WHERE, WHAT, WHEN, WHO, WHY?

Where was the 3rd boxcar of the midnight train headed?

What have these in common?

a walk in the park
a kiss in the dark
a sailboat ride

When will a man give up all his comforts and sleep out in the rain?

Who can take you on a trip on a magic swirling ship?

Why is it now or never?

Kenneth ... it seems you are on your own in solving the cryptic clues. You have answered two more correctly.

By way of review for those who want to pitch in: #1,2,3,9 and 11 are correct. The seven unsolved clues are #4,5,6,7,8,11 and 12. Good luck!

LOL, Lucy

Oops, I've been away from the blog too long. Another contest! It looks hard. I'll try one and work on the others.
12. MASSES

7. ALIGHT

BJ said...

4. SLOWER
7. SHOUTS

b@bigdog said...

Well, supposedly winter is finally coming to Saskatchewan this weekend. I guess it had to happen sooner or later.

Kbub, if I weren't so damn busy promoting YOUR album, I'd be all over solving that cryptic.

Louise and David said...

BJ ... I wondered where you were. You have correctly answered #7 and 12. I see you kept trying on 7 and came up with shuts + o to = shout. Somehow, with these cryptic clues, you just KNOW when your answer is right. Right?

Thom ... it's great that promotion of the new album is keeping you busy. I hope sales are hopping.

Lucy

BJ said...

Lucy,
Sorry, ALIGHT was meant for number 8.

BJ said...

Or maybe #8 is LOWERS

Louise and David said...

Hi BJ,
You don't have #8 yet. I guess these 6-letter answers are no easier than the 4-letter ones.
Lucy

Louise and David said...

Thom ... today, Royal Mail brought your CD to us in its special Saturday delivery service. Thank you!

When we opened the package the album was still in its cellophane wrap, unsigned by the artist. We will have to bring it with us when we come to Saskatchewan so that you can personalize our copy for us. Okay?

In the meantime, we are enjoying your music, on demand, as we so often do.

Love, Luce

Lucy,
I don't do this type of crossword often, but it is the one type that I work back and forward with instead of all the Across and then all the down or vice versa. You realize how difficult they are when you only have one clue and no other letters to help.
You may have to give us a letter or 2 to get us to solve them.

Louise and David said...

I know exactly what you mean, BJ:

Here are the crossing letters for these 5 clues:

4. L _ _ _ _ S

5. T _ _ O _ _

6. H _ _ _ L _

8. _ S _ _ _ E

11. _ _ C _ _ T

Good luck!
Lucy

This is my last attempt:
4. LAYERS
5. THEORY
6. HURTLE
8. ASHORE
11. SACHET

Louise and David said...

Hi BJ ... you answered 4 of the last 5 clues correctly. The answer to #6 should be HANDLE (land + he).

Good eye! Love, Lucy

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARTIN!

The idea of a spring time birthday in Texas is especially warm and appealing to your northern blogatives. Enjoy!

Here's hoping that this 36th birthday celebration is one of the best for you. Cheers!

Warm wishes and lots of love
across the miles today,

What? No posts for April 20?

Me and the boys are in Montreal. The weather is great here! We spent Saturday checking out the sites of Old Montreal. Took a horse-drawn carriage ride, kids really enjoyed that. We went to the Bascilica - amazing. Tricia, we lit a candle and said a prayer for you...

We shopped a bit today, hit the courts for some practice. We are about 25 minutes walking distance from the club, so we have been getting lots of exercise walking and have great weather - i know i mentioned that already. I hear the weather has been all over the map in Alberta! We connected in Calgary on Friday and we were about 35 minutes late getting away as it was snowing and they had to de-ice the plain...

Tomorrow, before practice, we are going to hit St. Catherines.

Once Tuesday hits (that is when the games start) we won't see much outside the inside of the court club! I am sure we will sneak some shopping in at the Champlain Mall as it is about a 5 minute walk from the club.

Have a great week everyone and I will blurk when I can!

Sonia

Sonia said...

ok, how did that happen? there were no posts when i checked the blog...before i blogged. but they must have been there. i must have been so excited to blog i didn't give the computer enough time to load all the entries.

oh well. i guess i got overlyblogbitious

Louise and David said...

Hi Sonia,
It's nice to know that you are dropping in on the blog even while you are in Montreal. You and the boys travelled east at a good time, weatherwise. We'll be watching for sports reports once the games begin tomorrow. Good luck!

With regard to entries on the blog, now that we have made more than 200 comments you have to click on "newest" to see the most recent ones. I don't know how that happened but it is a bit confusing when you first sign on to the blog.

BTW ... I think you may have coined a new word in being overly blogbitious.

Louise

BJ said...

New word noted and added to Blexicon.
It's a new week. Where is everybody?
We are enjoying spring. Unlike Calgary, we get our snow in the winter time.
Don and Vic are in BC and won't be back until April 27.
Love, BJ

BJ said...

BTW, Lucy....did you hear any more about the contest you entered? I suppose they put the entries of everyone with the correct answers in a hat and draw a winner, but it would be interesting to know if the answers were correct.

Louise and David said...

Hi, BJ
The Toys and Games contest ends on May 1st. After that I can get an answer key even if I don't win the £10 prize. I'll keep you posted.

I thought Vic and Don were due back on the 20th. Another week is wonderful for them!

Lucy

marty antonini said...

Hey Guys

Vic and Don are still in Radium Hot Springs. They had car trouble so they will spend another week there. I might be joining them on Thursday. They have become good friends with John Cronin. John plays guitar at the jam in Fairmont, close to where Vic and Don stay. They go to the jam every year on Thursday night. John and I used to play with Ian Tyson many years ago. I'm gonna try and make it this year so I can visit my family and jam with the guys.

Reading the blog always,

Marty

Louise and David said...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BARBARA!

We hope your 29th birthday is fun ... especially for you, Barbara - and for Hannah-Lynn, Grace-Anne, Emmanuel and David as they celebrate with you today.

May the coming year bring with it good health and happy times for you and for those you love.

Cheers, best wishes and lots of love,
Louise and David

BJ said...

Hey Marty,
What a great idea. I hope you get to the jam and have fun with Vic and Don. Wish we could be there, too.

Lucy,
Of course, as soon as you mentioned the May deadline, I remembered. I should have put it on my calendar. How soon after the deadline, do you usually know the results?

Happy birthday, Barbara.

Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Marty ... no mights or maybes, hey. Set Thursday night aside now for a visit with your family and a jam session with the guys. The rest of us will be there with you in spirit.

BJ ... the winners of these quiz contests are notified by telephone on the day the draw is made. Anytime after that, the results are posted in the window of the charity shop that is running the contest. I will check at Save the Children on May 2nd.

Love, Lucy

Louise and David said...

Sonia ... this is just a quick "good luck" message for you and the boys as competition gets under way in Montreal today.

Louise and David said...

Good Morning!

Lucy likes bloggers, crosswords, pepper and puzzles.

She dislikes popups, clues, salt and solutions.

She loves committees!

What's her rationale?

kbub said...

I'm guessing Lucy adores Mississippi.

Louise and David said...

Oh yes, Kenneth!

Lucy likes grayling, marigolds, credit and bluebirds.

She dislikes trout, dandilions, cash and wrens.

She loves blackjack.

What's her rationale?

kbub said...

I'm pretty sure Lucy would be fond of seaquakes, stealth and compliments.

Louise and David said...

Oh my goodness, Kenneth, all those hues are hidden and appealing. Good eye!

Lucy likes scenes, beef, recess and jeeps.

She dislikes dramas, pork, study and trucks.

She loves settlements!

What's her rationale?

BJ said...

This is the first chance I've had to get on the blog today, but it wouldn't have helped if I had been on earlier. I haven't a clue Lucy and Kenneth are up to. Draw me a picture, please.

Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Just look for the patterns, BJ.

In my first set of "likes" were words with double letters. No wonder Kenneth thought I'd love Mississippi!

In the second set, I hid colours in the words: GRAYling, mariGOLDS, cREDit and BLUEbirds. Kenneth really showed creativity in knowing I would like seAQUAkes, sTEALth and compLIMEments.

The third set of words also has a pattern. Can you see it?

Love, Lucy

kbub said...

How would Lucy feel about feeblemindedness and the heebiejeebies?

Louise and David said...

The i's would not be very pleasing to her.

Louise and David said...

Lucy likes laughter, coffee, graphs and Chekov.

She dislikes seriousness, tea, diagrams and Ibsen.

She loves riffraff.

What's her rationale?

Louise and David said...

Lucy again...

If you haven't dropped in on Tricia's Tides today, take time to do so now. Tricia has two new postings with an important announcement in her latest entry.

Louise and David said...

We are getting extensive coverage of the World Snooker Championship matches right now and I am having to tear myself away from the action once in a while.

The first round of 16 matches ends today and the first of the next 8 matches has already begun. The champion will not be decided until a week, Sunday; so I have lots of snooker to enjoy between now and then.

Lucy

kbub said...

Man, I used to love watching snooker. The problem with the coverage in Canada was that it was taped and edited to fit into 1-hour blocks. So Dude A would be up 8-6 and you'd be wondering "can Dude B make the comeback?". But then you'd realize that there're only 4 minutes left in the hour, so obviously Dude A is going to take this game to win the match 9-6.

kbub said...

Oh, and does Lucy like the many different English spellings for the 'F' sound?

Louise and David said...

Right again, Kenneth!

BTW ... I never watched snooker until I came to Scotland. Matches in the second round of the World Championship are decided in 25 frames, played in time blocks of 8. I get to watch every single shot. I have learned so much about snooker by watching the best in the world compete against one another. They are so.o.o.o good!

Lucy

Louise and David said...

Yet again ...

Lucy likes abalone, telephones, scones and loners.

She dislikes oysters, television, cake and crowds.

She loves a lone trombone!

What's her rationale?

marty antonini said...

Hey Lucy

I don't have one clue.

Can you throw me a bone?

I've never been knone to get this stuff.

It must be my tone.

I need to hone my skills.

Ah, Leave me alone.

Out of the zone,

Marty

Louise and David said...

That's a funny ONE, Marty! You are not as far GONE as you think.

Lucy likes spigots, hyphens, scowls and flamboyance.

She dislikes taps, commas, grimaces and extravagance.

She loves sheepdogs!

What's her rationale?

b@bigdog said...

hmmm, interesting my latest comments have not made it to the blog... maybe the Regina library blocks blogging

oh well, couldn't have been that important I guess

hens eat oats and cows eat oats (pigs probably would too) and little lambs eat ivy and owls are another matter... i bet lucy also loves batmen

kbub said...

Great. Now I've got that tune stuck in my head.

Cowzy tweet and sowzy tweet and liddle sharksy doisters.

Louise and David said...

Thom ... You spotted all of Lucy's hidden creatures. Batmen would indeed fit right in with her list.

Kenneth ... I never knew that extra verse of "mares eat oats" until BJ recited it for me. Tonight it's stuck in my head, too.

BTW ...
Lucy likes prose, Easter, Irishmen and reincarnation.

She dislikes slang, Halloween, aliens and revivals.

She loves narcissism.

What's her rationale?

Louise and David said...

Sonia,
How are things going at the games in Montreal? Do you have any results to share with us yet? No matter what, I hope you and the boys are having a good time.
Louise

marty antonini said...

Hey

I betcha Lucy likes Lily because she has tulips. Lilacs the door everytime she sees nasturtiums.

Actually I never did like the smell of baby's breath.

Love,
Marty

b@bigdog said...

Woo hoo, I've created earworms...

sorry about that, you guys, but if it's any consolation, i've got it too

Louise and David said...

That's clever, Marty. The answers to "Lucy's Likes" have been fun than the questions. My blogatives are so creative!

When I did this week's cryptic crossword, I kept track of the clues that I was able to answer without reference to other words in the grid.

Here are 10 of those clues needing answers that are 7 letters long.

1. Made up as pirates, trudge off
2. It's obvious I've been ruined by the depression
3. Having wandered right in, didn't leave
4. Makes twice as much as the understudies
5. Declare time to be no genius
6. The girl flitting about weighs less
7. He wears uniform, but not in public
8. The stars dance around in, to music
9. Smoke - and that does annoy
10. Turn a child against healthy food

LOL, Lucy

3. STRAYED
4. DOUBLES

8. CAVORTS
9. INFLAME

Louise and David said...

The contests will keep, BJ! #3, 4 and 6 are correct and I like your answer to #9 as much as the one that actually fits into my crossword (incense).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BRANT!

Sunday with the family makes a birthday seem all the more special, doesn't it?

We hope that's the way it is for you today, celebrating your 35th birthday with Juliana, Kahless, Briana and Braden.

We raise a toast to you, Brant. May this California day be perfect in every way.

Cheers and lots of love,

Lucy here ...
I hope you snooker lovers get to see Ronnie O'Sullivan's maximum (147)frame to win his semi-final match today. I watched it live this afternoon. What a show that was!

The audience was on its feet and action stopped on the other table to congratulate O'Sullivan for scoring his ninth maximum ever in competition and for setting a new record. (Until now, O'Sullivan was tied with one other player at 8 maximums in competition.)

No small detail is the £147,000 prize that O'Sullivan wins for accomplishing this feat at the Crucible.

What a day this has been at the World Snooker Competition!

Louise and David said...

I find that I'm planning my day around live coverage of the World Snooker Competition. It starts with first matches at 10:00am, continues with second matches at 2:30pm and ends with third matches at 7:00pm. My favorite player is Ronnie O'Sullivan so his matches take priority for me.

This afternoon I have a tutoring session at 5:00 but I'll be back for the evening's events. David and I will be in Aberdeen all day Thursday so sports recaps will have to do when we get back that evening.

Is anyone out there in blogland following any of the snooker action from afar?

Luv, Lucy

BJ said...

Dear Lucy,

Unfortunately, we do not get these snooker matches live. We will probably be watching the tapes of them several months down the road. We do watch whatever we get, when we get it. Lucky you, to see them now.

Love, BJ

kbub said...

We don't get any snooker coverage at all (live or taped). The best we ever get is 9-ball.

I used to like Steve Davis a lot (I always liked strategic safe play). Then Stephen Hendry came along and it seemed like nobody else could win. I do remember being entertained by the way Ronnie O'Sullivan used to just burn through matches. Does he still play fast?

I also saw Cliff Thorburn give a demo/master class at a private party once in Ottawa. It's the only time I've ever seen anybody do a trick shot show on a snooker table.

Louise and David said...

Yes, BJ, I am lucky. That 147 maximum is still the most exciting frame I have ever watched.

Kenneth ... Steve Davis lost out in the first round this year and is now doing the commentary on subsequent matches.

Stephen Hendry is in the quarter finals leading Ryan Day 8 - 4 in the best out of 25 frames.

Yes, Ronnie O'Sullivan still loves to move quickly around the table and even set a new record for the fastest century in World Competition. He is awesome to watch.

Now, excuse me, I have to go back and watch more snooker.

Lucy

Louise and David said...

Well, it's a good thing I went back to the tables. I was there to see a young player named Ali Carter score the second 147 maximum at the 2008 World Championship. Sweet!

This is the first time in tournament history that two 147's have been scored in the same year. With four more days of top drawer play, there could be more.

The only down side for O'Sullivan is that he has to split the £157,000 prize with Carter.

BTW, Kenneth ... Stephen Hendry left the Crucible with an impressive 11-5 lead in his best of 25 games match.

Action starts again at 10:00 am tomorrow.

Hi Lucy,
Thanks for the cute verse for Jacob. I've printed it out and will give it to him the next time I see him. We celebrated his birthday on Sunday, although he was quick to tell me that it wasn't his "actual" birthday that day.
Happy Birthday also to Christopher & Keenan. All these Spring birthdays!!
I think Spring may actually have arrived in Alberta, although we still have traces of snow. But, the sky is blue, the temperature is warm, the robins are singing, and there are even tiny buds on some of our trees!

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
Spring is when you feel like whistling, even with a shoe full of slush!

Oh my goodness..we do have a lot of spring birthdays! Happy birthday to everyone this day and this month, and thank you for the birthday wishes too!

BJ said...

Lucy,
Another great birthday verse!

Mary Ellen,
I love your spring quote. We had winter, one day of spring, summer and then, believe it or not, it snowed today. Just flurries, snow grains or mixed precipitation (take your pick), but definitely snow. it is also quite cold and windy. Must be Canada.

Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Mary-Ellen ... thanks for making sure that Jacob sees his birthday verse. I'm glad you shared a Sunday party with him. At just 4 years of age, he is very clever to realize that he still had the "actual" birthday to celebrate on April 30th. I am also pleased to hear that spring is trying to make its appearance in Alberta. Your quote of the day is perfect!

Barb ... you are so right about April's many birthdays - 14 in all! Even in our large family, that's a lot in a single month of the year.

BJ ... thanks! BTW, spring is a hit-and-miss affair here in St. Andrews, too. Now that May is here we are hoping for more "hits" than "misses" (and dry feet, for a change).

Kenneth ... world snooker continues and Stephen Hendry is up against Ronnie O'Sullivan in a semi-final match of 33 frames. This is exciting stuff!

We and I are off to Aberdeen this morning. This should be Dave's last visit to the laser eye clinic. He has 20/20 vision now and expects to be given a clean bill of health.

Love, Lucy
