May 1st, winter is just about over, April was threatening to go out like a lion with 5 to 10 cm of snow but they were wrong...again. We had a great day the last day of April and May has come in very quietly and bright.
Love
Edward

May 1st. Winter is definitely over here. The yard (and city) is full of tulips, the grass is green and the leaves are coming out so fast that we can watch them grow. A lovely time of year. Happy May, Everyone.
BJ
Thanks for your bright May wishes. Here in St. Andrews the new month has made a chilly arrival. That means there's plenty of room for improvement.
One happy bit of springtime news is the return of our swan couple to St. Andrews. We don't know where they have been for the past few weeks but perhaps now they can work on building a nest and bringing another batch of cygnets into the harbour.
Lucy
BTW ... any word out of Calgary on winners at last weekend's Sweet Adelines Competition? 3...2...1?
Ciao Blogatives,
David and I are on the eve of our second trip to Italy. Tomorrow we will take an early morning train to Birmingham, England where we will overnight. The following day we will fly to Trieste. From there, we hope to drive through coastal communities to Venice. We will have seven days to explore more of a country that already feels a lot like home to us.
Italy does have Internet Cafes but back in March I did not find them "user-friendly". It's likely that I will be away from the blog from May 6 to 14. I thought you should know that because it seems like a long absence to me.
Arrivederci e tanti cari saluti,
Lucy
I will now post early birthday greetings to family members who will celebrate during our blog-absence:

Lucy,
Stephen and Louise will be in Myrtle Beach on his birthday. They left on their motorcycles on Saturday, spent the first night in Quakertown PA, last night in Virginia Beach VA, and for the next 2 nights they will be in Cape Hatteras, NC. I will send your birthday wishes on to him.
Buon viaggio. Have a blast.
Love, BJ
Thanks, BJ, I just knew that those Harleys would be rolling at this time of year. I just didn't realize how much road Stephen and Louise would be covering. Wow!
Our own travels begin in just over an hour's time. I've got a few last minute things to do. Bob's Italian branch of our family tree
is already packed and ready for any new info I can learn.
I'll be in touch but I don't know when,
Lucy
wow, is that a record?? a week without a comment??
If it weren't for kenneth, I would have never found this site. I thought the last entry was April 30. But then, I ain't too bright sometimes.
Thanks K
Marty
Guess it's just and me Marty!!!
AND ME.........
I'm here.
yeah us!
I'm here, too, but not for long. Don, Vic, Bob and I leave for Atlantic Canada today. We are driving to Maine, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Quebec. See you all in two weeks.
Ciao!
I'm back on the blog after another wonderful holiday in sunny Italy. St. Andrews has welcomed us home with a cold wind, driving rain and a long list of "things to do".
"Dropping in on Ed's Edition" was a high priority. I love the way it puts me back on the family scene.
Now I'm hoping that BJ, Bob, Vic and Don are enjoying their Atlantic Canada Experience. How can they do otherwise when they are travelling in such good company?
Luv to all, Louise

Happy Anniversary, Holly and James!
Our Book of Days suggests that an eleventh anniversary may be celebrated with a gift of steel. It's a material that is durable and strong, yet capable of elasticity, versatility and great beauty.
Today we join Eddie, Mia, Lui and Ellie in celebrating their parents' "steel" anniversary. May your marriage to one another continue to strengthen the gifts faith, hope and love in yourselves and in your children.
On this special weekend, we hope you have a Saturday time-for-two and a Sunday of family fun. Cheers!
Blessings, wishes and lots of love,
Louise and David

Hi again!
Our St. Andrews weather has brightened up considerably on this third Sunday in May. That's a good thing because David is competing in an interclub golf tournament this afternoon.
As for me, I have a lot of catching up to do around our home and on line. I have decided to make the next few hours as productive as possible, beginning here on Ed's Edition. It always nice to pay a virtual visit to family around the world. I hope all is well!
Lots of love, Louise

We hope your eighth wedding anniversary is a day of great celebration in the Rathwell household.
In Presley and Corson you have the best proof of your love for one another. This special day belongs to all of you. Enjoy every minute of it!

#26. Warsaw?
I should be working right now.
#33. Lisbon
That's two more good ones, Sonia. 17 down and 23 to go!
Don't work too hard. Someday you, too, will be retired.
LOL, Lucy
31. AUCKLAND
34. AMSTERDAM
(These may be easy answers for those who drop their H's but they are tricky for the rest of us.)
LOL, Lucy
Thanks for the anniversary wishes, Auntie Louise! Unfortunately, we did not check before we bought presents for each other and neither one of us ended up with steel (Jamie gave me chocolate and I ordered his favourite channel - the Food Network. However, he is off to pick up some galvanized steel planters for our garden today... maybe we can consider this our anniversary gift to each other!
As for the quiz, I am of no help.
Well, how about Dublin for #2?
And #7 must be Barcelona.
#9 is Glasgow.
#11 is Victoria (there is apparently a Victor Meldrew character on a show on BBC)
#18 is Baghdad (did I spell that right?)
I don't know #24, but a coven is made up of 13 witches, if that helps...
#25 I would guess johannesburg - not sure of the spelling but that's 12 letters...
#28 is Istanbul
#39 I also don't know, but there is a basque separatist group called ETA and a character (on the BBC again...) called Val Doonican.
And #40 is probably Florence
You're welcome, Holly! BTW...I like the idea of the galvanized planters being James and your "steel anniversary" gift to one another.
I also like all of your answers to the latest quiz. Well done! That takes us well over the half way mark with 27 answers.
Dave thinks rugby players score a "try" when they touch the ball to the ground behind the goal line. Your coven would make the answer to #24 COVENTRY. I'll check that info on google.
I've got one more, too:
38. STOCKHOLM
(29 down, 11 to go!)
Louise
Yep COVENTRY it is!
We're three quarters of the way through this one!
LOL, Lucy
Holly, I also googled VALETA for #39 and discovered that it is a town in Spain. Well done, you!
For someone who describes herself as being "of no help" with the quiz, you've made great strides towards the finishing line.
Thanks, Louise
It was all a matter of timing - usually I check in after all the easier riddles have been solved and only the toughest ones are left!

Happy Birthday, Diane!
May is a nice month for a birthday, especially in Saskatchewan. With any luck, it's too late for snow and too early for mosquitoes.
Whatever the weather, though, we hope you have a day that's easy and trouble-free. May the year ahead bring you many happy times with family and friends. Cheers!
Love and best wishes,
Louise and David

Your May 21st birthday has a way of reminding us that every day of life is a gift and every year, a milestone.
We join in your birthday celebration with a double toast to life. May today be one of joy and thanksgiving; and may the coming year bring just the right mix of normal and new for you. Cheers!

By way of a reminder, we still need answers to:
5. Grab a sleigh here.(5)
8. We need rebate back to live here.(8)
10. Her tan looks good.(6)
13. Who shouts go then burgh?(10)
15. You have nice way with water.(6)
17. Assistant follows mixed up deal.

30. British Rail line here, not likely. (6)

#5. BASLE (Thanks to my friend, Margaret).
BTW ... Kenneth, I see your exclamation mark on ABERDEEN! I certainly should have seen THAT city in the clue.
We're down to the wire now. Four more to go(and all without Betty Jo who is now one week into a glorious Atlantic holiday).
LOL, Lucy
Paul flew into Glasgow on Wednesday to spend his two-week annual vacation with us. This morning, he and David had an 8:30 tee time on the Old Course. The sun is shining, the wind is light and the course is fair. Paul says he is living every golfer's dream.

Happy Birthday, Ann-Marie
The expression "Life begins at 40" has a ring of truth to it. You are entering what can be one of the most satisfying and productive decades of life. It is a time when training, skills, experience and relationships seem to come together in unexpected and delightful ways.
We hope today's RUBY Birthday celebration is enjoyable for you and your family, Ann-Marie.
May this year be one of continuing success and great personal satisfaction.
Cheers, best wishes and lots of love,
Louise and David

That sounds like lots of fun for our Birthday Boy! We're thinking of you as you celebrate being 3!
Party on ...
We miss you, too!
Nice work, Sonia!
I think #30 is BERLIN. Right or wrong, all the blanks are filled in now. That finishes off our world quiz.
It's time to move on to animals...
This next quiz is sponsored by SENSE SCOTLAND. Entries must be in by June 30th.
The answers are ANIMALS.
The example ???? is:
Let a point. WEASEL
(This could be difficult, eh!)
1. An advantage for the graduate.
2. Cash surrounds a thousand.
3. One hundred appear to be crippled.
4. The French first is satisfactory.
5. About a mate.
6. Softly, softly in the same direction.
7. Glide along backwards.
8. Declare second and fifth.
9. Part of breakfast is confused.
10. A few have nothing.
11. Mother is on a high.
12. Pay better attention.
13. I am somewhere in Majorca.
14. Is the waterside all at sea?
15. Ditch beer.
16. He let pan boil over.
17. A degree of anger.
18. Return to a shopping centre.
19. A river cylinder.
20. The label had nothing written on it.
21. The fishmonger billed me for trout.
22. I pin guage on instrument.
23. Stressing a point with true spirit.
24. I rage very loudly.
25. Obstruct a small piece.
26. Sue and Mo were inseparable.
27. Connect gas at junction.
28. Small advertisement for kitchen utensil.
29. I gave my red rod a re-paint.
30. A goat run with a direction.
The quiz closes with this wish:
GOOD LUCK!
LOL, Lucy
Whoa..I go away for 2 weeks and you guys do a puzzle without me. We just arrived home and I am too tired to do much, but I'll start the new puzzle with a few answers:
10. MOOSE ('some' plus O for nothing)
18. LLAMA (a mall backwards)
20. GOAT (tag plus O)
26. MOUSE
29. DROMEDARY (anagram of 'my red rod a')
I'll try some more tomorrow.
BTW, we had a fabulous holiday in Atlantic Canada.
love, BJ
Oops, I forgot to add #30.
30.ORANGUTAN (an anagram of 'a goat run' plus N for North)
Welcome back, BJ!
We missed you here on the blog but we knew that you were out there having a great time in Atlantic Canada.
Thanks for making such an impressive start on our latest quiz. Your explanations of how you arrived at the answers are all very helpful.
I've got one, too:
13. ORCA (no explanation needed)
LOL, Lucy
14. HORSE ('shore' scrambled)
2. MONKEY (money with K for thousand in middle)
22. GUINEA PIG (anagram of 'I pin gauge')
2. CAMEL (C for one hundred plus lame for crippled)
Oops, CAMEL should have been
#3, not 2
Nice work, BJ!
28. PANDA (pan and ad backwards)
Lucy
Lucy,
Could #5 be IMPALA, anagram for I'm a pal?
7. WOLF (flow backwards)
25. RABBIT (combination of bar and bit)
Wow, BJ!
That IMPALA seems like a real stretch but then some of these answers have been exactly that.
Let's keep #5 open to consideration. The rest of the answers are perfect fits.
Along the same lines, do you think #6 could be SHEEP? sh...followed by two easts and a P for making the point?
Lucy
?????????
What are you talking about? YIKES!
Love,
ME
xoxoxooxo
Ha ha ha ha ha . . .
ME, you are too funny!
LOL, Lucy
Lucy,
Yes to #6.
And I am pretty sure
24 is GIRAFFE (anagram I rage and add ff for double forte which in music means very loud.
16. ELEPHANT (anagram of 'he let pan'.
21. GERBIL 'fishmon GER BIL led'
Now for some iffy ones:
Could #9 be BEAR (first 4 letters of the word breakfast scrambled or 'confused')
#11. PUMA (ma for mother, up for high).
#15. BEAVER (BE av ER) AV ('av' providing a ditch or cut in the word 'beer'
#23. ELAND (elan for spirit, d for point, dot, or period).
BTW--Has anyone figured out how to get WEASEL out of 'Let a point'? It seems like a useless example to me.
#1. BABOON (boon for advantage, BA for graduate.
#12. RAT (bette R AT tention)
#17. HART (from a degree of 'wrath')
BJ, I like all your answers, even the "iffy" ones. However, I think BEAVER is a better answer for #8 - put AVER (declare) with the second and fifth letters of the alphabet B and E.
At first I didn't think WEASEL was a good example either but it does set the pattern of having to anagram many of the answers. To let is LEASE and W is the compass point but then you have to mix up the letters.
Yes, BEAVER fits number 8 much better. I will keep working on ditch beer. And WEASEL seems so obvious now. Well done.
Hi Lucy,
Do you think 'Ditch beer' could be as simple as dropping the 'b' and making the answer DEER?
Yes, I do, BJ! Wow, sometimes an obvious answer is harder to see than a hidden one.
Lucy
Lucy,
This is quite a reach, but could #4 be KOALA, A-OK for satisfactory and LA as the French article 'la'.I can't come up with anything else.
Definitely, BJ - Clever!
I also think we should go with your answer, IMPALA for #5
Do you think 27 could OX - oxygen being the gas and X being the crossroads?
That leaves us with #19 - a river cylinder.
Lucy
Lucy,
Your answer for #27 is BRILLIANT. Wish I had thought of it! "Well done, you"
Haha! I came to see if the last puzzle had been finally solved and you guys have already solved another one!
Well, almost, Holly, we still have one more clue to crack - #19 - a river cylinder. Are there any takers on that one?
