Baaaa...from Ottawa. It is very mild here and melting all over the place. We hope the snow disappears before it freezes again. Thanks for the new thread, Ed.

kbub said...

Generally crappy weather here. Temperatures well below normal, rain above normal. Not good enough to be a lamb or bad enough to be a lion. Maybe a rat. It's small but it makes you cringe and can carry disease.

Louise and David said...

Today it is cold but sunny on the east coast of Scotland. On March 1st we said an eager good bye to the coldest February on record since 1962. Kelly, Len and Amy can vouch for the strong winds and biting rain that dominated the last three days of their stay in St. Andrews. Yesterday Kelly made a facebook comment that the weather is a lot warmer in Toulouse than it was here in Scotland.

Surely things can only get better from here on in.

Here's a little exercise for the brain...

The Equality Steamship Company is famous for the unfailing punctuality of its sailings.Every day at noon, Greenwich time, one of its liners leaves Southampton for New York and exactly at the same hour, also Greenwich time, another boat sails from New York to Southampton. The crossing, in either direction, takes seven days. Thus, whenever an equality ship departs either from New York or from Southampton, another ship of the same line is just docking there, having arrived from the other direction. The eastbound and westbound liners ply the same course. If we board such a vessel at Southampton, how many Equality ships do we meet during our voyage to New york?

kbub said...

Fourteen?

Louise and David said...

I calculate 14 too. Is there a trick to this one, Ed? I wonder why I always suspect a trick when you post an "exercise for the brain".

BJ said...

If you include the ship that is docking when you leave, the answer could be 15.

ed said...

How does she do it? Betty Jo has come up with the correct answer. Each day there are two ships in each harbour and six coming and going on the sea, for a total of sixteen ships, you pass all but your own.

BJ said...

Sheer guess work! And it only took me two days. I figured Kenneth and Lucy must be pretty close,so I thought about it for a while and then thought of the boat docking. These kinds of puzzles are usually so incomprehensible to me that I don't even understand the question, never mind the answer.

Louise and David said...

I still don't get it, Ed. How is it that the boat I am on meets the other 6 that going in the same direction as I am travelling, one day apart? Meeting Dave's 8 still makes sense to me.
Louise

kbub said...

Louise, when a ship ahead of you reaches the destination another one leaves. Right after you leave Southampton there are 7 ships already en route toward you. During the 7-day voyage another 7 leave NY.

My problem was that I couldn't find any clue in the original text to suggest that we should or shouldn't count the ships at the endpoints, so I split the difference. Do they count as ships we "meet during our voyage"? I guess they do.

Louise and David said...

Thanks for the explanation Kenneth. I had to draw myself a diagram for this one and I finally get the picture!

ed said...

Although it took me 8 days I found the easiest way to understand it is to do what I did, I learned a few things doing it as well. First of all I went to the internet and printed out a skyline for New York and Southamton then taped them to each end of the bathtub, then using a tape measure and marker I divided the tub into seven equal parts to signify the days of the week. I originally thought it would be 14 so I had 14 Pepsi bottle caps to serve as my boats. It took me two days to drink the pepsi but I didn't include that in my 8. After filling the tub I put a boat at New York and 1 at Southampton with anchors taped on so they wouldn't move, then I went to bed planning to add a boat at each end while moving the first two one day forward. I awoke to a fierce knuckle tapping my forehead and soon found I would have to alter my plans. The lecture I received taught me you can't tie up the tub for seven days, when the marker didn't come off easily the..that stuff really hit the fan. The next things I learned was that the right amount of good duct tape can plug a shower drain and a shower floor makes a shallow bathtub, the depth limited only by the height of the curb. Having set up my skylines and marked off seven tile ( I used tape this time) I began the seven day test, sure enough by the end of the seven days there were six boats going each way in the water and adding one at each dock made my total 16 and since you wouldn't meet the boat you were on the answer was 15. I would have had it in seven days if I had been smart enough to start in the shower.

Louise and David said...

Very funny, Ed. That's good for a laugh..or two..or more. I'm glad I didn't have to go to those lengths to understand the answer. Still, my modest drawing definitely cleared things up for me.
Louise (LOL)

It took me a couple tanks of gas and a long stretch of highway to figure this one out.

A truck travels 50 kph for the first half of the distance of a trip. How fast must it travel in the second half of the distance in order to average 100 kph for the total trip?

BJ said...

LAUGHING OUT LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!

BJ said...

Edward,
I think you should take up writing. Your explanation of 'how you solved the puzzle' was hilarious. And think of all your wonderful pen-names--Edweirdo comes to mind as the most appropriate for this one. If you decide to go serious, the formal Edward would be good. You could have a blast. I look forward to future offerings.

BJ said...

P.S.
I am deliberately staying away from the truck one in the hopes that you will explain it, too.

kbub said...

Ed, I'm pretty sure your truck can't go fast enough. If you want to double the distance and double the speed, you'd have to hold the time constant. Your truck would have to cover the second half in zero seconds.

Louise and David said...

150kph?

ed said...

I have to admit I received help on this one, uninvited that is. After picking up some great traffic marking paint from the shop where I now work I headed out on the highway to mark my start line, I then proceeded 50 k and marked the halfway point, 50 k later I marked the finish. That's when I realised, what a maroon, I could have just watched the odometer and done the test at that time. Oh well. I headed back to the start to begin. The truck purred along at 50 kph until I reached the halfway mark, it was working hard at 140 when I noticed the red lights behind me. Damn. I was going to have to start all over again. When he exited the cruiser I thought... that is not the size of a normal human being, advice of my father immediately came to mind... simply tell the truth. After collecting my drivers and registration he asked where the fire was. I told him about the puzzle. After belting into the cruiser with a timer in my hand we were off. The first 50 k took us and hour the second took us less..way less. His engine was screaming, so was I. He pulled over at 100 k and glanced at me, "an hour ten" I stammered. "If I can't do it, it ain't possible," he said. I agreed.

Ed, I think the train is likely to end at the sea. Probably somewhere on the outskirts of New Orleans.

ed said...

That's not the trip end I'm looking for. You might have to let J.C. help with this one.

ed said...

Don't forget, he left the station door at half past four.

Lui said...

Oh, I forgot to say that the engineer's name was Steve Goodman but he wasn't the one that blew the whistle to let everyone know the train was coming. Maybe someone else has the answer to who that was?

Lui said...

Sorry Ed, I was in the wrong era, and my apologies to Casey!!!

ed said...

That's funny. Let's see what happens.

Lui said...

So the train was headed for ??? The promised land??

ed said...

That's not where it ended.

ed said...

Oh, I understand. You have the wrong J.C.

Lui said...

I think it was headed for San Francisco but ended in Vaughan, Mississippi.

ed said...

So close.

Lui said...

OK, Ok I checked and although it did end in Vaughan, Mississippi, it was actually scheduled to go from Memphis, Tennessee to Canton, Mississippi. Right?

Lui said...

Now, in defense of my first answer, the train he was driving was the No 1 train out of Memphis and it was known as the New Orleans Special and later became the 'City of New Orleans'. How do you like them apples!!!

BJ said...

Ed,
Reno Hill? Wherever that is

Lui said...

Betty-Jo, what question are you answering?

Lui said...

Have you been searching for inner peace too!!!^%#&$#&

marty antonini said...

Ok guys that's enough, you're going to drive everyone nuts.
Lui remembered the line 'changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee' in the song '(I'm the train they call the) City of New Orleans' which was written by Steve Goodman but originally performed (blew the whistle) by Alro Guthrie.
Then Ed pointed out that he left the station door at half past four which led Lui to the song about Casey Jones sung by Johnny Cash (J.C.) in which he sang he drove the train to the promised land. Ed was quick to point out that's not where it was headed so Lui went through the lyrics which did make reference to 'Frisco. He obviously did a little more research and discovered that the real story was that Casey Jones was driving the No 1 train out of Memphis, headed for Canton, Mississippi. Unfortunately for Casey, the train crashed at Vaughan, Mississippi and he died, sending him to the promised land.
So the answer to your question Ed is Vaughan because that's where the trip ended, but the engineer was Casey Jones.
And Casey was real and the story is true!!!
How do you like them apples!!!

Okay, I can't take credit for this.
Lou is the Musical God, not me, But sometimes It's kinda fun to pretend I know something about music once in a while.

They'd probably like to get on the cover of the Rolling Stone as well.

Lui said...

You're too good Ed.
Most people don't realize the Eagles Hotel California was their interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles. I thought it would be tougher than that. What was reference to 49th?

Good job.

BJ said...

Lui,
I thought the answer to the train question was Frisco, but when Edward said no, I took another line from one of the Casey Jones lyrics which read "When he pulled up that Reno Hill..."
What's American Idol?

ed said...

I enjoyed the challenge Lou, as for the reference to the 49th... I think Don Henley was actually born in Estevan which is really close to the 49th parallel. Just kidding of course but I was thinking along a Canadaian connection at first, you know north of the 49th. You gave me an easy clue with the "flock", making it The Eagles or possibly the Byrds who were formed in Los Angeles. The lyrics from Hotel California certainly fit...Mirrors on the ceiling, pink champagne on ice...but of course what made it a sure thing was the "49th" and that's why my next entry to the blog was "They'd probably like to get on the cover of the Rolling Stone as well." Now you know.

Betty Jo...What's american Idol?...now that's funny.

Lui said...

Sorry BJ, I kind of had blinders on this time around!

Lui said...

Now this one may be a little more difficult. If you can think of something that has been in more accidents than anything else, it could lead you to recall a man who could possibly make you think of our mother. The thing I'm looking for is where he was born!

ed said...

I'll take a quick guess at San Pedro

Lui said...

Sorry, not correct.

BJ said...

If alcohol has been in more accidents than anything else, then Glasgow could be the birthplace of a man who might make us think of our mother.

ed said...

Next guess...Inglewood,California?

Lui said...

Sorry, you are both incorrect. I guess I should have said car crashes rather than the general 'accidents'. Maybe that will help.

ed said...

I new it was cars, unfortunately thats not helping. Doh!

BJ said...

Doesn't help me either!

I beg to differ Ed. On the surfin' that is. Every time you look for clues to answers you are surfin' the web!!

BJ said...

Ed, Lui gotcha there!
Waiting For The Sun by the Doors?

ed said...

Lui got me is right. I was telling Deanie, Lou's assistant's answer and she pointed out to me that I do surf. I should have known he wouldn't give me a poor answer. So I have to say...Good Answer, but sorry it's wrong.

Waiting for the Sun is also wrong, sorry. Once again another good idea though.

UN-FRIGGIN-BELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love reading and watching how your brains click along, but how do you do it??

With love and laughter,
ME

BJ said...

I think the back and forth between Lui and Ed is more fun than the correct answers. LOL

Lui said...

We pretty much do "Something" every day! The Beatles don't seem to fit though.

Lui said...

But.........
The Shangri-Las had a song called "Remember" and it was sub-titled "Walking in the Sand" so I think just maybe.......

ed said...

Lou, you know if it don't fit it ain't it, damn, sometimes when it fits it ain't it and that ain't it.

The band is in the sand.

ed said...

Mary-Ellen,

My brain doesn't actually click along, especially when dealing with Lou's puzzles, or any other for that matter. It kinda whirrs, spins, backsup, hiccsup, gets a headache or two, peers up,up,up, delves deep, deep, deep, obsesses, directs, misdirects, hums along, stutters often, zones out completely and suddenly stops...then it spits out the answer. Unfortunately it's not always the right one.

Lots of love

Here's a few definitions you might not find in the dictionary:

Kitty Hawk: a buzzard that eats cats.
Melancholic: what you get when you eat too much cantaloupe.
Gnu: what you've always known.
Intent: an "at home" when you're on a camping trip.

Later.

I'm having so much fun reading this blog.

Ed,
Your description of how your brain works when solving Lui's puzzles has left me weak with laughter. Too,too funny! My brain reads the puzzle and then goes numb!

Love,
ME xoxo

Auntie Louise and David

Thank you for the birthday greeting

You're welcome, Mia!

We hope you had a fine seventh birthday celebration.

Takin Care of Business BTO?
We get up every morning, and go to work while others are lying in the sun.

ed said...

Taking Care of Business is a respectable guess, we all certainly do that most days but it doesn't explain why we have to wait sometimes before leaving our prints in the sand.

ed said...

Mia has this great little smile when someone makes her feel special. I saw it tonight when she read Louise and David's birthday greeting and again when they acknowledged her thank you. It's a big deal when children feel they're loved. Thank you Louise and Dave.

How about Yakety Yak by the Coasters. There is lots of sand on the coast and most of us do a lot of talking each day. I'm kinda reaching

Lui said...

Or.....
I Get Around by the Beach Boys?

ed said...

Sorry I made this one so tough. It's actually better when you get it because then i know I did ok on the clues. You really have to deal with the prints in the sand. Use your thesaurus.

I'll add a clue tomorrow, if needed.

ed said...

Get ready people. There's a clue that will train your change of thought.

Ed,
I wish I could enter into the fun of getting the right answer to your clues. Unfortunately, I don't even understand the question. Like Mary Ellen, though, I love to follow the back-and-forth comments with amazement and amusement.

LOL, Louise

Lui said...

So the prints are "Impressions?" and the song is "People Get Ready" Not only did you give the name of the song but you told us that it was out of order by making your next sentence out of order.
Again I must say but in a different context - My Bad

ed said...

I know it was a tough one because of what "we do everyday" could be anything. You really had to spot the prints in the sand to get the Impressions and from there "People get Ready" would have worked as I also hinted "sometimes we had to wait", meaning for "there's a train comin" before we could cross the tracks. Oh well...great plans.

You guys are GOOD!!

Here's a puzzle just for fun:

A hunter arose early, ate breakfast, and headed south. Half a mile from camp he tripped and skinned his nose. He picked himself up cursing and continued south. Half a mile farther he spotted a bear. Drawing a bead, he pulled the trigger but the safety was on. The bear saw him and headed east at top speed. Half a mile later the hunter caught up, fired, but only wounded the beast, which limped on toward the east. The hunter followed and half a mile later caught and killed the bear. Pleased, the hunter walked the mile north back to his camp to find it had been ransacked by a second bear.
What color was the bear that tore up his camp?

ed said...

Lou,

The answer is not Tennessee Ernie Ford's, The Ballad Of Davy Crockett

:-)

Lui said...

The only way he could get to his camp by going straight back North would be if he was at the North pole so unless he was really lost the bear should be White.

ed said...

As my grandson Lui would say, "youw white"

ed said...

Here's another:

A scaled earthy design in the shade, Lorne's ballad.

Lui said...

The Cartwright father was a Canadian!! Lorne Greene's only song was "Ringo". Ringo Starr wrote a couple of songs that the Beatles recorded and "Octopus' Garden" was one of them.
Ed, I think you were feeling sorry for me after the last one!!

ed said...

That's funny. Just checking how your mind's working these days.

I'll be back.

BJ said...

You guys are REALLY GOOD!!!

ed said...

I thought I might get a bite on, "I'll be back"... Arnee and the Terminaters

Here's one;

An example of the laws of physics. It would feel better if I had a compass. Riding A Zenith

ed said...

My last clue should have read:

An example of the laws of physics. It would feel better if I at least had a room. It would feel better if I had a compass. Riding A Zenith

BJ said...

Let's Move On by Olivia Newton John

ed said...

I don't want to raz you but, sorry. I'm answering two questions asked in the song.

Good luck

BJ said...

Hey Ed,
Newton's law of physics; a lot of places to go; maybe the nearest star (zenith) Where did I go wrong?

BJ said...

Reach the Top. Madonna?

Louise and David said...

Gosh I wish I knew what you guys are talking about. Have you got another logic problem for me to spend a few days on, Ed?

LOL, Lucy

BJ said...

Here's a little diversion Ed.
What entertainment figure do you think of when you hear the classical pieces:
1. William Tell Overture?
2. Marriage of Figaro?
3. Sorcerer's Apprentice?

ed said...

That's good. Another of those answers that could possibly work. Maybe you missed the wording of the question and the capitals at the end of clues. Very important.

Oh and maybe a little adjustment to the meaning of zenith.

Try again (Tim Hortons popular phrase).

ed said...

I think of Walt's Mickey

BJ said...

No 3 is right. What about the other 2?

Lui said...

Ed, Find Your Way Back by Jefferson Starship?

ed said...

Sorry Betty Jo,

I thought it was a trick question. I'm not sure about the Marriage of Figaro but Mickey also did the William Tell in The Band Concert his first technicolor appearance. However, the Lone Ranger also used the William Tell overture. I'm working on the Marriage.

Lou,
Sorry, not quite the right meaning of zenith.
