April 1, 2018

I have been encouraged to write a book. After a thorough examination of my abilities, I figured... not a chance. Then I considered the source of the encouragement. My older sisters. Wow! I certainly try my best not to let my sisters down, old or young. So...

                                                    PRONE
                            (The inclination toward something)
Forward

I've known Ed for as far back as my memory permits. He has been shy and rather introverted throughout his life. He likes to spend a lot of his time alone with his own thoughts. To that point, his sister Mary Ellen's husband Bob, would say he's not actually alone, but spending time with the enemy. Hmm. That would be me, and I take offence. I've been his sidekick all along, his confidant, his shadow so to speak, and I like to think I've been a pretty good guide. It's not really my fault he didn't measure up, nor his I might add, I used his dad as an example to follow, his dad was a pretty lofty target. Hey, at least it wasn't that Jesus guy. He also had sisters who helped smooth the path along the way, he got lost a few times, ok, maybe more than a few, actually, he still gets lost. He learned a kindness from his sisters that would serve to forgiveness, even toward himself. He is generous with his time and likes to live a simple life. However, a simple life is not without pitfalls.
Although the first episode is Ed's earliest memory, there was circumstantial evidence of an earlier event. It was rumoured that, while living on 15 block Retallack, Ed accidentally lit a match that started a small fire in one of the bedrooms. Ed carried the burden of guilt for many years until his mother explained to him... he was only a 13 month old baby at the time and maybe even slightly undernourished due to his baby sister needing the bulk of the nursing. She also explained, although the evidence was burned in the fire, her mother's intuition and intimate knowledge of a couple of older male siblings, who, by the way, are rumoured to have started the rumour, suggested they may have been involved. Under separate interrogation their stories were verbatim, they claimed their innocence but remain highly suspect. The following will be recollections of the author's life long experiences. The first episode takes place in the year 1957...

๐Ÿ’ŒDear Edward,
๐Ÿ“—your launching of a book of memories is long overdue.⌚ However, I must warn you that almost every story you tell will have several versions,๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™‰๐Ÿ™Š depending on the number of siblings who share a particular, long-ago moment with you.๐ŸŽญ

๐Ÿ”ฅFor example, I recall that the fire to which you refer was in the basement not in one of the bedrooms.๐Ÿš’ And I never saw Mom run that fast before or after that day in her life.๐Ÿƒ

๐Ÿ‘จKeep up the story-telling. As ever, you are bound to get lots of sibling reactions.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘

Hi Ed
I'm happy you have started your long hoped for book, and the title is the best. Perfect for an Ed tale. And by the way, it was a stroke of genius to have Walter E. Gogh pen the introduction. After all, as he says, he has been with you from the beginning, so who better? Bob will get a laugh about you being behind enemy lines.
And as Lucy predicted, I remember the fire incident a tad differently too. The basement and a red-headed fire-bug come to mind. I wasn't aware of an accomplice, but it would not surprise me. I also remember a fire engine, with Mom leaping over the hose as she raced to the house. ( on her way home from church ).
I am laughing out loud, and I eagerly await the next episode. Keep the quill moving.

Love,
ME

I find myself, without even one episode published in 'PRONE', having, already, to make a revision.
Having thanked Walter for his forward to "Prone" I found he was highly disappointed about botching the details of the fire. After talking him down off the ledge,(I had to explain to him he was going to get us both killed), he became determined to get the facts. Being armed with the real possibility of an eye witness remembering a "red headed fire bug coming to mind" he confronted the suspect. He was surprised to receive no denial at all. The red headed fire bug remembered it well. He said, "I was mad at my sisters, I was going to burn their house down." He went on to explain he rolled up a piece of newspaper, lit it with the burner on the stove and proceeded to set it to a box of Christmas wrapping papers in the basement. So there you go, not only was it not in a bedroom upstairs, there wasn't even a match involved.

Have a great day

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BETTY JO

Episode 1

Nobody Nose the Trouble I've Seen
(or didn't see coming)

The first accident, my memory allows me, was in the first grade, the school year had moved into the spring and the yard was full of the sounds of recess. I was leaning up against the south facing wall of Sacred Heart School, contemplating my first year and trying to remember at least a little of what I had learned. I was told, much later, that the grade eights were playing soft ball out on the school playground. Now. There's a contradiction of terms, I have personal experience that points to a fact that, that ball was not soft. Come on people....a nerd ball is soft. Anyway, there I was, minding my own business, when all went silent, really quiet, very dark too, black as a matter of fact. I hadn't yet learned about the force applied to an object that causes that object to take flight, nor had I learned that, knowing the speed, trajectory, and apex of a ball in flight, you could accurately predict its destination. Had I known, I may have stepped to the side a couple of feet. My little 6 year old nose turned out to be the point at which the "soft" ball would arrive at it's destination. When I came to I was actually still on my feet. When my vision cleared, the first thing I saw was a mob of children, some screaming, some crying and others just in mouth gaping awe. I turned to see what they were gawking at...all I could see was a wall, although some strands of the hair I would continue to lose over the course of my life were stuck to the bricks. This was somewhat disturbing for a little introvert like myself, it turns out the gathered mob was staring at me. Perhaps it was an early case of vanity, or just plain panic, that caused me to wipe the snot from my nose. Yeah, one of those bad decisions. My little blue jacket was now sporting a crimson streak from the elbow to wrist, compliments of the fluid flowing from, what was, my recently broken nose. Those little people in front of me started dropping like flies. That's when things went black again... oh wait, that's a nun standing in front of me. She swept me up I her arms, I felt comforted, a little less so when I heard her tell another teacher she was saving the other children from trauma. I have to give props to the other teacher though, she asked, "What about Edward?" "He'll get used to it", the nun replied, " he's one of the Antonini's".
My memory next takes me to the doorway of the cloakroom of my older brother Tony's classroom. When Tony enters the cloakroom there's another kid crawling on all fours behind him, Casey, I won't mention his last name due to privacy regulations, wanted to walk home with us. Without permission apparently. (to be continued)....

P.S. I just found out we are only allowed so many characters per post...see next post

...
I guess my head swelled quite a bit, the paper next day had reports of a big headed alien walking across the grounds of Scott Collegiate with a red head and another kid in tow. Once home, I sat on my mom's lap and waited for my dad to come chauffeur me up to the hospital.

The next shift in memory has me lying on a gurney in the Grey Nuns Hospital, I was practising my counting skills on the little holes in the ceiling tile, when my gurney started moving and I was wheeled into a room with a lot of lights. In the room there was mention of something called Ether, then they turned the lights out. That Ether business, that's really hard to forget, many dreams, or should I say, nightmares, had me frantically swimming through the stuff, and I'm not a very good swimmer.

I awoke in a totally different room. I was startled at first, I couldn't move my arms! I could not move my arms! Don't get me wrong, I could feel them, I just couldn't move them. These jokers had used medical tape to attach my wrists to the bed railings. Some lame excuse about not wanting me to touch my new nose. My dad came to visit in this room, I was happy to see him, he brought me a couple of Dinky toys. Hey! Wait a minute, that's not a good sign, I want to go home, I don't want Dinky toys. I had a little collection of four Dinky toys before I was able to go home. I hate Dinky toys.

Have a great day

๐Ÿ’ŒDear Edward,
You are such a good story-teller.๐Ÿ“ƒ✒ In this episode from your early life๐Ÿ‘ฆ, you set familiar scenes that transported me back to my own childhood๐Ÿ‘ง - to Sacred Heart School๐Ÿ“˜, the collegiate grounds๐Ÿšถ and even the dreaded hospital room๐Ÿ’‰.

This story took me through a whole range of emotions๐ŸŽญ but you provided comic relief exactly where it was needed๐Ÿ™†. The closing line is a perfect swing away from all that my little six-year-old brother was going through.๐ŸŽข

Like BJ, I'm glad you are able to inject humour into traumatic times๐Ÿ‘ and to come away with not much more than a strong aversion to dinky toys๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿš™๐Ÿš•.

This is Lui, I'm not sure how to change my computer so it says its me so I'll post from Tricia's account instead.

We were very saddened to hear that Louise suffered seizures apparently related to a benign tumor in her brain.
We pray that her treatment and recovery will be as good and swift as possible.
Louise has given us so much support over the last 20 years with her wisdom and timely comments and letters. I only hope that the prayers and thoughts we are sending to her now will give her strength to get through the difficulties she faces during her recovery period.
Family support has meant so much to us over the years and I know everyone will focus on the prayers and thoughts Louise needs at this time.

Its Lui again.

i have an update from David and he asked me to pass it on.

Louise is in ICU at Kelowna General Hospital.

At first they thought she had a massive stroke but a brain scan revealed it was a benign tumour and the Edema around it caused stroke like symptons.

When David left her he said good night and she blinked her eyes in response.

April 20 - ๐ŸŽ‚Martin Brackett(46) and ๐Ÿ‘ธSofia Cassan (5)
