HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!

I was going to wait until you had finished your latest puzzle so you wouldn't have to jump from thread to thread, but I might have missed Canada Day.

I think we all agree we had an emotion filled June. Our hope and prayers for July is a continuation of good news all around.

Ed ... Quiz or no quiz, we were waiting for your timely red-letter post on Canada Day. Cheers!

Kenneth ... yours is a 1st class July First first entry on Ed's latest post. Enough said!

BJ ... the personal greetings from our nation's capital on Canada Day were happily received.

ME ... your final entry on the June strand makes us feel so proud to be Canadian. Thank you for quoting Time Magazine's tribute to Canada and for closing June's chapter of the blog with such enthusiasm.

Yeh, Canada!

Louise and David said...

BJ ... I'm sorry that I didn't get back to you on your meanderings about myopic Nicola and Mille Feuille.

You inspired me to look more closely at both clues. I think the "coke bottles" is less obvious than "cola" and more creative. For #27, I suddenly got "crunchie" ie: 100 (Roman numeral C) flee (run) before their shortened leader (chief shortened to chie).

Sonia's "marshmallows" and your "watermelons" both fit #16. The marsh is more a wet garden, though, and mallows are definitely plants.

So far, no lights are coming on for the last four. We WILL solve them, though, right?
LOL, Lucy

BJ said...

Lucy,
The Crunchie is genius,as are the marshmallows. (And I have hundreds of mallow just outside my back window. How did I miss that one?) I didn't realize Sonia had already solved that one when I posted the watermelon. Her answer is definitely the correct one. Delete watermelon!
Could 17 have something to do with licorice pipes? The pipe is obvious, but what about ornamental? Put your thinking feathers on and see if you can come up with something. I'll look at the last three again sometime today.
Love, BJ

BJ said...

11. Runts (Wonka runts)

Louise and David said...

Oh, that's good, BJ ... RUNTS it is for #11.

27 down and 3 to go!

Lucy

BJ said...

9. Charms

BJ said...

10. BB Bats??

Louise and David said...

BJ ... I like the "BB Bats" but I'm not so sure about the "charms". What is your thinking on that answer?

BTW ... do you have any idea what ornamental feathers might be?

Lucy

BJ said...

Lucy,
I was thinking of charm as being the scheme that one might use to talk another into getting married (hitched).
Ornamental feathers: Indian headress? Boas? Peacock feathers?

Louise and David said...

Okay, BJ, ... "charms" will do for scheming to get you hitched. I was playing around with "matrimonial bars" on that one. I was also wondering if there might be a confection called "Matchmaker".

Let's also go with the licorice pipes on #17 and call this quiz as complete as we will ever get it.

Love, Lucy

BJ said...

Lucy,
Sounds good to me. I think most of the answers we got were really great. And the iffy ones will do for an ending.
Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

I agree, BJ. The really clever ones made the whole thing a lot of fun. BTW...for me, PASTILLE was particularly "sweet".

Lucy

BJ said...

I liked crunchie and marshmallow. BJ

Sonia said...

my favourite was Smarties....

Louise and David said...

Yes, that was a clever note for the quiz to end on, Sonia. In fact, Dave says, "I liked the smarties, too."

We see that the two Amy's in our family have back-to-back birthdays on the 4th and 5th of July.

Yours comes first, though! We hope you and Cory are able to make this, your 30th birthday, a July 4th special in the big TO.

We raise a toast to your health and happiness, Amy. Since PEARL is the gem of the day for any thirtieth celebration, may this birthday be a "pearl of a day" for you, in every way. Cheers!

Happy 20th Birthday, Amy Antonini!

You are the second Amy in two days to celebrate a birthday. That shouldn't really surprise us in a family of well over 100 members.

But today is all yours, Amy!

Any twentieth celebration may be honored by fine china, so that's what we will use to toast you on this, your 20th birthday.

May your entire day have the beauty, quality and ring of fine china to it, suiting YOU perfectly.

Cheers, best wishes and lots of love,
Louise and David

Louise and David said...

Happy Birthday, Marie!

What more can we wish you than a happy Sunday birthday at home with your family?

And how can this particular July 6th be anything but special for you, Lui, Tricia, Brandon, Dana, Jack and Davis, and even Daisy? Have a good one!

Here in St. Andrews we will raise a warm toast to your own good health, Marie, and to the fragile gift that is LIFE itself .... just for today. Cheers!

Lots of love and best wishes,
Louise and David

Louise and David said...

BJ ... My friend, Margaret, tells me that MATCHMAKERS are delicious sticks of chocolate in mint, orange flavors. She even offered to get me some so I could try them for myself. Go Figure!
Lucy

Louise and David said...

Okay ... these clues, dreamed up by the Coeliac UK North East Fife Group in 2005, are modes of transport.

eg: An area of London = Hackney

1. A quiet sheep.
2. By all accounts it is stubborn.
3. Part of the Nordic aristocracy.
4. Is this below the nautical soldier?
5. A hill follows a rescue organization and a junction.
6. It sounds as if you leave the debt in this table.
7. Was the hotel price rigged?
8. One drew up in Adlestrop in late June.
9. Is it fringed in this county?
10. Is this an attempt to ride?
11. A small glass of beer, £25!
12. Sounds as though he beat and cured 'em.
13. Nothing is engulfed by a rod here.
14. Little Richard sounds certain.
15. A silk yarn used for the weft.
16. This Scottish contest includes gym.
17. A bird pursues water vapour.
18. A lame Cuban gets healed.
19. A point precedes the shelf.
20. An ingredient of chutney, ketchup and pickles.
21. Peter, Paul and Mary left this way in 1970.
22. The sea duck swallows a duck.
23. Gold after earth in this transport.
24. A Scottish jackdaw is chased by an ox in this palindrome.
25. I leave the trains before the railway official.
26. Large edible rays.
27. A dense mass of floating ducks.
28. Loan Hobart oil is transformed.
29. Animal, aeorplane or colour.
30. Art rather than fly in this insect!

Remember, we have no other source of answers than our own clever minds.

4. submarine
6. chariot
10. tricycle
21. train

BJ said...

23. landau
26. skates

Louise and David said...

Hi, BJ,
I see you have been busy. For me it is obvious that your answers to #2,4,9,10,14,23,24,26 and 28 are correct.

I was thinking "jet plane" for 21 and I'd like you to explain "chariot" for #6.

I'm pretty sure that #3 is CAR (last letter of Nordic and first two of aristocracy).

That gives us a solid 10 down and 20 to go.

Lucy

BJ said...

I also wondered if car could be #3, but it seemed too simple. It's probably correct.

#6. char-IO-T. Chart is a kind of table or graph and io could be translated as "I owe"

25. Transporter. Leave the 'i' out of trains and add the porter.

BJ said...

7. ice-digger
17. steam crane (crane operated by steam engine)
30. caterpillAR Tractor

marty antonini said...

Could # 1 be

Shh-ewe = shoe

BJ said...

Holy cow, Marty,
That's brilliant!

Louise and David said...

I agree, Marty, SHOE is #1

BJ, you are getting some very clever answers, too. I see the CHARIOT now for sure.

Okay the count is 16 down, 14 to go. We're more than half-way through this transport quiz.

Lucy

Louise and David said...

Happy Birthday, Christine

We hope you are able to enjoy your July 7th birthday with Presley and James and with your "baby-in-waiting".

We wish you a relaxing summer's day today. Here's to you, Christine and to your happy, healthy, growing family. Cheers!

Best wishes and lots of love,
Louise and David

Louise and David said...

Believe it or not ... this afternoon my friend, Margaret, brought me a box of Nestle's Matchmakers. They are long thin sticks of chocolate with a mint filling. Margaret says that originally they were even packaged in boxes that were similar to the Eddy's matchboxes of old.

These sweets are definitely the right(and delicious)answer to the old #9 clue "They scheme to get you hitched".

Lucy

BJ said...

Lucy,
Matchmakers sound like our After Eight mints. Matchmakers is definitely the right answer.
How about schooner for #11? A LARGE beer glass is called a schooner, but maybe the 25-pound cost at the end is the clue that makes the small glass a schooner.
For # 19. Sledge. Ledge is the shelf and S could be the South point of a weather vane or compass.
BJ

Louise and David said...

Those are two more good answers, BJ.

That's 18 down and 12 to go. There's already another quiz waiting in the wings.

Lucy

BJ said...

8. Express-train.
From a poem by Edward Thomas:
"Yes, I remember Adlestrop-
The name, because one afternoon
Of heat the express-train drew up there
Unwontedly, it was late June."
13. Canoe. Cane is a type of rod and nothing is a zero. can0e.

BJ

BJ said...

Could # 15 be a parachute? They used to be made of silk. Or a sulky drawn by a jockey whose colors are known as silks.
20. Oil tanker. Cooking oil is an ingredient used in all of these condiments.
BJ

Louise and David said...

Nice work, BJ!
The express train is a particularly interesting answer. I like parachute for # 15.

I'm answering #18 with AMBULANCE.

By my reckoning, that leaves just #5,12,16,22,27 and 29. 24 down and 6 to go ... Yahoo!

Louise and David said...

Here's another reflection from Mom's Elf-help book on Grief Therapy (with special thanks to Vic who is a wonderful listener, even at a long distance):

#13: "Be with those who are also grieving. As you tell your stories, you will share an understanding of the heart that is deeper than words."

Lucy

BJ said...

Lucy,
29. Camel. It is an animal, a color and the Sopwith Camel was the most successful fighter plane of WWI.
Could 27 be a life raft? A raft is a large number, and ducks are a live mass.
22. Glider, perhaps. A gull could be considered a tern and an eider is a duck. I know, it is a big stretch, and who is swallowing whom, but I have just about run out of answers.

One last desperate attempt ...5. elevator.
The EL or Elevated Railroad could be the junction, VA could be Veterans' Affairs (rescue organization) and a tor is a hill.

In the meantime, Calgary folks, Lorraine and I have a five-hour layover in your fine city on Monday July 21. Sounds like enough time for lunch. Anybody available????

Louise and David said...

I like all three of your answers, BJ; and I like it even better that we have just three more to go.

Lucy

Louise and David said...

Thom,
David and I are going to be in Calgary visiting Alan and Melissa that entire week in July. We will even have our own transportation. Maybe we could see you and Lorraine during your Calgary stopover, too? Keep us posted please.

How about moving on to #12 and #16?

Hurry up and get here! I'm really looking forward to spending lots of time with you.

BJ,

Okay Thomas

The only thing bigger that the Calgary Stampede is the Calgary airport. So, yer gonna have to lemme know the flight yer coming in on so I can find ya.

I talked to Mary Ellen already
and she just left to get groceries to accomodate our appetites. We'll meet and eat at her mansion. (She may slap me for that mansion remark). I can assume Louise and Crew will meet us there.

You only have a five hour stop over so we should be able to visit for at least 7 or 8 minutes.

BJ, if you or anyone else is coming, you'll have to let me know so I can let ME know how many to set the table for.

See you then,
Marty

Here's the details:

Air Canada Jazz: AC208

(from Vancouver)

Arriving: 12:34 PM (local time)

Departing: AC278 at 5:30 PM (also local time)

I'll be wearing a Saskatchewan Roughriders baseball cap (duh) and an ADESA Calgary black windbraker (thanks Lou) ... I don't know what Lorraine will be wearing, but she'll be with me

Looking forward to High Tea at The ME & Bob Mansion

Louise and David said...

Ken and BJ,
I see that you have made a good start on our latest quiz. That's 8 down and 22 to go.

So far all of the answers have been clever ones in the way that they relate to the clues. I especially like MICROWAVE for a "very small breaker" and ROLLING PIN for a "tumbling fastener".

And no, BJ, CUPS is not too simple for 28. I'll look forward to checking for more answers later. I will even try to enter one or two myself, if possible.

LOL, Lucy

Nice work, BJ
Griddle is terrific for #2 and all the others fit as well. Thanks for taking time to explain #6, 27 and 29. That last one was tough!

I'm entering:
15. CHILDREN AT COOKING
25. UTENSIL (a vessel with the letters from nuts in it)

My count is now 21 down and 9 to go.
#1,4,7,13,14,16,17,19, and 26 still need answers.

Lucy

Louise and David said...

Yes, BJ, I think the drinking chocolate fits the quiz better than children at cooking. There were just too many letters in that anagram.

Hi Lucy,
Bon voyage for your Canadian trip. Don't forget that Marty's closing date for the football contest is July 20. His format:
Pick the 2 teams in the "Western Final" and the 2 teams in the "Eastern Final."
You get 5 points for any team you get correct. (all 4 teams correct = 20 points).
Pick the 2 teams that will play in The Grey Cup. 10 points for each team correct.
All entrants must post a final score for the Grey Cup Game. Example: East 17 West 24.
I look forward to hearing about your trip from family members you visit as you travel across BC, AB and SK.
And I'll watch for your new contest in the fall.
Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Well, thank you BJ!
That's quite a send off.

I will use Al and Mel's computer in Calgary to make my entry into Marty's football contest. Perhaps I can use some of my time in the air to make the winning choices. The truth is that I would probably do just as well by pulling names and scores out of a hat.

David and I do intend to have a wonderful time in Canada. You can expect a postcard or two from our travels.

Yesterday we went to the Calgary Zoo with Melissa and Bjorn. There were lots of interesting moments but the most captivating ones were at the gorilla compound. There, a new mother gorilla was playing with her 2 month old baby in the straw. They were just on the other side of the glass from us. The father was close by keeping watch.

kbub said...

Awwwwwwwww, Maaaartteeeeeeeee.

I didn't forget to submit my picks, but I did forget that it's no longer 1994. Won't you let me change my picks to teams that didn't fold 15 years ago?

(Extra blog points to the first person expressing disbelief that 1994 was almost 15 years ago).

Sonia said...

What??? 1994 is that long ago?? I graduated in 1989....that makes me creeping up my 20 year School Reunion!!! wow..... i am in disbelief.

wait a minute. i can't get extra points anyways....cause i forgooooootttt the deadline..... whaaaaaaa whaaaaaaa, pass the gouda...

marty antonini said...

Alright...alright...

Since we've only had 7 entries,(8 including Kenneth's long shot), I will extend the deadline to July 31as long as it is okay with the original 7.

So...BJ, ME, Bob Barker, Ed, Holly, Louise, and Dave... unless any of you object, the contest is extended until July 31, BUT the original 7 will have advantage if there is a tie situation with a late entrant.

Well... let's see if this will really make a big difference.
My guess...maybe 3 or 4 more.
Tee hee.

Love,
MSA

marty antonini said...

Oh...and by the way...the original 7 can change their predictions at any time before the deadline with no penalty.

...I hope you guys are okay with this.

BJ said...

Marty,
Yes, yes, by all means, let the whiners in. Being a whiner myself last year I can kind of relate. The more, the merrier. And I think I will stick with my original prediction.
Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Hi Marty,
Mary Ellen and I are both happy to have the deadline extended for late comers. At this time neither one of us wants to change her original predictions.

I can probably speak for David, too. As BJ says, the more the merrier!

And, yes, Sonia ... we CAN hear the whine in your comment.

LOL, Lucy

Bob you are a gentleman and a scholar.

Met Lorraine the other day. Very nice girl. We had a bunch of people over at Mary Ellen's for lunch Monday: Louise and Dave, Alan and Melissa, Thomas and Lorraine and Lou and...get ready...Tricia and just as we were leaving to go back to the airport, a whole bus load of Mary Ellen and Bob's family showed up. They were so big I didn't recognize half of them. It was fun, fun, fun.

Greetings fellow Bloglings (is that one in the blexicon?)

Some of us did not forget the deadline, we were just not plugged in for the last couple of weeks. I know, hard to believe I'm not blogging and facebooking from a CrackBerry yet, but I'm becoming more Luddite with each passing techno-innovation.

On to Football, have I said it yet?

I SMELL GREY (dare I say? Dynasty)

I may be tempting fate, but I just can't go against the Riders (never have, never will even for the promise of an MSA original).

West final: Calgary v. Green (that's right, the western final in Regina, I'll be there in my seat, Section 12, Seat 7)

East Final: Montreal (duh) v. The Big Smoke (Kerry still has some magic in that Green Top Hat he found) and it will be especially sweet when our new #4 beats his now Blue ass in:

The Grey Cup: Sask 34 Toronto 31

BTW, KBub, thanks for reminding me how old I am... I want to express shock and disbelief that 1994 was almost 15 years ago, but it just doesn't surprise me in the least... sigh

b@bigdog said...

We had a lovely visit with everyone in Calgary. The traffic gods even smiled on us and it was smooth sailing on the Deerfoot both to and from ME's castle (it's TRUE, ask Marty). Lorraine can't believe there are so many nice people in one family. It was a whirlwind, but a heckuva great way to kill a 5-hour layover.

It was especially nice to see Trish. Virtual hugs to you, Trish, hopefully we'll be able to share the real thing again soon.

b@bigdog said...

Lorraine and I would like to extend an invitation to everyone to ditch the city on Saturday Aug 2 (the long weekend) and join us for some fun on the Lake.

We will, of course, have the Roughies v. Stamps on the TVs, the BBQ fired up and plenty of space for all y'all to camp in or camp out.

I'll be giving everyone a call over the next couple of days since you never know who's blurking or not, but if you do read this consider yourself invited.

Good to see you back on the Blog, Thomas. And to my surprise, 'bloglings' was not in the Blexicon. It has now been added.

Tonight David and I are in BC with Paul after spending a great week in Calgary. The summer weather already promises to continue here in Westbank.

Tomorrow, Paul and Dave have an early afternoon tee time at Summerland Golf Course. I think I may stay and watch the Canadian Open in the cool of Paul's air-conditioned home. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Lucy

BJ said...

Hi Lucy and David,
Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan. You will have done quite a bit of traveling by the time you leave Canada.
Hey everybody else,
What are you doing this summer? Anyone else on the road, or are most of you staying home?
We are not going anywhere this summer. Last summer we went west and next summer we are going east.
There is so much of Canada to see and not enough time to do it all.
Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Well, yesterday afternoon I ended up walking the Summerland Golf Course while Paul and David played a round together. The hill top setting is spectacular as it runs alongside a deep valley gorge. The walk just about did me in but it was well worth the effort.

Today the guys are golfing again but I am at home watching the PGA and LPGA action. I am also catching up on a bit of correspondence as we begin our second week in Canada.

The weather here is too hot. I can't believe I am saying that but...there it is!

LOL, Lucy

kbub said...

Hey Lucy. Glad to hear you're enjoying your vacation and finding time to check your blogs.

(Not trying to engage in one-upmanship, but we did nearly hit 40°C here today. So "hot" I understand.)

Johanne and I begin our vacation Thursday. We'll stay one night in Ottawa before driving up to Trois-Rivières to spend a few days with Johanne's family. Then back to Ottawa for a week. Can't wait!

Louise and David said...

Thanks Kenneth,
I feel cooler already!

I hope you and Johanne will have as wonderful a vacation in eastern Canada as David and I are already having in the west.

Thanks for giving us the overall picture of football predictions, Marty. Maybe your summary will encourage those who would still like to enter the MSA contest. We have until July 31st, right?

Our BC visit is going well. The weather is still too hot for my liking but air-conditioning provides a good escape.

BJ said...

Oh oh, Marty,
A quarterback out with 3 fractured ribs and another player down with a broken leg. I am not feeling quite so optimistic, but I am still not changing my prediction. Once people start getting hurt, though, I kind of lose interest in a sport.
Lucy, it is really hot here, too and muggy to boot. Let's both hope it cools off a bit.
BJ

marty antonini said...

Like I said... Shreveport may have a chance. Look at their record... No injuries or losses yet.

b@bigdog said...

I can't believe nobody took
the opportunity to say, yes, Kbub, but it's a dry heat... hahahahahaha

BJ, on the bright side, we get our first string QB back this week and even our third string guy knows how to win a game (although I'm chalking up Sunday's win to the 13th man, even after weathering a hail storm, the vast majority of us returned to our seats and made it impossible for Joseph to hear himself think).

Very classy the ovation Joseph got when he came on the field, though.

Supposed to be warm here this weekend too. Great for coming on out to the lake for a barbeque and water fun. Details and directions in my next post.

Happy birthday, Lucy.

Here is a birthday puzzle for you. Each clue represents a letter of the alphabet. When you have solved all of them, unscramble the letters to discover what is special about today.

1. You are the one we celebrate today.
2. Why don't you take a ride on the elevated train?
3. Get an eyeful of the scenery!
4. Hang on as you go around a couple of curves.
5. Eek! That was scary.
6. My, oh my, why did you ever agree to get on this machine?!

Have a happy and fun-filled day.

Love, BJ

Your timely and thoughtful postings on Tricia's blog are very much appreciated and helpful in her current battle.

The ability for us to communicate in this manner has brought what I thought was a closely knit family to a level of support for one another that our parents could not have imagined in their wildest dreams.

You have been such an important part of what has become a daily ritual for most of us, even if just to check for messages and laughter in the entries made by others.

I hope you have a wonderful day, you continually make them for others and you deserve one!!

Hi Again, Louise,

I found more of Dr. Suess' lines from his Happy Birthday to You book. They are so good, I just have to add them.

MORE QUOTE OF THE DAY:
If you'd never been born, well what would you be?
You might be a fish! Or a toad in a tree!
You might be a door knob! Or three baked potatoes!
You might be a bag full of hard green tomatoes!
Or worse than all that.....why you might be a WASN'T!

A Wasn't has no fun at all. No, he doesn't.
A Wasn't just isn't. He just isn't present.
But you..... you are YOU! And now, isn't that pleasant?

- Dr. Suess

It's very pleasant!!

Happy Birthday once again,
