Happy Anniversary, Shannon and Andry,

Our Book of Days says that a ninth anniversary may be celebrated with a gift of pottery. That seems a fitting symbol of the durability and beauty of a marriage that is shaped by the creativity of two people who love one another.

We wish you much happiness today and in the many years you have yet to share together. Cheers!

Congratulations and lots of love,

The Bugle arrived today, once again it reminds me of a story. Last year I started a new career getting off my knees and onto the ground. I work in the paving industry preparing and repairing pavement. I guess you could say I'm neon green at this. After a couple weeks i was wondering if i had made another mistake when all of a sudden I found a penny on the ground, I took it as a sign. It made me feel a bit better. After a few more weeks and many more wonderings, I continued to find pennies (from heaven). Each time I would tell my boss it was a sign from heaven. When I found two I would give him one. He spent his younger years in the logging camps and talks like he's sometimes still there. Later in the summer while I was doing some shovelling and he was buzzing around in the skidsteer I came across another penny, holding it up high I signaled 'penny from heaven'. He ground the skidsteer to a halt dipping the bucket and lifting the back wheels off the ground, slid his window open and yelled out. How many those f*#kin things you found this year? Pure class.

Rob, Mike and I are celebrating Tony's birthday by taking him to lunch. That reminds me of another story. When Tony and I worked together for Antonini and Sons we had a toaster oven at the shop. We used to buy these small pizza shells and load them up with ham and cheese, sometimes pineapple, sometimes pepperoni and even the odd mushroom...wait, that doesn't sound right, they were just regular mushrooms, I can't speak for Tony but I never got into that kind of stuff...back to my story, we always had lots of cheese and loads of pizza sauce, after all whats's a pizza without sauce? Cheese bread. Anyway, I remember one particular lunch. I had made my pizza and Tony was about to pull his from the oven, I was standing across the room leaning against the blueprint table. Tony took his pizza from the oven and realized it was a bit hot, I watched in awe as he bounced it from hand to hand until he began to lose control, the awe turned to "What the hell is he going to do now?" It was going to hit something before he stopped it, but it wasn't the floor, he might tell the story different and I no longer have the shirt for proof, I had to throw it away. Not only that, I had to finish my pizza half naked.

I think I'll take a bib today.

Love to all

One more story.
When I check the recesses of my mind, and I have a lot of them, after all it was my favorite period throughout my 14 years of school, except the one when I had my nose broken, or the other one when I had my nose broken, or the other one when I was hit in the head with a baseball bat, geez, maybe it wasn't my favorite period.....yeah it was. Anyway, back to my story. When I check those recesses I may recall a time or two, maybe even three, when, as a little boy, I played cowboys and first nations people. I know I never played it with my little girls, we played princessess and their knight or king. There was the one time we played dragon and dragonslayers. You know if you rip apart Calgary Stampeder and B.C. Lion pom poms (we don't mind other fans in Riderville but they shouldn't wave their pom poms) they make for realistic breath for a fire breathing dragon but you shouldn't give frightened little girls yardsticks for slaying. Oh well. In the first 8 years with Eddie, 7 with Mia and 5 with Lui there's never been a word about cowboys, so imagine my surprise when I heard "Papa, let's play cowgirl Ellie". The campfire was easy, a single push button candle did the trick, the raw marshmallows aren't quite as good as the roasted and the pretzel sticks are a little skinny but pass for hotdogs. I really like slipping under the covers for a nights sleep under the stars, I'm going to have to talk to her about the rooster though, or start wearing ear plugs. You Know, i've been driving a gravel truck for two years now, having spent almost 40 years before that doing flooring it's only natural for me to rid the house of carpet for the rich hard surfaces of tile and hardwood. Now i have to bring my knee pads out of retirement...I forgot about the gosh darn horsey.

For Remembrance Day:

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek ?
To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
'No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.'

Hello all,

Yesterday was more meaningful for me this year for a couple of reasons. First the story that Louise shared about Dad's cousin, and second, my daughter Christine is in the army reserve and worked at the service yesterday. She and her boyfriend were both dressed in uniform - my little soldier girl and boy.

I have a memory story to share as well. When the girls were little, we used to play a game where I would point to a body part and call it by its wrong name, and they would correct me. So, I would point to Christine's nose and say, 'I like your elbow', and she would say, 'That's not my elbow, that's my nose.' Then I would point to her knee and say, 'I thought this was your nose' and she would correct me again and say, 'That's not my nose, that's my knee', and so on until we both tired of the game.

Now Christine is studying Anatomy for her Nursing program. She came home the other day and asked me if I knew where the ulna was. I pointed to the right bone, but then I grabbed her little finger and said, 'I like your femur', to which she replied, 'That's not my femur, that's my phalange!' It transported us both back to those fun times when she was first learning the parts of the body. I only know the names for about four bones, so from now on she's going to have to lead the way!

Jesus! I'm not swearing, I relating this to Jesus as well. I do spend time on these quizzes, the thing is, by the time I get one answer, Betty Jo has answered six or eight of them, and ,and, if she happened to miss the one I struggled to get it will be in the list of the six or eight Louise got. Jesus, are you listening.

BJ said...

There is a carol called
"How far is it to Bethlehem". And from quite a few places in the UK, it is between 2100 and 2300 miles to Beth. Could that be it the answer to #9?

BJ said...

Sorry Ed. But I feel the same way when you and Lui get on a roll with the some of the 'words and music' quizzes we've had. You guys know them all.

Louise and David said...

Yes, BJ, I think that is a better answer for #9. I'll see what Dave has to say, too.

Louise and David said...

Hi BJ, I'm entering all our answers for the Christmas Song quiz but I have a couple of questions.

First, how does CHRISTMAS IN KILLARNEY fit clue #24?

Then, do we have an answer for #21?

Finally, is SILVER BELLS better for #17 than LO HOW A ROSE E'ER BLOOMING?

BTW...Dave is fine with HOW FAR IS IT TO BETHLEHEM?

Lucy

BJ said...

Hi Lucy,
I posted Christmas in Killarney on Nov 24, but forgot all about it until I read today's blog. I think it is probably correct.
Silver Bells is much better than Lo How a rose for #17.
So 21 is the only one we are missing.
Let's leave it for Ed to solve.

ed said...

Leave it for Ed to solve! Leave it for ed to solve! That's the dumbest thing I've heard come out of Ottawa for a long time...wait, that's where our government makes their big decisions. Ok. It's not the dumbest thing, not even close, but if you want to submit your answers before Dec 10 it may not be the brightest idea.
Although it may help me out with my diet...I have trouble eating and thinking at the same time.

I'm on it.

BJ said...

LOL!

ed said...

So, I've been scouring my computer looking for a Christmas song that would fit for #21. I came across a screen that may have given me the answer. It's Dominic the Donkey, the donkey fits the slow form of transportation, I'm not so sure about Dominic though, however, it's also called the Italian Donkey and I'm slightly Italian and slightly academic. That's all I got.
I gotta go get a burger.

BJ said...

Sounds good to me. We've got angels and shepherds and sheep and wise men and stars and reindeer and bells and trees and Santa Claus and ships and ribbons and mangers and Bethlehem, a babe and his mother, and the faithful and holly and jingle bells and snow. There's gotta be a donkey in there somewhere. Way to go, Ed!

Louise and David said...

Well Edward, my friend Margaret tells me that your donkey comment has given us the real answer to #21
LITTLE DONKEY
(slight=little, academic=don and means of access=key)

BJ, Margaret also says that #24 is AWAY IN A MANGER
(not here=away, not out=in, "to eat" in French=manger)

So we need a different answer for #20 now.

BTW...How Far is it to Bethlehem? is a good answer for #9

Lucy

Louise and David said...

How about?

20. IN A LOWLY MANGER SLEEPING

Lucy

BJ said...

I love the answer to 24. Wish I had thought of it! #20 is good too.And it looks like we have them all now. Go for it.

Louise and David said...

I discussed #20 with Margaret on the phone tonight and her answer fits the clues much better than mine. So. . .

20. SEE IN YONDER MANGER LOW

Now we are finished!

Lucy

BJ said...

Well done Margaret! I think she must be very experienced at these puzzles. What fun!

ed said...

So. I went to see a nutritionist about my diet. My 'see' food diet is actually supposed to be 'SEA' food diet. Who knew? She said it might be possible to lose weight if I adhered to a really good sea food diet. Well, she might be right, I'm having trouble finding really good sea food in Regina, I haven't eaten for 37 hours and I've lost 3 pounds...I'm feeling a bit peaked though.

Louise and David said...

I see that you may be getting desperate, Ed . . . desperately funny, anyway!

LOL, Louise

We have an answer for each of the 40 clues in the Occupations quiz. There are a few responses that fit but don't "jump out". I'm looking at #3,6,14 and 32. For which others do we need to do a rethink?

Lucy

Louise and David said...

I have alternate answers for the clues to 3,6,14 and 32:

3. GENERAL
6. LECTURER
14. WEAVER
32. GREENKEEPER

Any other ideas????
Lucy

BJ said...

I like all your alternates better. Everything else looks okay.

Louise and David said...

Good then; the quiz is ready to send in tomorrow for the Dec 6 deadline. Royal Mail is struggling to deliver things on time in the weather we've been having lately.
