Now that we have our Louise back, we can continue to enjoy her contributions to this blog.
Here's one of mine.

PRONE

Episode 2

Dรฉjร  view all over again

I had just come through a new experience. I had spent a couple of nights in the hospital, it was the first time in my life I had spent a night without other family members milling about. It was very strange. I'm not sure if I liked it or not, it would be twelve years before I had my own room. I'm not complaining, just saying.

I had only been out of the hospital a few days, I had exhausted my option of staying home or going to school. Supposedly there was a lot more for me to learn that first year. I reluctantly headed back to school. It was recess. One of the things I had learned in grade one was, not to stand against the south facing wall of the school, so. I strategically positioned myself on the back side of a telephone pole that faced the school yard. Not only did I feel safe, but brilliant as well. I remember standing in the midst of chaos, once again, contemplating my own existence, minding my own business. I don't know if any of you can remember the big red balls with the weird little lines all over them, they were about the size of a basketball, but quite a bit more lively, like a thick skinned beach ball. Picture one of those bouncing right to me. I know, sure, it's a "soft" ball, but I'm not letting it hit my new nose. I caught it in my arms, and, before I could examine the situation and discover where it came from and where it should go, it was driven from my arms by, I suspected, some kid who wanted it. Too bad the big fisted numpty* caught my nose before hitting the ball. Oh oh!  The little mob started to assemble again, these little nose pickers are starting to creep me out. Thanks to my brother Lou, he came to my rescue and ushered me into the school and handed me over to a grown up. The diagnosis wasn't good, Tony and his buddy would get to walk me home again, there would be another alien sighting, mom would hold her little boy with the big swollen head until dad came to chauffeur me up to the hospital again. There I was, standing on the front seat of the car on the way to the hospital. Deja view, except, I didn't have much of a view, my eyes were swelling shut. It was like looking through a Venetian blind, yeah, that only had two slats, and closed.

I hadn't marked a reference point on that ceiling tile so I had to start counting from the beginning, what can I say, I didn't expect to be back so soon. The gurney started moving again and I noticed a bunch of familiar looking faces, ones I had hoped to never see again. The voices were much more muted this time but I knew what they were up to, it had only been a week or so. It took four of them to hold me down and another two to get the mask on. Then they turned off the lights again.

Same room, same bed, new tape, more experience. The nurses were always smiling and pleasant, I hope that they remember me as polite, I'm pretty sure I wasn't pleasant. I knew the Dinky toys meant I wasn't going home, I would add them to my collection of hammer victims. It was even better leaving the hospital the second time.

*Numpty

Noun (pl) -ties

1. (Scot, informal) a stupid person

I like this word,  I learned it during a great visit with my sister Louise and her husband Dave at their home in St. Andrews. After an afternoon of golfing with Dave and his friends Andy and John, we ran into Andy's cousin as we were leaving the parking lot. I was sitting between the two of them as they talked to each other through the window, the thick Scottish accents were going in one ear, garbling up my brain cells, then exiting the other. I needed subtitles. Although they were very hard to understand I did surmise something about a party Andy's cousin had forgotten he was supposed to have helped his wife get ready for that very evening. I didn't have to surmise the word numpty though. He definitely used it to describe himself.

Have a great day

Hi Ed,

You mentioned a few days ago that many of us watch the blog with very little input. I am definitely one of those. I do want you to know that I enjoy your writing every month, though, and laugh and appreciate along with the rest. Seriously, I do think you could publish a successful book. Brilliant! I also think you should seriously take up art. The few fimos I have seen that you've made are truly mini-masterpieces. 'Not to mention some of the flooring that you do.

Anyway, I'm a little social media shy but finally I say, "Write, sculpt, paint - you are an Artist in the true sense of the word."

Hi Loved,
I agree with everything that Christine posted. I did almost as much crying as laughing this episode, thinking of that poor little boy. I never realized it had happened twice. Still, the 2nd chapter is a great success and it takes a very good author to leave us both laughing and crying. Can hardly wait for June 1. TAKE CARE!
Love, BJ

Congratulations!๐ŸŽ† It is already afternoon in eastern Canada so I am starting with you on this special Sunday in May.๐ŸŒ„ We hope that you and Louise are celebrating your 66th birthday with good friends and close family in the Ottawa area๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽˆ.

๐ŸธHowever you choose to mark this special occasion, we are eager to join others in wishing you the very best of birthdays - side-by-side on the open road๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿšฒ or surrounded by associates at a lively party๐ŸŽ†. Either way, David will pour himself a wee dram๐Ÿถ and I will sip on a glass of the new red wine๐Ÿท - cranberry juice.

๐Ÿ’ŒWe hope our snail-mail greetings reached you in time for us to be part of this special occasion in the Butcher household in Calgary๐Ÿก. Of course, we could not predict what might be happening for us on this Sunday๐Ÿ”ฎ, but we were way off the mark in imagining Louise out on our condo balcony๐Ÿ†, sipping wine๐Ÿท and eating Hawkins Cheezies๐Ÿ“Œ. Only in Canada๐Ÿ!

Instead, I am alone in our unit, making festive entries on the family blog site๐Ÿ“ƒ✒. David is out on the Summerland Golf Course with Mitz and Joe⛳. Before this day is finished๐ŸŒ‡, we will raise our glasses in a modified toast to your good health๐Ÿ’ช, daily happiness๐Ÿ’• and future prosperity๐Ÿ’ฐ. May the year ahead be one of the very best for you, Alan, Bjorn and Sarafina.

Dear Louise,

Those beautiful little feet help soften the news of your 49 staples! Wow! That's a lot! I guess we shouldn't be surprised (and maybe a little grateful) that a neurosurgeon's strength is not paper work. Still! Anyway, my prayer today is that your appointment will be at exactly the right time. Rock on, my wonderful, strong, creative sister!

Lots & lots of love,
(-:hristine

p.s. I am much more comfortable being a blurker, myself, but need the connection with you right now.

Mary Ellen said...

Hi Louise,
49! Wow! I'm happy all 49 are now out and your scar can start to really heal.

Too bad your doctor didn't' have any info from the neurosurgeon and hopefully that information will get sent over to her soon. Chris' comment that a neurosurgeon's strength is not paperwork rings true, but with computers now, I just assumed all that info would be sent immediately. I'm a little surprised that it is up to you to see that that info is sent. ?????

It's good to know you have a follow-up with the specialist in 5 weeks. I have marked early June on my calendar and continue blowing love and prayers westward.

You are incredible and an inspiration.

Love ya,
ME

Ooooo...I winced when I saw 49 stitches written there! I'm glad the doctor was patient and chatty as she removed the staples, but the patient had to be patient too! And that is a lot to ask. I had 17 with the kidney thing and I remember offering up the discomfort as they were removed for each one of us in the family (had to include little Luigi in there to make it work out). Anyway, you are on my mind every day all day. I am so grateful to see your happy messages decorated with your emoji again. Hope your healing goes quickly! Love you lots,
Marcia xoxo

๐Ÿ‘‹Hi from us in Peachland where we are being hit by a heat wave that is causing the mountain streams to run swiftly into Okanagan Lake๐Ÿ—ป. The water levels are rising noticeably by the hour๐ŸŒŠ but there is no flooding of low-lying properties yet.๐Ÿ™

๐ŸšถMonday saw me back in Dr. Fourie's office with a comprehensive list๐Ÿ“ƒ of information about my medications๐Ÿ’Š, questions concerning post-surgery follow-up๐Ÿ’‰ and concerns about my own personal care๐ŸŽญ. The doctor and I had a good discussion, and she complimented me on the progress I have made in so short a time⌚. No records concerning me had been sent to her office from the Kelowna General Hospital๐Ÿ“ so she took a few minutes to put in a request for my file๐Ÿ“‚. I left the office feeling heard๐Ÿ‘‚ and respected๐Ÿ‘Œ.

As you know๐Ÿ’ก, I have an appointment with Dr. Lefevre on June 12, so unless something else comes up in the meantime๐Ÿ”ฎ, I will not see Dr. Fourie again๐Ÿ‘“. I am happy with those arrangements๐Ÿ™† and am working hard to rebuild stamina๐Ÿ’ช and regain skills✏.

Hi Louise,
Thank you for this latest update. It sounds like your appointment went quite well, and the fact that the doctor is pleased with your progress is very good news. We continue sending our love and prayers for you as you work to regain your stamina and skills. You have had a major surgery, so I know it will take time for you to recover, even though I would like you 100% right now! ✈Today is the day that Marcia arrives from Victoria. In less than two hours⌚, we will be picking her up at the Kelowna Airport๐Ÿš—. The weather here in Peachland is as good as it gets๐ŸŒ„. In fact, David and I have never been here at this time of year.๐ŸŒฑ We should have left for Scotland on the 17th but I spoiled our plans๐ŸŒ. David is being very patient with this patient๐Ÿ’†.

๐Ÿ’ŒLove Louise

Congratulations!๐Ÿ‘ Your mid-week birthday is off to a glorious start here in Peachland.๐Ÿ‘ We hope the Regina weather is just as great for you at 38.๐Ÿ‘

✈Marcia arrived here yesterday as planned so now there will be three of us to celebrate your special day๐ŸŽ‚. Actually, our cousin, Penny Rasmussen is also going to join us for lunch at Kelowna's Creekside Pub๐Ÿด where the four of us will raise a birthday toast in your honour๐Ÿป.

We want to add our best wishes๐Ÿ’Œ to those of other family members๐Ÿ’ž and close friends๐Ÿ’•. We hope your day is an especially happy one for you and Luke๐Ÿ’‘. May the year ahead bring you more good health๐Ÿ’† and prosperity๐Ÿ’‡. Here's to many joyful returns of this day in your life.๐Ÿ”ฎ

๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ‚HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANN-MARIE!๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽ

๐ŸŽถWe used to chant a rhyme that goes like this: "The twenty-fourth of May is the Queen's birthday๐Ÿ‘‘; if we don't get a holiday, we'll all run away๐Ÿƒ." Well, you are not the queen and Thursday is never going to be a holiday, but we can pretend๐Ÿ”ฎ. Those of us who love you are already in party mode๐Ÿ’ƒ and we have declared you queen for the day๐Ÿ‘ธ.

๐Ÿ’ปYou will probably have to put in a full day's work before you can enjoy a proper birthday celebration with your family๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ™Œ. However, we hope the day itself is filled with warm greetings from friends and family at every turn๐Ÿ’ž.

Turning forty-nine is particularly fine๐ŸŽ‚. May the year ahead move you happily and healthily towards the half-century mark๐ŸŽญ. Enjoy the ride๐ŸŽข!

Hi Louise,
I will alert Ann-Marie to your post and your delightful greetings for her. You have such a knack at sending words of love and best wishes. You are way better at it than the birthday card creators! Thank you.

I hope you are having a wonderful time with Marcia and that you are feeling better and stronger every day. You sure sound fantastic on the blog, and it's easy to forget you have just recently had major surgery and have not yet had your 6 week check-up. Damn you're good!

Sending lots of love and healing thoughts,
ME

Thanks Mary Ellen!๐Ÿ‘ Marcia is exactly the kind of medicine I needed at this point in my recovery๐Ÿ‘ฑ. I am doing better than I ever could have hoped๐Ÿ”ฎ. I think that has to do with all the love and support I have from family and friends๐Ÿ’ž.

Love you too,
Louise❤
