERE? The UK, that's where it's rumored he started wearing dark glasses on stage. This song hit number 1.

WHAT? A folk song sung by Woody, Van and Mel to name a few.

WHEN? It was 1964 when this group made their first trip to the USA. This song may be the most covered song in history.

WHY? Because when I saw this song it reminded me of Vic.
A Grammy Winner.

WHO? The only performer with four!!! This # 1 was written in 1911.

Lui said...

Ah I missed the contests$%^%#@&$*$^

Quickly, I'll take a look at the others but When is Yesterday by the Beatles of course.

Lui said...

Why? Chances are....?

Johnny Mathis was always Vic's favorite.

b@bigdog said...

bcsrhtmsngdarn, i was so busy promoting my own music, i missed out on the lyrics contest

bring on level III, ed

btw, the new CDs have left the factory... woo hoo

Lui said...

Or is that It's not for me to say?

Johnny did them both. Right Vic!

ed said...

Whoa!! What did I say about Lou helping out.

Yesterday... of course.

Johnny Mathis...yes...but don't guess, the clues are there. Which one?

Lui said...

It's not for me to say!

ed said...

No...look again

Lui said...

Sorry Ed. Thinking about it, it must be:

Why? ' Cause I where a silly grin

Obviously.... Chances Are!

ed said...

That's right.

Actually the why? is because it made me think of Vic.

Like I said, the answers are there.

Louise and David said...

Wow, even the experts have to guess sometimes. That makes those of us who can't even guess feel a little better!
LOL, Lucy

Louise and David said...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NATHAN!

We are posting wishes for you even though you are probably not even a blurker on Ed's Edition. Now that Christine is retired, maybe she will drop in on the blog and relay our greetings to you.

We can't help but think that you will probably have the best birthday meal without leaving your own kitchen. We toast your good appetite and birthday fun!

Cheers to you, Nathan!
Louise and David

ed said...

Should I apologize for the preamble? I usually just present the puzzle. No... I don't think I will.

Oh...the who?... that would be four music Hall of Fame inductions.

ed said...

Huh? Did you see that? WHY? is out of order. Hmmm? Damn those hidden clues.

Louise and David said...

Ed, the clues are so well hidden that I'm not even aware they are there. I sure hope the music experts come through on this one for you.

I finished my impossible jigsaw today. It's a mess of golf clubs lying every which way on a green background. I'm supposed to find 5 golf balls in the picture and I have not located one.

I'm missing all the clues today!

marty antonini said...

...what time is it?...

marty antonini said...

Where?

Roy Orbison "Pretty Woman"

walkin' down the street

Marty

kbub said...

WHO?

I'm thinking "I'm Henery the Eighth, I am", covered by Herman's Hermits. But the four HoF inductions suggests Beatles (one as a group + Paul, John and George solo).

What am I missing?

Anonymous said...

What?

This Land is our Land

Other notables: Bob, The Boss, the Kingston trio

ed said...

Don't let me mislead you, the WHERE, WHAT, WHEN, WHO and Why? have been answered.

Marty... Roy is right but "Pretty Woman"? uh uh. This is a level III puzzle, the clues are there, the answers are tough but they are right in front of you.

Kbub...not a group, this guy was a solo performer...You're missing the whole picture.

Stephen...Nope. I'm not aware of Bob or the Boss ever doing this one but the Kingston Trio did.

kbub said...

Ok. Guess number 2 for...

WHO?

Elvis Presley, "Surrender".

ed said...

Ok. Elvis is the man but I don't see Surrender as the tune.

BJ said...

Elvis had 4 inductions into halls of fame. Alexander's ragtime Band may be the song you are looking for.

Anonymous said...

What?

Tom Dooley

Anonymous said...

Who?

An Evening Prayer

ed said...

No...no...and no.

When you do a level III puzzle you always wonder if it's too tough. I thought I had given enough clues. I'll be glad when it's over. I was a worried man yesterday and chances are my suspicion will be my undoing. I'll give you tonight, I'll reveal the answers tomorrow.

marty antonini said...

It's gotta be

Roy's "Cryin" or "Only the lonely"

marty antonini said...

Hey Wait!

Where?..

Blue Bayou

I'm going back some day.

b@bigdog said...

Where: It's Over hit number 1 on the UK charts in 1964 for Roy Orbison

Who: It wasn't written in 1911 but I want to say Suspicious Minds because of your last clue... An Evening Prayer was written in 1911, but you already said no to that and I couldn't verify if it ever hit #1 for the King

What: Worried Man Blues or is it It Takes a Worried Man

Why: Unbreak My Heart wasn't a grammy winner for Johnny Mathis (or written by him), but it was for Toni Braxton

b@bigdog said...

oh yeah, and...

Yesterday, all my puzzles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though Ed has a say
In how I spend my holiday

Suddenly, I'm not doing half the things I need to be
There's a puzzle hanging over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly

Why he had to blog
I don't know
It's just his way
I logged on way too soon
Much to my dismay-ay-ay-ay

Yesterday, W-5 was so easy to play
Now the clues have all gone astray
Oh, I believe in yesterday

Yes, I believe in yesterday

Hello Betty Jo and others.

Below is a copy of my last entry. Also in the puzzle itself you will see I have already given you the answers.

When you do a level III puzzle you always wonder if it's too tough. I thought I had given enough clues. I'll be glad when IT'S OVER. I was a WORRIED MAN, YESTERDAY and CHANCES ARE my SUSPICION will be my undoing. I'll give you tonight, I'll reveal the answers tomorrow.

Thomas almost had it, Suspicion was written in 1911 by Italian lyricists Ernesto and B.G. de Curtis with the English lyrics written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman.

Of course he was wrong on Johnny Mathis but Lou had already answered Chances Are.

ed said...

OH YEAH!!!

DAMN THOSE HIDDEN CLUES.

We just love a celebration
And though BIRTHDAY's are our thing
We would like to start to mention
When the wedding bells should ring.

So, from here on in we'll greet you
On the day that you were wed.
Though we've missed a few for this year,
We would like to forge ahead.

Our family tree has told us,
Since the New Year's Eve was hot
That six couples were not mentioned
On the day they tied the knot.

Dustin/Kelly; Brant and Julie;
Louise/Stephen; Kelly/Tim;
Joanne and Kenneth Barker;
And the latest ones, just in!
On the second day of April
Also in the Barker crew
Mona and her husband Stephen
Had a celebration, too.

To these couples we send greetings!
We have marked your special date.
If the family blog continues
We will not again be late!

Cheers and best wishes,

This afternoon David will take part in a historic event on the Old Course. The 18 holes are being played in reverse order - the way the course was originally designed to be played.

Dave and his friends put their names into the ballot and got a 4:00 pm tee-off time. They are "over the moon" about being among the few who will get this year's privilege of experiencing the Old Course in this way.

Many of the senior men (in their 80's and 90's) will even being playing their commemorative rounds with the "hickories".

Lucy,
I am guessing that the 'hickories' are old gold clubs (perhaps made of hickory wood)?

Ed,
Thanks for the deletions.

Louise and David said...

Yes, BJ
Golf clubs were once made with hickory shafts. A few people still own sets of these clubs and they bring them out on special occasions. Today's backward round on the Old Course is one of those events.

Unfortunately, the weather is not cooperating. Selected golfers, including Dave and his two buddies, are still out doing their thing but they are playing in the wind and rain.

Dave's day on the links was rough and wet but he kept going for history's sake. He posted a gross score of 85 (net 72).

Page 4 is another story altogether, BJ. I am still laughing at some of the "Scraps and Scrapes" featured there. My favorite is the one about the new teacher and I share it here for those who do not receive the Bugle by mail.

"A school teacher injured his back and had to wear a plaster cast around the upper part of his body. It fit under his shirt and was not noticeable at all.

On the first day of the term, still with the cast under his shirt, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in the school. Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, he opened the window as wide as possible and then busied himself with desk work.

When a strong breeze made his tie flap, he took the desk stapler and stapled the tie to his chest.

Discipline was not a problem from that day forth."

I can set up a website for you: www.barkerbugle.ca is available

You guys are very funny. It seems that anything in life can provide material for a song.

BTW ... your mother compiles the monthly Barker Bugle. Talk to her!

Yesterday Dave was eliminated from the club competition that took him onto the Old Course. He reports that he was definitely out-played in the third round and he wishes his opponent well.

Far from discouraged, Dave has already signed up for next weekend's club event. His newly lasered left eye is matching the right's 20/20 vision.

Today we are keeping track of ...

The London Marathon where a 101 year old man has been given time off from his plumbing job to take part in the event. (His boss is his personal trainer).

The final game in World Curling. Canada plays Scotland for GOLD. Either way, we come out winners but our first love is for Canada. Go Martin!

Golf action at the Masters. The guys in the final pairing are a joy to watch. They are sure to have lots of competition from golfers currently in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th place, too.

It's a very good day for sports fans.

And don't forget that our Canadian Women's Hockey team won SILVER in Harbin, China yesterday! Congratulations to them too!

Louise and David said...

We missed that one, Bob,
Thanks for the update. How about those Canadian Teams on the world scene!

Cheers to Silver!

That's Gold for Canada at the World Curling Championship in Grand Forks, ND. It is also a first for Kevin Martin and his terrific team. Well done!

Say no more, Bob.

Cheers to the Canadian Men's Curling Team, celebrating GOLD today!

The Masters Green Jacket goes to Trevor Immelman, pride of South Africa today. It is Immelman's first Major win and he led the event from Day 1. He deserved this victory with Tiger Woods in a surprising 2nd place at the end of an "up and down" day.

b@bigdog said...

Yes, absolutely cheers to Trevor Immelman, a great champion, a tribute to the legendary Gary Player and a very touching moment in one of the grandest theatres of sport.

Congratulations to Scotland, too. For a fine silver finish in the curling worlds and for giving us all two of the greatest games on the planet.

BTW, if you've never seen the definitive explanation of the origin of golf, you must check it out:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=jThf7W9WONE

Finally, aside from all these great events, including our Silver in Women's hockey, isn't anyone following Champion's League football (that would be soccer for those of us over here in the "New World")?

That's right, $%#@ hockey. With the Sens out, it pains me to think I might have to cheer for Montreal (spit) in the Stanley Cup, but at least I won't have to watch any more games.

b@bigdog said...

Sorry, should have been a disclaimer on that Robin Williams video:

It's crude, but it's absolutely $#@%ing hilarious.

Tonight we went looking for the St. Andrew's harbour swan couple. Last year's four cygnets have been chased away by the cob. The pen is already busy building her nest in a sheltered spot a long way up the burn that spills into the harbour. We found her alone there, working hard, setting the stage for another dramatic cycle of life to unfold.

I saw a lady bug in Keenan's backyard yesterday..... as Keenan was BBQ'ing me and the kids some steak and burgers!!!

Gotta love this weather!

BJ said...

Hey Sonia,

I'll raise your ladybug with Bob's 3 crocuses--one purple, two white-- blooming in the front yard. Lots of tulips coming up too, but no blooms as yet. It isn't very warm though, and we still have several small piles of snow, the operative word being 'small'. Hooray for Spring in Ottawa.

Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Well, if ladybugs are crawling in Saskatchewan and crocuses are blooming in Ontario, then spring must have arrived in Canada. Watch out, though, Alberta may yet have one more winter storm to deliver.

Hi Auntie Louise,

I am taking a class on La Francophonie this spring and we were all assigned a country to find out if there are any french communities/villages/schools there - my assigned country is Scotland! So, are you aware of any francophone communities in Scotland?!

kbub said...

Hm. Where're all the solvers?

9. CHASES
10. DEARTH

Louise and David said...

Hi Holly,
I am not aware of any francophone communities or schools as such. However, a woman named Virginia Fowler, who lives here in The Steading is this year's Chair of an alliance between St. Andrews, Scotland and Loches in Touraine, France. It is a very active group that has been fostering cultural links and personal exchanges between the two medieval towns since 1997.

The towns are already informally "twinned" but the Alliance would like a permanent link to be made. I believe that other communities here in Fife are twinned with places in France.

Virginia will definitely know more. I can talk to her, if you like, or you may be able to connect with her yourself. Check www.saint-andrews.co.uk/town.htm and look under St. Andrews-Loches Alliance for other links.

BTW ... Virginia attends the University of St. Andrews which does, of course, have a French program.

Good luck!
Love, Louise
