I was happy to see your June 1 post, Ed. It's a shame you couldn't think of anything to say. I hope that means you came through the month of May unscathed.

Anyway, thanks for getting us started on another month of blogging and blurking on Ed's Edition.
Cheers!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, MICHELE AND BRIAN!

Congratulations on the 12th anniversary of your marriage.

Our Book of Days says that a gift of SILK or LINEN might be given on such an occasion. Both fabrics are beautiful - finely woven and durable. As such, they make lovely symbols for a happy and lasting marriage.

We hope your Sunday anniversary celebration is sunny and bright. We have chosen a Pinot Grigio from the Venezia region for our toast to your continued happiness and good health. And here's to another good year. Cheers!

Warm wishes and lots of love,
Louise and David

1. ANDREW LLOYD WEBB
7. SHIRLEY MACLAINE
8. DONNY OSMOND
10. PETER FONDA JR.
11. LIZA MINELLI
12. ZSA ZSA GABOR
23. LYNN REDGRAVE

These are the only ones I know off-hand. It would probably be easy to find them all on the internet, but it kind of seems like cheating when it is that easy. What do you think

BJ said...

Oops, that should have been Andrew Lloyd Webber.
I also remembered:
17. KYLIE MINOGUE. Is she the sister of Dannii Minogue?

BJ said...

Lucy,
Out of curiosity, I looked up the others. If you want them, I can add them, but it still seems like cheating.

Louise and David said...

Well, BJ, I have often used resources to find answers to quizzes. If we don't look them up, how will we fill in the blanks?
Go ahead...make my day! I have other quizzes to post when this one's done.

20. JACKIE COLLINS
21. CHARLIE SHEEN
23. VANESSA OR LYNN REDGRAVE
24, JOHANN STRAUSS
25. JONATHON ROSS

I also use the Internet for our quizzes, but there is usually a lot more research to do than with this one. That is why I wondered about it. BJ

Louise and David said...

Thanks, BJ. I have filled in our answer sheet. That was quick!

Funny... Margaret and I had a discussion about the difference between using other resources and using the Internet to find the answers to our quizzes. We didn't resolve anything but we did agree that the Internet seems to make things too easy for us, and for Margaret (and you) that feels a bit like "cheating". For me, the point of a quiz is to find the answers - bottom line. I wonder what others out there in blogville think?

Maybe the next quiz will be more difficult.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JACK!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAVIS!

We have already seen some terrific pictures of you on Facebook. You were trying out some new bikes and looking at the almond puff that your grandma made for your birthday celebration. It sure looks like you were having fun. Congratulations on your seventh birthday!

We hope today is a very happy one for you at home and at school. We want to add our greetings to those of your family and friends on this special day that you turn seven.

Lucy,
Could number 13 be TEACHER, "chatter" without one of the T's?

22. Could the answer be as simple as "COACH"?

No, BJ. I don't think either TEACHER or COACH fits the clues. Keep going; you're doing great.

21. PORTER (Dave got the PORT and I got the ER)

LOL,Lucy

Louise and David said...

BJ, I thought the "loses a point" in #13 had to do with a compass point - N S E or W. But then, the sound of the birds might be CHATTER (as you suggest) and the profession be HATTER with the first letter removed. What do you think?

ed said...

I can not help you with this quiz, but I will put in my two cents about the "cheating", of course now that the penny is no longer used, the two cents is worthless.
When I was younger, so much younger than today, I was told I was not allowed to use my text book for an exam. That particular summer was the first I worked for dad and one of the men asked me to mix up some grout, I had never been taught to mix up grout, but, but, the instructions were on the bag. I'm coming out of the closet...I cheated. That was huge for someone like me who couldn't remember what side of the bed I got out of in the morning. Some people would say that's not so bad except my bed was up against a wall.

Have a great day

BJ said...

Thanks Loved,

I needed that. LOL. I don't mind using the Internet for finding answers, but I like a little mystery in my puzzles, and when you can just Google "sibling of Luke Skywalker" and get the answer in so many nano seconds, it's not as much fun. I do use Google for just about everything though.

Cheers, BJ

Louise and David said...

Very funny, Ed. It's sure nice to have your input on our output. You always have a funny story to tell.

Now, as for the quiz, BJ. I have penciled in the last few answers that we have struggled to get. I also asked Margaret if she could shed any light on any of them. That was a good move.

#22 is CARPENTER. Apparently a man called Harry Carpenter was a much-loved BBC commentator on boxing.

She is going to get back to me on some of the others that may have "local" significance.

Hi Lucy,

Interesting. My next move was to ask you to speak to Margaret! I was convinced there should be a carpenter in the mix, but couldn't make him/her fit anywhere. I wonder what Margaret has to say about #39

Louise and David said...

We'll see. I asked Margaret to look at #8, 22, 31 and 39. All the rest of our answers are clearly in the clues.

I see Thomas is 50 years old today. Cheers to you and Bob - parents for half a century! That calls for another wee dram.

Love, Lucy

BJ said...

I like carpenter for #22. Margaret certainly knew about that one. I hope she is able to come up with the other 3.

Yes, Thomas made it to 50. And it was quite a journey. It calls for a wee dram. Have one on us, too.
Thanks.

You've got them all except #6, BJ. I think it's an anagram of the 14 letters since that's how many the answer calls for. It could have been Mountain Biking except there is no U in the clue. Is it some kind of baking or making? Or am I on the wrong track altogether? I have not provided a single answer to this particular quiz. I really did find the clues quite vague.

Lucy

BJ said...

I also thought it had to be an anagram, but I simply couldn't come up with one. I'll keep working on it. And I'm still not happy about back packing. #3.
Did Margaret have any answers to the other quiz?

Louise and David said...

I think Back packing is good, BJ.

No, Margaret has not figured out the answers to the last three clues on our professions quiz. Like us, she is continuing to work on them.

Lucy

Louise and David said...

BJ, I think you will like Margaret's answer for #3 better than your own: BELL RINGING.

Margaret also thinks the answer to #6 was meant to be MOUNTAIN BIKING. Perhaps one of the A's should have been a U. The clue could easily have read: Got in a mini bunk. If that's the case, that clue will be discounted in the draw for prizes. Shall we stop trying on that one?

Lucy

BJ said...

I love BELL RINGING--My answer was out of desperation and I never liked it.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, LORRAINE AND THOMAS!

You made a good choice to get married on this day of the summer solstice. It's an easy one to remember and the sun shines as long as possible today.

Congratulations! Our Book of Days suggests that a gift of SUGAR is in order on a sixth anniversary. Isn't that a nice thought? Sugar offers up so many sweet surprises in life.

Have a whole day of sunshine and surprises today. May your marriage continue to be like sugar for many years to come. Cheers!

Lots of love,
Louise and David

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MIKE!

We have been thinking of you today as news reaches us about the flooding in Alberta. It may be difficult for you to fit in a birthday celebration while coping with such wet weather conditions.

For now, we just hope that you and your family are not in any danger and that the flood waters will soon subside. Later today, we will be raising a birthday toast in your honour. May you spend this day in safety and may your birthday celebration be a warm and happy family time.

Love and best wishes,
Louise and David

Lucy,
Do you think #39 of the professions quiz could be DOCENTE? doe + cent. I know docent is usually spelled without an 'e' on the end, but some dictionaries do give docente as the feminine form of docent.
BJ

Louise and David said...

Yes, BJ, I think DOCENTE makes sense here. Margaret is still working on this quiz, too. I'll keep you posted on any results.

Canada Day is well under way here in Scotland where we are several hours ahead of Canadians - especially those who live in BC. We hope you've all had a wonderful long weekend of patriotic celebrations. We are flying the flag ourselves today. Cheers!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, THERESA!

We realize that those who know you best call you Tess. We can hardly believe that you are SIX years old today. We remember the summer that you were born because we were in Canada ourselves that year. You made that Canada Day extra-special just as you continue to do year after year.

Congratulations!

Hi Lucy,
Do you think #8 in the professions quiz could be VETERINARIAN? The word 'EVEN' is in it--V E t E ri N ian, but I can't make out any reference to the root vegetables. Other professions with 'EVEN' in them are: SCRIVENER,TAVERNER,ENGRAVER,ADVENTURER
BJ

Louise and David said...

Well, I think you are on the right track here, BJ. But somehow the reference to a list of root vegetables has to come into the answer, too.

#8 list rutabaga even = TRAVEL AGENT

I left out the last a in rutabaga in my last blog but I think it still works. This is my last word on #8 of the professions quiz!
