The boat is so tiny however, that it can only hold 2 boys or 1 soldier. Still, all the soldiers succeed in crossing the river in the boat. How?
Okay, I'll give this a try. The two boys go across the river in the boat. When they reach the shore, one of them gets out and the other takes the boat back alone.
Now, one of the soldiers gets into the boat and rows across on his own, leaving the second boy on the shore with the detachment. On the first soldier's arrival, the boy rows back across the river and picks up his friend. The two of them then cross the river together......
They keep repeating that process until everyone is safely on the other side.
The title of the problem tells you how to approach this question. A bus leaves Moscow for Tula at noon. An hour later a cyclist leaves Tula for Moscow, moving, of course, slower than the bus. When bus and cyclist meet, which of the two will be farther from Moscow?
In an email, Ed said: "For the New Year I have resolved to clean up my garage enough to get the front wheels of the car inside in an attempt to keep the motor warm enough to get a start in the morning." Does anyone else have a funny (or serious) resolution they would be willing to share with us? Ed, please feel free to contribute another resolution.
Well, I have also resolved to spend less than $150.00 on slurpees this year. I have to ration myself to two per week, that should do it as long as I use refillable cups.
I should also mention that I have sort of a grace period in that the beginning of my New Year actually starts on the 16th. There have been many a time I have failed in those first two weeks but using my grace period I have made it as far as February 2nd...once.
Good luck, Ed. it looks like you might need it. This year I resolve to read one book at a time, so that I don't get the characters or situations from one mixed up with another. I will also try to buy fewer books.
By the way, Ed. Is the answer to your question about the bus and cyclist this? They will be equal distances from Moscow, because where ever they meet, one will be headed one way and the other the other way.....but they'll be in the same spot thus the same distance from Moscow. Or is there a trick answer?
I resolve not to eat anyone's (Bob's) licorice allsorts without first asking.
That was the trick to the question, exactly, wherever they meet they will be equal distance. Good job.
Here's another:
Milkman's puzzle Honest John says: "What I don't know about milk is scarely worth mentioning," but he was flabbergasted one day when each of two ladies asked him for two quarts of milk. One lady had a 5 quart pail and the other had a 4 quart pail. John had only two 10 gallon cans, each full of milk. How did he measure out exactly two quarts of milk for each lady? It is a juggling trick pure and simple, devoid of trick or device, but it calls for much cleverness to get two quarts of milk into those two pails without making use of any receptacles other than the two pails and two full cans.
Good resolution by the way. For Bob anyway. Deanie would probably like me to do one like that, perhaps in regards to her weakness...Miss Vicki's Salt and Vinegar chips.
There will probably be much excitement in your home today as Mia, Ellie, Eddie and Lui help you celebrate your 35th birthday. Congratulations and best wishes!
Here in St. Andrews we are raising a toast to you and to this special year in which you will add one more child to your happy, healthy family. God bless you and each of them abundantly!
The two large 10 gallon pails each contain 40 quarts. I began by filling the 5 qt pail from one of them and the 4 qt pail from the other.
My series of pours looks like this: 40 40 0 0 (original containers) First transfer: 35 36 5 4 Top up the 36qt from the 5qt pail: 35 40 1 4 Pour the 4qt into 5qt pail: 35 40 5 0 Refill the 4qt from the 35qt: 31 40 5 4 Empty the 5qt into the 31qt: 36 40 0 4 Pour the 4qt into the 5qt pail: 36 40 4 0 Top up the 5qt from the 40qt: 36 39 5 0 Fill the 4qt from the 5qt pail: 36 39 1 4 Put the contents of 5qt into 36qt: 37 39 0 4 Fill the 5qt from the 39qt: 37 34 5 4 Empty the 4qt into the 34qt: 37 38 5 0 Fill the 37qt from the 5qt: 40 38 2 0 Fill the 4qt from the 40qt: 36 38 2 4 Top up the 38qt from the 4qt: 36 40 2 2
Thus, the ladies got their milk and I didn't spill a drop!
This is the week that wedding bells are ringing for Holly and Keenan in Mexico.
With Britain in a deep freeze, we are happy to be warming ourselves with thoughts of love and marriage in sunny Mexico. A wee dram will go a long way to warming our hearts, too. Cheers!
Congratulations Holly and Keenan! We wish you a long and happy life together. Enjoy the fun of sharing your happiness with family and friends all week long.
Thanks for the encouragement, Ed and BJ. I have to admit that it took me so long to deliver that milk that I think it may have turned to butter in the process.

Although you probably have to work on this Wednesday birthday, we hope it is a day that is filled with sincere and warm wishes from friends and family alike.
At the end of your day, we like to imagine you at home with Rob, Jessica and Nicholas on hand to celebrate this special occasion with you. As you gather together as a family, we raise a toast to your good health, Bonnie, and to happiness all around.
Congratulations and warm greetings on this cold, mid-winter's day. Here in St. Andrews we will be saluting you with a wee dram and a celebratory toast on your 32nd wedding anniversary.
Here's to a wonderful year in 2010! May it be made all the more special for you by the joy of Lindsey's upcoming marriage and by the continuing happiness of Luke and Shannon. Cheers!
Thank you, Louise for the Saturday birthday greeting. I am on my way from 59 to 60 and am enjoying the journey. It was a great day with family and friends.
Hi, Thom, It's also nice to meet you back on this site. Your presence reminds us to tell you how much we are enjoying your daily articles on Blogging at the Big Dog.
-----------------------------------
Ciao, Edward, I can tell from your response that you "got the message" on your birthday. Che bello! (BTW...I also missed "Eduardo" in your funny contribution to the latest Barker Bugle.)
Ed, By my count you are up to number 8 in your multiple personalities. Besides Ed, Edward, Led, Eddie, Edweirdo, Edweirdia (your feminine side) and Eduardo (the Italiano), Freddie (the frustrated one) has recently appeared. I wonder where it will all end?
Thomas, Kenneth and Johanne, We are really enjoying your blogs.
Eduardo just got hold of the Bugle, he's miffed at me for forgetting about him, says I shouldn't get on his wrong side , started waving his arms and yapping in Italian not realising I have no understanding, I don't think his english is that good either, I think he meant to call me a horse's ass but he went away muttering something about a horse's head.
Today is the 12th anniversary of Marcia and Tony's kidney transplant surgery.
Once a year we remember this very special event with a celebratory toast in honor of our sister, the donor and our brother, the recipient. On the other hand, Marcia and Tony live with the miracle of this successful transplant every day of their lives. Well done!
Thanks BJ! January is one busy month for special celebrations (the busiest, I think). Edward is learning some Italian on his own so I like to bring out the Eduardo in him.
I hear there's a big family party in Regina today. The post-Christmas gathering at Deanie and Ed's home should go a long way towards making your 2010 birthday a memorable one.
We hope you have a great day from beginning to end, Michael. May today's mini-reunion add fun and excitement to your personal celebration of 54 years of life. Congratulations!
PARTY DAY! Wish we could be there. Please celebrate as if we were, and, as with every family reunion, believe in those ghosts who inevitably turn up. Love, BJ
The party yesterday was great, Vic phoned shortly before it started to wish us all a good day. I think now that I should have put out a guest book. Chris and Ron were the first to arrive. I lose the order after that. James and Christine brought Presley and Corson. Presley and Ellie had a great time together. Christopher and Leanne came with Aiden to round out Chris and Ron's family. Christine and her boyfriend Mike came, Len and Kelly, Mike,Dianne and Luke, Tony and Carol, Rob and Bonnie were there with Nick and Jessica, Chris and Ron went and picked up aunt Barbara for me and Pat Cooper had come by and was kind enough to take her home for us. Barbara had a wonderful time going through old photos and she left with a good number of them and a couple of mom's rosaries. My own family was there of course. We had plenty of good food and drink, lots of laughs and good conversation. Tony, Carol, Mike and Dianne ended it all shortly before midnight.
Well, Edward, the next best thing to being at the party ourselves is having your assurance that everyone who was able to get there "had a really good time".
Thanks to you and Deanie, 2010 has already had its first family gathering in Regina. The guest list is impressive, too.
We hope the success of yesterday's party will inspire more such mini-reunions in the months ahead. With any luck, maybe we will get to one of them too. Cheers!
I'm not losing it but since no one asked what the hell i was talking about I'll just tell you, or maybe you all know.
When things in your life seem , almost too much to handle, When 24 Hours in a day is not enough, Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.
A professor stood before his philosophy class And had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students, if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open Areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
'Now,' said the professor, as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - family, children, health, Friends, and Favorite passions – Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, Your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car.
The sand is everything else --The small stuff.
'If you put the sand into the jar first,' He continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, You will never have room for the things that are important to you.
So...
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play With your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner.
There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.
'Take care of the golf balls first -- The things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.
The professor smiled. 'I'm glad you asked'.
It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'
Thanks for the explanation, Edward. I was just about to ask what you were talking about when the answer appeared. It's a great story. BTW,I liked the part about cleaning the house and coffee with friends.
Oh goodness, Edward. I thought you meant we should be sure to do the things we like to do most in life. For David, that is golf and he was out on the links playing a round with friends even as you recommended that we should "take care of the golf balls first". As fate would have it, I was at home having coffee with a friend.
President Sarkozy visits a steel factory. To the boss's surprise, the president greets an employee, Morton, with a warm hug. The same thing happens when Barack Obama visits, and again during Vladimir Putin's tour. Unimpressed, the boss says to Morton, "I bet you don't know the pope." Morton shrugs. "We play gold together." The gauntlet has been tossed, and the boss pays their way to the Vatican. During the Benediction, Morton slips away. Sure enough, he reappears-side by side with the pope. Two Chinese tourists tap the boss on the shoulder and ask, "Who's the guy in white standing with Morton?"
Ciao Edward! Besides having a great day yesterday, David and I got a good laugh at your joke about Morton. Thanks for another touch of humor on Ed's Edition.
Thank you, Louise, for the kind anniversary wishes on our first decade (of many)! I love your notion of "bringing out the best in each other". I think it's true.

I picked up a book titled "What Color is Your Parachute", I was hoping to find out what I should be when I grow up, but I'm an idiot, I picked up the Greek version.
Ciao, Eduardo Dave has just headed into town to see if he can find me the Italian version. That way, if nothing else, I should be able to read Italian when I grow up.
Here in St. Andrews, it's a clear, sunny day. I'm hoping that the night sky is star-studded and moon-lit when I step outside to raise a February 9th toast in remembrance of Dad.
A quote for Valentine's Day: I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon. ~Author Unknown

1.IN THE SUMMER OF '69 2. 1814 3. WHEN THE OLD MAN DIED 4. 7510 5. IN THE YEAR OF '92 (1892) 6. WHEN THE RIFLES FIRED AGAIN 7. EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT 8. SOME DAY WHEN HIS CRYIN'S DONE 9. ON DESOLATION ROW 10. WHEN THE MOON IS IN THE 7TH HOUSE AND JUPITER ALIGNS WITH MARS.
Edward, #9 should probably be when the moon is almost hidden and the stars are beginning to shine, and the fortune-telling lady has even taken all her things inside. (the when, not the where, as in my first answer.)
Your special day is already drawing to a close here in St. Andrews. We hope your broken arm, now mending in its cast, has not kept you from having a full and happy celebration.
Anyway, happy birthday to you, our honorary family member and dear friend. We toast your happiness, health and healing now and throughout the coming year. Cheers!
We hope you and Keenan are planning a special celebration on this last Sunday in February. We would not be at all surprised if you spent part of your day watching Canada's hockey team go for Olympic gold. That could be "the icing on the cake".
In any case, have a great 27th birthday, Holly. We wish you another year of good health and much happiness. Cheers!

Hi Mary Ellen,
I like your New Year's Day quotation.
Don't be so sure that I have solved the puzzle. I've got a feeling that (coming from Edward) it's a trick question. We'll have to wait and see.
Love, Lucy
Good job on the puzzle Louise, those two little boys had a lot of rowing to do.

It wasn't a ruse after all. Sorry for suspecting you of trickery, Ed!

Speedily yet causiously.

That's a great idea, I also resolve to read 1 book this year.
Oops! I read Betty Jo's wrong. Cancel that last entry of mine. Jeez I feel like I just called out Bingo! without actually having one.

This year I resolved not to make a resolution so that I might avoid the disappointment of breaking it.
However, maybe after spending so much time juggling milk from one container into another, I should promise to limit the hours I spend doing puzzles.
Still, I'm resisting the impulse to make any resolutions for 2010. So far so good . . .
LOL, Lucy
And speaking of milk, Ed . . .
The two large 10 gallon pails each contain 40 quarts. I began by filling the 5 qt pail from one of them and the 4 qt pail from the other.
My series of pours looks like this:

Put the contents of 5qt into 36qt:

Fill the 4qt from the 40qt:
36 38 2 4
Top up the 38qt from the 4qt:
36 40 2 2
Thus, the ladies got their milk and I didn't spill a drop!
Wow! I'm impressed.
This is how Honest John did it:
Fill the 5 qt pail from can A
Fill the 4 qt pail from 5qt pail leaving 1 qt in 5 qt pail.
Empty 4 qt pail back into can A.
Pour the qt from 5qt into 4qt pail.
Fill 5qt pail from can A again.
Fill 4qt from 5qt leaving two in 5qt.
Empty 4 qt into can A
Fill 4 qt from can B
Pour from 4 qt into can A until A is filled, leaving two qts in 4 qt pail.
Each pail now holds 2 qts, can A is full and can B is missing 4 qts.
My brain is absolutely reeling! Even given the 2 answers I am having a lot of trouble filling the pails.

Lucy,
Nice remembrance of Mom today; thank you.
Ed,
By my count you are up to number 8 in your multiple personalities. Besides Ed, Edward, Led, Eddie, Edweirdo, Edweirdia (your feminine side) and Eduardo (the Italiano), Freddie (the frustrated one) has recently appeared. I wonder where it will all end?
Thomas, Kenneth and Johanne,
We are really enjoying your blogs.

Davvero, Edward? Credo che tu hai bisogna della protetzione da Eduardo. Correri!
Well done!
Thanks, Marcia and congratulations, Tony. Cheers!
Lots of love,
Louise and David
Geez, Louise,
I love your blogging, but this having to translate from Italian to English is hard work; thank goodness for Google.
Marcia and Tony,
Happy Anniversary! What a success story. I am so happy for you both.
Ed, etc. etc.
Good luck with Eduardo. Multiple personalities create quite a lot of problems, don't they?

Thanks BJ! January is one busy month for special celebrations (the busiest, I think). Edward is learning some Italian on his own so I like to bring out the Eduardo in him.

Happy Birthday, Michael!
Cheers and lots of love,

We had a really good time,
Lots of love
Ed
Well, Edward, the next best thing to being at the party ourselves is having your assurance that everyone who was able to get there "had a really good time".
Thanks to you and Deanie, 2010 has already had its first family gathering in Regina. The guest list is impressive, too.
We hope the success of yesterday's party will inspire more such mini-reunions in the months ahead. With any luck, maybe we will get to one of them too. Cheers!
Lots of love,
Louise and David.

January days, where did you go?
(Time flies.)
What will February bring?
(Kelly, Len and Amy to St. Andrews for sure.)
I'm not losing it but since no one asked what the hell i was talking about I'll just tell you, or maybe you all know.
When things in your life seem , almost too much to handle,
When 24 Hours in a day is not enough,
Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.
A professor stood before his philosophy class
And had some items in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly,
He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students, if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
them into the jar.
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively
filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
'Now,' said the professor, as the laughter subsided,
'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things - family,
children, health, Friends, and Favorite passions –
Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, Your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car.
The sand is everything else --The small stuff.
'If you put the sand into the jar first,' He continued,
'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,
You will never have room for the things that are important to you.
So...
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play With your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.
There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.
'Take care of the golf balls first --
The things that really matter.
Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.
The professor smiled.
'I'm glad you asked'.
It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'
Thanks for the story. It's a good one.
Love, Louise
Well, the groundhog did not see its shadow here in St. Andrews on this February 2nd. That's a good sign that the worst of winter is over. Whew!
President Sarkozy visits a steel factory. To the boss's surprise, the president greets an employee, Morton, with a warm hug. The same thing happens when Barack Obama visits, and again during Vladimir Putin's tour.
Unimpressed, the boss says to Morton, "I bet you don't know the pope."
Morton shrugs. "We play gold together."
The gauntlet has been tossed, and the boss pays their way to the Vatican. During the Benediction, Morton slips away. Sure enough, he reappears-side by side with the pope.
Two Chinese tourists tap the boss on the shoulder and ask, "Who's the guy in white standing with Morton?"
Have a great day
Ed
Ciao Edward!
Besides having a great day yesterday, David and I got a good laugh at your joke about Morton. Thanks for another touch of humor on Ed's Edition.

Dave has just headed into town to see if he can find me the Italian version. That way, if nothing else, I should be able to read Italian when I grow up.
Here in St. Andrews, it's a clear, sunny day. I'm hoping that the night sky is star-studded and moon-lit when I step outside to raise a February 9th toast in remembrance of Dad.

Hi, Edward,
