Happy Birthday,
Sweet Sixteen, Christine!

A birthday's always special
And today that's true, Christine.
May your candles burn more brightly
On this day you turn 16!

There has always been a sweetness
In the things you say and do,
And your kindness, grace and beauty
Have grown along with you.

May your happiness continue;
May you keep your winning smile;
May the people you love dearly
Help you celebrate in style.

Lots of love,
Louise and David

Well, BJ, today we got the results of the Waters of the World Quiz. We answered 34 of 38 correctly (89%). That's not bad, eh?

Here are the four clues we missed:

7. "Bark!" a maid ordered. KARIBA DAM (anagram). We said VIRGIN BAY.

20. It's a coin or nothing! ORINOCO (anagram). We said BOLIVIA

32. Mere loss of red fluid. LAKE BLED. We said PALE LAKE

37. A stately bird made it back without direction. ASWAN DAM. We said EAGLE BAY.

Once again, our responses were suitable ones; we just didn't guess what was in the mind of the quiz setter.

I will be in Canada by the time the Christmas Quiz draws are made. Margaret has agreed to be our contact person if we should come out winners in either of those competitions.

Wow! Lake Bled. That's where I proposed to Johanne. We went down to the water's edge at sunset and sat on a bench looking across to the island castle. With swans as witnesses, I brought out The Ring and she said "Yes!".

What a great memory. Thanks, Louise!

Louise and David said...

That's a terrific story, Kenneth. It's just too bad that it took a wrong answer to evoke such a great memory.

What were you doing in Slovenia?

Louise

kbub said...

We were at a conference in Slovenia, summer of 1999 ("The Sixteenth International Conference on Machine Learning").

I guess that means next summer will be the tenth anniversary of our engagement. Time flies.

Louise and David said...

Wow, Kenneth, you really were in Slovenia! (I thought maybe Texas had a Lake Bled, too.) The subject of the conference is unfamiliar to me. You sure went a long, long way to attend that one, though.

Yep, time flies, alright. I have been retired for 7 years now and I still dream about tomorrow's lessons.

Last night we geared up for a snowstorm that was supposed to hit us hard this morning. It's noon now and all we have had is a bit of rain. I'm not complaining but I am a little disappointed to be looking out at a grey world instead of a winter wonderland.

Lucy

Louise and David said...

Still no snow but the rain is wicked today. Maybe Mother Nature is telling us that it's okay to leave Scotland for Canada in winter time.

Happy Birthday, Deanie!

We hope you have a special Sunday birthday celebration surrounded by your wonderful family.

As you know, this is also David's birthday. We will be "flying high" throughout the day. One hour from now, we will take a train to Edinburgh, connect with British Airways to London and board a direct flight to Vancouver.

As we celebrate up in the air, we will raise a special toast to you, Deanie. May your December 7th birthday be filled with a generous return of the loving attention you give to others every day of the year.

Cheers and lots of love,
Louise and David

Happy Birthday to you, too, David. I will make sure of that!

For Mom's birthday, I wanted to make brunch for her, since she makes brunch for us every Sunday after mass. However, with Jamie out of town (he is the brunch-maker in the family... as well as the breakfast-, lunch-, and supper-maker...) and me at home with 4 kids, she generously offered to host her own birthday party! We had chocolate chip pancakes, scrambled eggs, and bacon, plus one birthday cupcake for her! Then we invited her to a Feast of St Nicholas Party at the church where Eddie and Mia performed a song with their Catholic KidsNet group. There were many surprises for Nina and the kids: for Nina, that Eddie got to play the part of Joseph, and for the kids, that St Nicholas himself made an appearance to hand out bags of chocolate coins (Eddie figured it wasn't the REAL St Nicholas, since his bishop's staff was made of plastic...). Then she was off to Lumsden to have potato pancakes with her dad and siblings (so someone will cook for her after all)! All in all, I think she will say that it was a full and fun day!

Hey BJ

Thanks for the wonderful greeting at Mary Ellen's door. She greeted everyone from BJ as they came in the door.
We enjoyed an absolute grand Christmas dinner. It was just like the good ol' days.

Thanks Mary Ellen and Bob,

Love,
Martin and Karen

BJ said...

Dear Martin and Karen,
Thanks for the message. I was just waiting till it was late enough this morning to phone Mary Ellen to see how the party went. You lucky things. Wish I could have been there. Hearing that you had a great time is "the next best thing to being there", I guess.

Well, we have arrived safely in Canada. Our flight from London seemed quick and easy. We are in Vancouver for the day while we renew our Canadian passports.

It sounds like that family gathering in Calgary was one not to be missed. I'm glad it was such a hit for all concerned.

Now we have moved on to Westbank where we are waiting for Paul to return from an overnight delivery to Prince George.

In the meantime, we are cat-sitting Paul's pets, Peterbilt and Porsha. They are watching us with suspicion as we take over their territory.

Dear Lucy and David,

Welcome to Canada. I hope you have been greeted by better weather than we are having. It is quite cold here and it has been snowing all day.
In honor of your arrival I have set my GOOGLE heading at Scotland landscapes. They are beautiful and change several times during the day.

Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Thanks for the welcome, BJ!

Apart from a 30 minute snowstorm at the top of the Coquihalla, we had an easy drive through the mountains to Westbank last night.

Today the weather is cool and dry and there is no sign of snow at ground level. We are very happy with conditions so far.

I don't understand about "setting the GOOGLE heading" but the beauty of the Scottish landscape is very familiar to us. I'm glad that you are enjoying the scenes in honor of our arrival.

Speaking of arrivals....your December Bugle was here waiting for us in Westbank. You think of everything! Thank you.

Slow blog. Talk about the weather.

We're having some strange weather here. The high yesterday afternoon was 27°C; this morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. The guy on the radio said that since the snow started before midnight, it's the first time ever in Austin that we set a record high temperature and had snow on the same day.

BJ said...

Ottawa: COLD. Knee-deep snow. Bus Strike starting tomorrow. University and high-school students stranded in the middle of exams. Not a pretty scene.

P.S. I prefer the Texas scene. BJ

Happy Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe! Grandma knew that we love to celebrate this feast day in our family, so she always wished me a happy feast day and gave me little prayer cards and tokens she had of Our Lady of Guadaplupe. So we're thinking of her today as we celebrate!

That's a nice thought, Holly. I always like it when something special makes me think of Mom. Thanks!

Hi to all from Calgary!

Yesterday we drove through the mountains from Westbank to Calgary. As it turns out, Paul was on the same stretch of road in his big rig.

We have already seen Alan, Melissa and Bjorn. Sunday is Alan's 30th birthday.

So far, we are enjoying Canada in winter. The temperatures are supposed to drop tonight though. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Great Party, Bonnie, Rob, Jessica and Nicholas!

We had such a good time with family at the family's December 14th pre-Christmas gathering. Thanks for opening your home to us for the special occasion.

The day was a combination of great company, terrific conversations, wonderful refreshments and loving family reconnections all around.

It was especially good to see Aunt Jo and Auntie Barbara in our midst; and Corson's presence at 1 month of age was sweet.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!!

Lots of love, Louise and David

From ALL accounts, the party at Bonnie and Robert's was a huge success. We were very happy to have been invited--just wish we could have been there to share the spirit of the season with everyone.

Hi Everyone,
You may be relieved to hear that David and I are safe and settled in Westbank today. If you have been listening to cross-Canada weather reports you are bound to be concerned about those of us who are travelling by road at this time of year. You can put your minds at ease about us.

Is anyone tracking Vic and Don's east-bound progress across Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario?

Lots of love, Lucy

Holy smokes. Did they go by land?

Louise and David said...

Yes, Kenneth, they did. They left Saskatoon on the 17th and expect to be in Ottawa on the 21st or 22nd with stops along the way, of course.

BTW...Don has a wonderful new truck with all the bells and whistles needed for such an adventure. He and Vic are very used to winter driving but advance weather reports say that winter is gearing up to deliver "snowmaggedon" in Ontario.

Hi Louise,
Thanks for letting us know you made it safely to Westbank. Bob & I have been thinking of you and hoping the driving through the mountains wasn't too bad. Calgary continues to get lots of winter weather and we are definitely going to be having a "White Christmas". Thanks for stopping over for a visit with us. It was wonderful to get the chance to see you.

Hey everybody,
Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy the whole season!

Love,
ME xoxoxo

BJ said...

Two down, two to go. Thank goodness David and Lucy made it through the mountains. Now, we are anxiously awaiting Don and Vic's arrival. They should be arriving on Manitoulin Island late today. They will stay there tomorrow to visit Don's brother Elwood and his wife, Marilyn. Then on to Ottawa on the 21st which is the day we are expecting the huge snowstorm. We will be very glad to see them. Only in Canada do people drive such long distances in the WINTER!

Louise and David said...

Happy Birthday, Bob!

Our greetings come just a few days after our wonderful visit with you and Mary Ellen in your Calgary home. In a way, that December 16/17 stay-over was an advance celebration of two birthdays and Christmas all rolled into one. Thank you for that!

Have an relaxing day, Bob - one that celebrates YOU ... and the special person that you are in the lives of your family and friends.

Cheers, best wishes and lots of love,
Louise and David

While we were in Calgary, Marty presented us with our prizes from this year's football pool.

David received a medium-sized miniature painting of what could be a Vancouver Island ocean cove. In the upper right quadrant, there is a small cabin with a boardwalk nestled against a forest background. On the left, a sailboat named DAVID B is just leaving the tranquil cove.

My smaller painting is entitled, "Somewhere in the Rockies" and it features a sharp-peaked mountain in winter against a grey/blue sky tinged with pink. There are 3 snow-laden fir trees in the foreground and the foot of the mountain is surrounded by a distant forest of firs.

When I get back to St. Andrews, I will download my digital pictures and post them on Facebook. I have a close-up of each painting as well as some presentation pictures of David and me receiving our prizes from the artist himself.

Thanks, Marty, for sharing yourself and your artistry in such "original" and compact ways. We already treasure our MSA miniatures and will follow up on your suggestions for framing them with flair.

Lots of love,
Louise and David

Ooops, Dave says that the DAVID B is a fishing boat not a sailboat. Sorry!

I've been recording a bunch of Christmas movies on tv. Johanne and I were watching one last night and I made her jump out of her chair by screaming: "Holy crap that's my uncle!"

Christmas in Wonderland (actually, the West Edmonton Mall). I've seen Marty on tv here before, but this is the first time that I didn't know beforehand that he was in what I was watching.

His scenes were full of one-on-one dialog with Tim Curry, too! Pretty cool.

marty antonini said...

Hey Kenneth

I didn't even know That movie was out yet. Tim Curry is one of the nicest, most genuine stars I have ever worked with.

Is the weather as balmy down there as it is up here? 4o friggin below for a week already.

Had a great visit with my kin, ME and Bob and Lucy and Dave. I miss "The Family".

Been Gigging my butt off this month playing Christmas parties.

Merry Christmas to all in our Blogland.

Hi Vic and BJ,
Margaret sent an email in which she mentions that she answered "butcher" for the occupation in #4 "Frank was one but Pat is still one."

Frank and Pat Butcher are characters from the long-running British soap, Eastenders. Years ago, they married and operated the Queen Vic pub on the show. Frank disappeared and later died but Pat is still on the show running the Vic. However, she has had a string of relationships and maybe even a new husband. I don't know whether her last name is Butcher anymore. What do you think?

Lucy
PS: The previous deletion was mine. I had the whole story all mixed up. Is there any wonder? lol

BJ said...

Lucy,
Butcher is definitely the answer! We North Americans would not have got the British answer. Our reasoning was Frank Sinatra was a crooner and Pat Boone is still one. We thought crooner was kind of weak, as it isn't really an occupation, but we couldn't think of anything else.
Vic & Don have gone on to Kingston to visit with Michele and Brian, and will leave from there on January 2 to return home. We had a lovely visit and will miss them for a while to come.
Love, BJ
