Episode 3

It's a hat trick

After two consecutive visits to the hospital, I was once again given the option to stay home from school. Mom was a bit reluctant to send me back right away, she would keep me home for a few days. I understand now, after being a parent myself, that you can't protect your children from every thing. I can still remember dad's voice. He'd always say, "Hey, you guys, quit horsing around." We never did though, quit "horsing around" that is. Staying home from school all day gave this little horse a bunch of energy to blow off by the time my brothers got home.

There was a little bedroom, to the left, at the top of the stairs on 1140 Garnet, it had a thin spooky closet that ran adjacent to the bathtub wall, there was a window on the north wall, with wispy curtains hanging from it, in the next episode you'll learn the truth about their disappearance. There was a dresser against the bathroom wall and a bed along the wall that separated this room from mom and dad's bedroom. I can't remember if it was Tony or Lui I was "horsing around" with, and I can't recall if the bed was a trampoline or a football field. Tony and Lui were my heroes growing up. I figured they were so smart, they had placed pillows on the floor in anticipation of a fall from the bed. The plan had worked great, the pillows had cushioned a number of falls and each time we would pat ourselves on the back for the genius of it. Then, I suppose I could say, I was bucked off the horse I was horsing around on. Should have listened to my dad, or that Mr. Burns guy, he said something about the "best laid plans of mice and men", ( there always has to be some brainiac who states something just to have some poor sucker prove the point), the "Gang aft a-gley" part is my face hitting the dresser before it hit the pillows. Maybe if he hadn't written it to a mouse. Any way, I broke my new nose, again, time to get another one. Poor mom, she held her little boy with the swollen head while we waited for the limousine.

I sat in the back on the way to the hospital, I was hoping to squeeze under the front seat so they couldn't find me, as small as I was I could only get my legs under.

The admitting staff were prepared when I was admitted. They taped my hands together when they were putting my identification bracelet on. They were full of themselves with pride, not so much when they realized they should have thought about taping my ankles. It took them 15 minutes to catch me, would have been longer, I ran out of breath...I couldn't breathe through my nose. They had me surrounded. My attempted escape had caused my eyes to swell again, I could barely see. I started torpedo punching and kicking air, I was tiring when I heard pop...pop...pop,pop. My assailants were wearing bubble wrap... very clever. After struggling to get me on the gurney, they duct taped my whole body down. I don't really blame them, they wouldn't have had enough staff to get the mask on me this time. I never did get the final count, but there were well over a hundred holes in that ceiling tile. My gurney was on the move again. From the looks on the faces of the surgery team, they were quite pleased I was immobilized. Even then, they approached me with caution, and...the lights went out.

It had  been over a period of only six weeks that I made those three hospital visits, dad started thinking about getting me one of those cones the dogs wear, it might have been cheaper than the Dinky toys.

Dear Loved,
You get funnier and funnier. The punch line killed me. I'm still laughing. Don't ever quit writing. I have to admit, though, there's still a little bit of me that aches when I think of that little guy's nose.

๐Ÿ‘‹Hi again, Edward,
The first thing I did on this June First morning was check the blog for your monthly posting.๐Ÿ“ƒ I was not disappointed!๐Ÿ‘ The title alone⚾ hinted at what was to come after your first two nose-shattering accidents.๐Ÿ‘ƒ

๐Ÿ“—You have an unmatched ability to create vivid pictures through descriptive writing.✒ I can hear Dad warning us to stop "horsing around"๐Ÿด; (he used that expression with his daughters, too)๐Ÿ‘ฑ. Then I can see the upstairs layout of our family home๐Ÿก and the make-belief trampolines in our bedrooms๐Ÿจ. Since I had made at least two childhood visits to the hospital myself๐Ÿฅ, I can recall the view of the ceilings from my prone position on a moving gurney๐Ÿšถ. The thought of the ether mask putting out the lights๐Ÿ’ก still frightens me.๐Ÿ™ˆ

Though your situation is serious๐Ÿ™Ž, you make me laugh because of the way you inject humour into the telling of your story๐ŸŽญ. I agree with BJ that the closing line is priceless.๐Ÿ’ฐ Watch out, you may well be setting yourself up for a traffic jam of dinky toys.๐Ÿš’๐Ÿš•๐Ÿšƒ๐ŸšŒ

๐Ÿ“…By the way, it will be hard to wait another whole month to find out what really happened to those curtains on the bedroom window.๐Ÿ“ฐ

๐Ÿ’ŒLove you lots,
Louise

Dear Loved,
I am alternating between laughing and crying. It is such a painful story but told in such a funny manner that my emotions are flipping back and forth. I can hardly stand the thought of that poor little boy in pain, and yet I'm laughing out loud at your descriptions. Man!
Memories of 1140 came rushing back and I can see the upstairs rooms as clear as can be. Memory is an amazing thing.
That jumping off the bed must be something we all tried. I can remember the bed in the girls' room at the beach was great for jumping from the metal headboard onto the mattress. I also remember the day the bed collapsed from us doing just that!

Keep on writing. You have an audience anticipating your next chapter.

Damn you're good.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DENNIS!

Congratulations! You're 68 and looking great. As you probably already know, our greetings are being sent from St. Andrews in Scotland. It is a cool, overcast day here in contrast to the warm sunny weather we were enjoying in Peachland earlier this week.

In fact let's make this a weekend of celebration in your honour. Cheers!

Louise, it's funny you should mention the triple header that was Sunday June 17 in our family. I was wondering this morning how many times it happened in mom and dad's time together so I did a little excel spreadsheet and discovered that between June 17, 1938 and Feb 9, 1995 it happened eight (8)times. When I think back it seems it was more often than that but the calendar does not lie.
Just a little bit of meaningless trivia to keep me occupied!!!

Lui

Mary Ellen said...

Thanks Lui,
Your calculations bring back memories of me often sending 3 separate cards to Regina on Father's Day. Birthday, Anniversary and Father's Day. So according to your calculations I did that 8 times, although as you say, it seems like it was more than that. Love the trivia!

Happy Father's Day to all my brothers, brothers-in-law, and all the other fathers in the family tree.

HAPPY 14TH BIRTHDAY, DEHLIA!

We are sorry that we got your age wrong in your birthday greeting earlier today. In our recent travels, I tucked my copy of Bob Barker's fantastic family calendar into a case with my personal computer and then left the case behind in Peachland. Bob was kind enough to email us a replacement copy and we spotted our error right away.

It is still your lucky day, though, and now you are 14 years old. Congratulations!

We are off to Tricia's celebration tonight. I have already seen some who are coming from out-of-town: Len & Kelly, Rob & Bonnie, Vic, Mike & Penny from our family, and family members from Marie's side. And there are many others attending....... friends and family. Tricia draws quite a crowd! We know you will be there in spirit tonight with everyone, especially Tricia. She is a celebration of life.

Love,
ME

So sorry it took me so long. It's Saturday morning and it's the first time I've looked at the blog, we've been so busy with Tricia's event and visiting with out of town guests.
I went back to my spreadsheet and decided I would expand it from 1900 to 2020 so if any other question arose I wouldn't have to go back and rebuild it each time. I discovered something I did not know before, or forgot that I knew (which may be the case since I turn 70 this year!)
The year 1900 was not a leap year so it did not have a Feb 29 and Excel( at least the version I have) is not programmed correctly because it added Feb 29 for 1900.
Going back to that fact, I had to find out why and discovered that a leap year is one that is divisible by four AND, if it is divisible by 100 it must also be divisible by 400!!
So I adjusted my spreadsheet to eliminate the Feb 29, 1900 error and came up with 12 years from 1939 to 2018 where April 16 fell on a Sunday.
I then checked the first year, which was 1939 and then searched Easter Sunday 1939 to see if it was on April 16. I discovered that there was no point to my spreadsheet. The Internet gave me over 400 years of Easter Sunday dates arranged in an very friendly chart that encompassed both the Western Easter Sunday dates and the Orthodox Easter Sunday dates (which are based on the original Julian Calendar converted to the Orthodox Calendar dates.)
Anyway there were three years on which Western Easter Sunday fell on April 16. They were 1995, 2006 and 2017. Interestingly enough, Orthodox Easter Sunday only fell on April 16 twice during that period - 1944 and 2017!!
Now I'm really tired, I think I'll go back to bed!

๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผ‍๐Ÿ’ปWhoa, Lui
No wonder you are tired.๐Ÿ›Œ You took the long way around to answer BJ’s question about her Easter birthday๐Ÿ‡- apparently just three of them in her lifetime.๐ŸŽฒ May she go on to celebrate number 4, whenever that may be. ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿ’ŒLove, Lucy
