Happy Anniversary, Marcia and Dennis!

You are probably back at home in Victoria on this special day in April.

Your return to Vancouver Island coincides with Spring's arrival, too. That's perfect planning on your part! This can be the nicest time of year in the City of Gardens.

We hope your anniversary celebrations are as bright, happy and full of promise as springtime itself. Cheers to you today and always!

Lots of love,
Louise and David

Happy Birthday, Nathan!

The comedian, Jack Benny, stopped counting his birthdays at the age of 39. Apparently, he considered it a "funny number" because he always got a laugh whenever he said that he was 39.

We hope your "real" 39th birthday is good for fun and laughter, too, Nathan. Here in St. Andrews, we will certainly enjoy our celebratory toast in your honour.

Have a great day!

Love and best wishes,
Louise and David

All of the action is over on Facebook, BJ. In particular, check out Lindsey's March 28th Engagement Party Album.

Besides seeing Lindsey, Patrick and many of their friends, I spotted the familiar faces of Diane, Michael, Shannon and Luke; Karen and Marty; Mary Ellen, Bob and Barbara; and Lui and Tricia.

Nice pics of a night to remember, Lindsey!

Love, Louise

BJ said...

Hi Lucy,
I have seen the pictures of Lindsey's party. Bob always shows me any family pics that appear on face book. But I still like to see people on the blog.

Louise and David said...

I know what you mean, BJ. So do I.

BTW . . . David thinks the answer to clue #16 might be CURRANT. Can you see the connection?

Lucy

BJ said...

Yes, Lucy, I see the connection. The time is current; current time. And I think it is our best answer yet. Did Margaret have an answer?

BJ

Louise and David said...

Yes, BJ
Margaret said she quickly entered "parsley" as her answer until she became aware of our struggle to solve the clue.

I can see that you were definitely able to pick up on Dave's line of thought: time-current and thyme-currant (two sets of homonyms with different spellings and meanings). I think I like this answer, too.

Thyme for a new quiz!

This charity quiz is published by the N.E. Fife Group of Coeliac UK. The entry deadline is August 31, 2009.

We are looking for:
UK MOUNTAINS AND RIVERS

This example is given:
Bill's friend precedes mixed blood vessels = BEN NEVIS

Apparently the clues are arranged in a significant order that may help. (Whatever that means!)

1. The French Gin confusedly goes to town.
2. Flows through Deal, Dover and Hythe.
3. Did Nanny slip here?
4. Occurs in every normal Monday morning.
5. Caution is stirred with a flag and a theologian.

7. Do the Girl Guides hope to meet him?
8. This could have been a wheeled hawk.
9. Behold a horse gets stuck into tea.
10. Discover antler material here.
11. Delta drink for this beat.
12. An unknown chases after 2.
13. Point about dropped, before a predatory fish.
14. The spring follows a hesitation we hear.
15. Briefly sulphur, church, that is Henry Leo.
16. According to McGonagall this was "silvery"
17. My French mixes a Greek character, two fifties and New York.
18. They always flow freely at source in Wales.
19. A slide introduces a shortened corvid.
20. A deer's horn or a wild vetch we hear.
21. He is the last user.
22. A pale asp.
23. It is reported that the bad weather continued.
24. It sounds like a good question.

The remaining 6 clues are anagrams each containing a mountain and a river. For example:
DEER TOWING MARC (2)&(1)= Cairn Gorm and Tweed

25. O.K. LAST NEWT. (1)&(1)
26. FEROMEN BROTH. (2)&(1)
27. LORD RIO HODGE. (1)&(1)
28. HOLLY SUE LEVEN. (1)&(1)
29. CHICK OR MERRY. (1)&(1)
30. PAY TOWN FYNE. (1)&(1)

How's your geography?

LOL, Lucy

Hi Lucy,
Unfortunately, I'm tied up all day, so my input to the new quiz will have to wait until tomorrow afternoon.(sigh....) Maybe you will have solved it all by then. Good luck.

Melissa . . . thanks for telling us to check for new action on "Bjorn Updates". That's cute stuff. We'll watch for more from you here on "Ed's Edition", too.

BJ . . . how are you managing to solve any of the clues in this latest quiz? I live in the UK and I am getting nowhere.

Louise

BJ said...

Hi Lucy,
I agree, this is an almost impossible puzzle. I am looking up names of mountains and rivers in the UK and trying to fit them to the clues, but there are so many that it is hard to find anything useful. Do you think the answers I have so far are feasible? they seem okay to me, but I am not really sure about some of them.

BJ said...

Explanations for answers so far.
4. norm(AL MOND)ay morning
6. D (roman numeral for five hundred; E note of musical scale E for East point of directions.
7. Baden-POWELL, founder of scouts and guides.
16. McGonagall wrote a poem in which he called the TAY river silvery.
22. WHITE for pale, ADDER for asp.
24. WYE for why?
Anagrams 26 and 28 I just looked for rivers and mountains with some of the letters given. Not easy!!

Louise and David said...

Gosh, BJ
I wonder if it's worth the effort?

I think I see a pattern in that, so far, every even number is a river. That might make every odd one a mountain. However, if your number 7 is correct, I am wrong.

What do you think? Shall we scrap this one?

Lucy

BJ said...

Yes, turf the dratted thing! It really is too complicated and the solving of it more frustrating than puzzling (which is fun). So let's accept defeat and retire gracefully.

The April 16th flower petal from my 2009 calendar bouquet urges me to "celebrate for no reason at all".

However, this morning I was already in celebration mode. I will simply have to save that thought for another, less important day. Even before I picked the calendar petal, my Happy Birthday thoughts were winging their way to you in Ottawa.

I hope your 70th birthday is as sparkling, special and spirited as the wine we raise in celebration of YOU today.

Lucy,
I am teaching all day, so don't have much time for the quiz. The only one I recognize immediately is #25:
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
I will work on the rest later.

Holly Gustafson said...

Happy Birthday, BJ! That quiz is a toughie!

The painting is of a bird in the water - Uncle Marty told me the name of the bird twice and still I have forgotten it, though in my defense, the four kids were ecstatic to have "Auntie Smartie" (as Ellie calls him) come over to play with them and were somewhat distracting! : S

Uncle Marty, what is the bird again? I will write it down next time. Oh never mind, I found it in my trusty Audubon field guide - an American Avocet. The composition is amazing! I love it and it has joined my other MSA original on my mantle.

Sonia said...

Happy Birthday BJ!

That quiz is tough.... Maybe #28 has the word "puffer" in it??

BJ said...

Thanks Sonia.
The quiz IS tough.
I think #6 is a NANA bird
# 7. A PEN (female swan)
#14 some kind of warbler
#26 some kind of bachelor bird.
i will follow up on the puffer later. Maybe it could be a Norwegian Puffer - - -?

15. A BIRDIE
16. AN EAGLE
17. AN ALBATROSS

22. AI (i.e. A-one or a bird called Ai)

#19. STARLINGS perhaps. ST could stand for street or road and the letters 'girl' or 'gal' are not consecutive and could be said to be dancing in the word.

BJ said...

#2. CUCKOO CLOCK?

Louise and David said...

Well, BJ
I'm on my way to bed without having cracked another clue in this quiz. I'm making notes of all your suggestions, though. The way I figure it, we are down to our last two posers: #11 and 24.

Well done, you!

Lucy

BJ said...

Lucy,
Do you think #24 could start with:
It's not my..... or
You are an...... or
Not for my.....

#11 What are we not seeing in Scotland?
The vowels e, i and u are not in the word Scotland. Could that be some kind of clue? What else is not in the word?

Lui said...

I think #11 is Gyrfalcon because apparently you are not likely to see one in Scotland.
This is a quote from the Wildlife Herbrides website: '...they are so scarce on mainland Scotland that some birdwatchers would brave the Minch just get a glimpse of a Gyrfalcon of any colour.'
I don't know what it is but I'm sure Louise could give us a rundown on the Minch.

You guys are so far ahead of me in solving these things that all I can do is add controversy to answers already given!!

BJ said...

Well done, Lui,
Now get to work on #24. It has me completely stymied and I think it should be an easy one to get, given the number of letters.

Also, controversy is good in solving puzzles. That's how we eventually come up with the right answers. Check out a few of the other answers. Some are pretty iffy,

Louise and David said...

Well, Lui, I didn't know anything about the Minch until you mentioned it. Apparently it is a Strait in NW Scotland. It separates the Scottish Highlands from the Northern Hebrides. I found out that the Minch is 40 to 70 km wide with rapid currents and great depths. There are ferries that serve the people who live on the outer islands but weather conditions can be unpredictable and extreme at any time of year.

So, now that we have transferred "GYRFALCON" from #13 to #11. what will we put in its place?

And what about #24 ... it's got nothing to do with me (3,3,2,6)?

Lucy

Mary Ellen said...

Vic & I saw BJ's answer to #1 which was purple dove, but Vic says what about the drink 'Yellow Bird'
1 oz. Bacardi Rum
1/2 oz. Galliano liqueur
1/2 oz. vodka
4 oz. sweet & sour mix

Pour all alcoholic ingredients into a highball glass. Stir sour mix in a mixer and fill glasses.

We'll be back. Vic wants to peek at some of the other unsolved ones!

Love,
ME xoxo

Louise and David said...

Welcome, Vic! The more the merrier! We have really struggled with some of these "flighty" answers. Check them all, please and don't be reluctant to call us on any of them. We want to get them right.

I like the yellow bird but neither it nor the purple dove sound all that "simple"!

LOL, Lucy

BJ said...

I like Yellow Bird better than Purple Dove for #1. How about looking at all the clues, Vic, not just the unsolved ones. Some of them we are very sure of. Others are pretty iffy. eg: #s 2,8,19,22. And we are desperate for answers to #s 13 & 24.
BJ

BJ said...

Oops, Lucy and I had the same idea at the same time. And I like Lucy's "flighty" better than "iffy".

Mary Ellen said...

Hi All,
Thanks for the welcome to Vic. Her mind seems to work likes yours when it comes to puzzles. I'm just along for the ride!!!Having fun!
We saw that #13 and #24 were unsolved and tried our best, but haven't found the answer yet. Vic wonders if the beginning of the answer to #24 is: It's not my.............. (Insert proper bird on dotted line).

Love,
ME & Vic
xoxo

Louise and David said...

yep, ME, that's my line of thought, too. But which bird fits on the dotted line?????

Lucy

Louise and David said...

Hey, BJ, ME and Vic, our neighbour, Peggy, says that there is an expression, "It's not my pigeon", meaning that it is not my affair or concern.

How about that?

Lucy

BJ said...

Way to go Peggy,
Now, on to #13.

BJ said...

BTW: I just checked the Internet, and sure enough this is what it says about It's not my pigeon: Not of material interest to oneself. Not one's business. Not an activity one would typically engage in under normal circumstances. Hurrah for Peggy.

BJ said...

Could #13 be BLACKBIRD.
The common blackbird of nursery rhyme fame (four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie) was a Thrush. Perhaps the thrush lost its energy when baked in the pie and turned into a blackbird when it began to sing. There is a queen (eating bread and honey) in the nursery rhyme. There are also the initials HRH (her royal highness)in thrush.
Okay, okay, I'm reaching here, but I can't seem to think of any other solution.

Louise and David said...

That sounds good enough to me, BJ. I especially like it when you take me through your line of thinking.

I have entered BLACKBIRD for our answer to #13. The quiz is finished now unless anyone else wants to make revisions.

Lucy

BJ said...

Hi Lucy,
I will keep looking at the quiz in case some other things come to mind. The ones I think are a sure thing are #3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15,16,17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29.

Not so sure: 1, 2, 8, 10, 13, 19, 22, and 30.

Thanks for the recap, BJ. Like you, I am confident of several of our answers. However, it's a bit discouraging to have "iffy" responses on 8 of 30 items.

I will be sure to enclose a self-addressed envelope with our entry form so that we at least get an answer key when the quiz winner is announced.

Love, Lucy

Happy Birthday, Christopher!

Our Book of Days says that a 35th celebration may be remembered with a gift of CORAL. As you know, coral is a sturdy, often hidden substance that is colourful and surprising.

So, we wish you a great Coral Birthday, Christopher - one that celebrates YOU.

Cheers, and may today's celebrations be followed by a year that brings lots of good things your way.

Lots of love,
Louise and David
