From the western part of our great country: HAPPY CANADA DAY.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: Canada is one of this planet's most comfortable and caring societies. The United Nations Human Development Index cited the country as the most desirable place in the world to live. -Time Magazine
QUOTE OF THE DAY: We on this continent should never forget that men first crossed the Atlantic not to find soil for their ploughs but to secure liberty for their souls. - Robert J. McCracken
Ditto from Scotland where we are wearing red, white and blue in celebration of July 4.
BTW . . . on July 1 we were on the isle of Islay off Scotland's west coast, toasting our Canadian family and friends with a wee dram of 12-year-old Bowmore. Islay has 8 famous distilleries; Bowmore is just one of three that we toured during our first visit to Islay.
Thanks for that bit of family history, Louise. I love it, too. I remember each summer when we were growing up, Mom & Dad would renew that anniversary stroll. I knew the 13th was their first date, but I had totally not thought about it today. Thanks.
Yes, I do, Louise. In fact Dad could tell you how many months they had been married any time you asked. I can't tell you how many months I've been married.....at least not right off the top of my head. I could figure it out, but Dad always knew exactly how many months and always wished Mom a happy anniversary on the 17th of every month! What a guy!
Hey, I have to figure out how many years I've been married, never mind months. That was a really special tradition Dad started and continued all their lives.
Very funny, BJ (BTW...by my calculation, you are just one day shy of 47 years - congratulations!).
On this 40th anniversary of the Lunar Landing, I recall Dad locating and identifying the features of the moonscape through the use of his telescope and related maps.
I also remember how excited Dad was to be watching events unfold that day, through live TV coverage. He told me that he felt even more drawn to space exploration after that lunar contact. Far from spoiling the moon's mystique, the astronauts had opened up a new frontier to which Dad would readily have travelled, given the opportunity.
There are three switches downstairs. Each corresponds to one of the three light bulbs in the attic. You can turn the switches on and off and leave them in any position. How would you identify which switch corresponds to which light bulb, if you are only allowed one trip upstairs?
Marty, I have a solution to your puzzle, this is what I would do. Labelling the switches A,B,and W I would turn A on, no wait, I would turn B on and wait a few minutes. Now I would turn B off and turn A on. Then I'd go up to the attic, the light bulb lit would be the A switch light. The bulb off but hot from being on would be switch B, the bulb off and not hot would be switch W.
Holy Cow Edward, I knew it would have something to do with hot and cold and on, but trying to figure out the switches was beyond me. Somebody send an easier puzzle.
Welcome to Canada, Lucy and David. although the welcome in your part of Canada may be a little TOO warm for you? What is happening there?
Wow Louise. I didn't even know you were going to be in Canada at this time. I mailed your birthday card to Scotland! I guess you'll have it when you return.
How is our wonderful Okanagan managing these days? The devastation looks brutal on the news. I know Paul lives on the west side of Kelowna and that's the side where all the fires have been. I hope all is well for him amd his home!
Marty, Good to see you on the blog.
Ed, Good to see you, too!
The two of you have my head spinning with light bulbs and swithches and the alphabet! If BJ is confused, where does that leave me????
I didn't think it was That complicated. I think you guys are humouring me. You are right Ed, all you do is turn a switch on for a few minutes to let the bulb warm up and the rest is easy.
Sorry about that, ME! With any luck I may be able to get your birthday greetings redirected to Westbank. I'll see what I can do. Thanks.
You will not be surprised to hear that the Okanagan Valley is holding its own against the forest fires that threaten to spoil her beauty. The people who fight these fires are an amazingly dedicated and effective force. Here in Westbank, Paul, David and I are comfortable, safe and still breathing quality air. However, the battles with blazes continue in the distance and other BC communities are on evacuation alert. This is a dangerous time of year in tinder-dry forests.
As you know, Dave and I move about the world on very short notice. Canada was always in our plans but travel details were vague until the last minute. Expect an update email soon.
Marty, No one is humoring you! Did you go back and read Ed's solution out loud? By the time I got to the end of it I was laughing so hard that I lost track of which switch was which. As easy as A,B and W, indeed!
Thanks for the info Louise. Glad to know you are all safe and no damage has been done to Paul's place. I love the Okanagan Valley and I know she will rally in time! Nature's elements are awesome in their fury and also in their beauty. Let's hope Mother Nature brings some much needed rain to the area.
I wish we could send some of our rain to BC. We have had rain almost every day in July, and are often under severe thunderstorm warnings. Last night was yet another deluge. And rain is forecast for another 5 or 6 days. Ahh..Canada!
Kenneth...thanks for this blog wish that adds to your Facebook greetings. What a happy day this is turning out to be. Cheers, eh?
Barbara...your "hugs and love from Calgary" have already gone a long way towards making this a "beautiful day" for me. Here's back at you ... xoxoxo
BJ...seeing you at our September reunion is a certain promise that today's greatness will continue long after this July 31, 2009 draws to a close. Thanks, Sis!
Whoa, Marty, that's a terrific brotherly greeting on my birthday. Thanks! I'm being showered with love and warm wishes from family and friends today. Whatever made me think that the family blog site is not where it's at?

Wow. That's impressive, Lucy,

Do you also remember the Monthaversary cards that Dad sometimes gave to Mom on the 17th of any month other than June?

Hi y'all
I didn't know the blog was still up until ME told me
Here's a fun puzzle:
There are three switches downstairs. Each corresponds to one of the three light bulbs in the attic. You can turn the switches on and off and leave them in any position.

The bulb off but hot from being on would be switch B, the bulb off and not hot would be switch W.
Now I'm really confused . . . but safe and well in Westbank.
LOL, Lucy
Holy Cow Edward,

By the way, I know from first-hand experience that the same can be said of a younger sister.
Lots of love, Louise
Happy Birthday Louise,
Have a great birthday!

Wow, how can I do otherwise, Ed? The love and wishes just keep on coming. Thanks!
