This is a continuation of the family blog.
Unfortunately, the solution to archiving comments is not as straightforward as I had hoped. It would involve hacking code and since I'm just not up to snuff on that anymore, it's going to have to be a less elegant solution.
Comments are inseparably linked to their original posts, so I created this new post. You can still access any comments you missed from the original post by clicking on it in the archive to the right of this post.
Each week, I'll create a new post. This should help with the blogging down problem I, and apparently others, have experienced.
Sorry Melissa, it's going to create a little bit of addition work, but I'm sure someone with your inestimable talent with numbers won't have any difficulty.
Thomas (masquerading as Ed).

Mike .... your "amazing to zensational" is a very clever description of Mom's alphabet prayer of thanks. I like that.
Tricia ....I second Mike's request for a play-by-play of Marty's quick draw at the Calgary Stampede. By the way, Cupar here in Scotland is pronounced Coo-per; I quickly learned to stop calling it Q-par. I also didn't know about Marie's childhood connection to Cupar in Saskatchewan. I love the blog bits that are accumulating on Ed's Edition. We might even have enough info to create a family version of trivial pursuit.
BJ ....it's good to hear that the family tree is coming to life with pictures. I recall Ed's long-ago blog comment that photos were making Bob's family tree look like the beautiful one that blossoms in Mary-Ellen's front yard. Now, there's a challenge, bloggers! Right, Mary-Ellen?
Ed ....I have decided to take your math problem and Vic's unsolved POW's on the plane with me. I've got a feeling that the 8-hour flight will seem too short as I struggle to find the answers.
LOL, Lucy (#1778)
BJ ...do you have a list of the unsolved POW's? I must have put mine in a safe place but I have forgotten where that is!
Lucy (#1779)
Lucy,
I misplaced my list, too. But here are the ones I think have NOT been answered:
A jarring day;
Gorgeous chick;
Sensible royalty.
I finally solved Huge Husk; after 4 or 5 incorrect answers, Vic gave me one more clue which led me to Podzilla, for Godzilla and she informed me over the phone that answer was correct. I still haven't a clue about the above 3. For pete's sake (and mine) try to get them. They are driving me crazy (or should that be crazier!)
Love, BJ
#1780
Thanks BJ,
Judging from my track record on these POW's, three will give me plenty of work en route to Calgary.
I have discovered that the person who sets up a quiz, riddle, puzzle, POW, truly believes that the clues are too easy. That's because he or she knows the answer. However, from the solver's perspective, there are just so many possibilities to consider. Our multiple answers to Vic's plays-on-words are proof positive of that.
Love, Lucy (#1781)
Well it was a wonderful night at Stampede. I can't give you a play-by-play of Marty doing the quick draw, as I can't stand to "hover" while someone paints! He only has 45 minutes and many people watching, and while he seems to chat easily with people while painting, it makes me stressed...he did an amazing job of half of a horse's face, close up, and the moon in the sky in the background. In the eye of the horse, the reflection of the skyline that the horse was looking at could be seen. Quite amazing. It received a winning bid of $1800 - which was one of the top two bids of all of the quick draws. His featured piece in the main auction, a detailed pencil drawing of an owl perched high up in a birch tree, went for $2050. Pretty sweet!
While I loved many of the items auctioned, I managed to spend only $10 at the Stampede - $5 for a jumbo lemonade and $5 for a try at the Whack-A-Mole (can you believe it's now $5 a shot?).

Lucy here,
Happy Friday the 13th! Whether or not you suffer from triskadecaphobia, you can't help but notice that I am flying back to Canada on this date. I keep reminding myself that it's Marcia's lucky number.
Tricia ...thank you for your stampede summary. It sounds like Marty came through on top as he always does. What a guy!
I am signing off on the blog here in St. Andrews. With any luck, I'll be back with you soon after my arrival in Regina. Between Holly's offer of computer time and Mike's efforts to locate a lap top, I shouldn't miss a beat on the blog.
Keep on blogging!
Lots of love, Lucy (#1783)
Let me tell you a story about Marty's focus.
When I was building my house in Lumsden he came out to give me a hand one day. He had been at the Bufallo days Ex the night before and one of the gamers was making jokes at him as he tried to climb a rope ladder to ring a bell for the prize. It had bothered him quite a bit so we built a makeshift rope ladder at my house and he practiced until he could do it. That night he went back to the Ex and although there were very few who could actually get a whack at the bell when reaching the top, Marty steadied himself and played a little tune on it. I think they quickly banned him from the game.
Just get him focused on something and stand back.
Congratulations on your sucess at the Stampede Marty.
Lucy is on her way I have to shine up her taxi.
Tricia, last time I went to the ex, Mike and I went to the horse races, his betting made us $45 each the first two races. At the end of the 8 races I had $5 in my pocket, just enough for a hot dog and coke.
1784
Triskadecaphobia, now there's a word you don't see everyday.
I'm sure everyone, if they didn't know it already, figured out from their inherent knowledge of latin combined with the context, that it means fear of Friday the 13th. The literal translation, however, is superstition about the number 13, which would also apply to it being someone's (specifically Marcia's) lucky number.
It's also a very long word. My favourite very long word has always been floccinaucinilipilification - the meaning of which many people might apply to this posting (or even the word itself).
I like slipping it into a conversation every now and again (of course, only when appropriate as in: I'm sorry counciller, I have to floccinaucinihilipilificate that contention."
Floccinaucinilipilification is, in fact, a legitimate English word, one letter longer than antidisestablishmentarianism.
I challenge anyone to come up with a longer one... and use it in a sentence.
As long as we're playing with words, there are very few in any language that end in 'gry'. Two are: Angry and Hungry. What is the third word in the English language?
Trish thanks for the Stampede update. Speed painting sounds like fun to watch, but it doesn't sound very relaxing to do. I'm glad Marty is pulling down some good cash for it, though.

I should clarify - Marty did not take home the $1800 for his quick draw...that goes to an art scholarship fund. Talented and generous!
Thomas - I know your third word..."language". That is the third word in "the English language". Yeah! I got a riddle finally!
First - couldn't blog yesterday - EATING again.
Second - Well, my evil plan did not work. What happened to the good ol' days when the City would dig up your front lawn to fix your sewer and just destroy your lawn??
They came yesterday, fixed it. Left a little square of fill on my lawn and voila it's done.
i think they removed the only part of my lawn that was actually healthly - on to a new plan! My mom and dad think i should xeroscape it. But I don't want rocks in my front yard....through my windows....all over the driveway... no - need a new plan. Maybe build a bit of a deck or something. Plant some stuff that doesn't need to be watered much... My dad did a great program in excel when they redid their back yard, maybe i will put this in his able hands!! (just won't tell mom)
Marty - love the drawing of the owl on the tree! I found it on the stampede website.
Ed - you ready for some golf?? I have been practicing all week.... I have been hiding golf balls in the trees and tall grass and then practice looking for them. I'm ready.
Later!
no idea what post this is. too lazy to look.
Sonia
ok, i felt bad.
this is #1792. Who is going to grab the #1800 spot? my guess is mike
...what time is it?....
Hey Guys
You guys must have me mistaken for somebody else. I wasn't at any quick draw last night. I told you, I'm a full time blogger now. The only reason I haven't been writing a lot is because I can't read that fast.
Marty
Hello again
It was so nice to see Lou, Marie and Tricia at the Art Show last night. Thanks for coming guys. I love it when family is there to support me. I hope you had fun.
BJ and Mary Ellen and Lou were also at my QD a few years ago
and that was a blessing too.
Thanks Sonia, I love your lawn story. Hey! I bought a house with a full deck in the back yard. I wonder why... You might be an Antonini if... ha ha ha.
Eddie... YOU built that ladder by yourself and it was so damned hard to get up it, by the time I got to the exhibition I almost didn't have to use my hands to get up their ladder. Thanks pal.
Okay, this song is for all of you..... You are the wind beneath my wings....
Sorry about that, it's the wedding singer in me I guess.
Love,
Marty
P.S.
WECOME BACK LUCE!!!!!!!!!
Dear Blogees
This will confirm that;
"LUCY IS IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS"
Departed Glasgow 3.11 pm.
Via Globespan.
ETA Calgary 3.36 pm.
Wow... thats fast flying with time.
With a tail wind she could be earlier.
Cheers Dave
Hey Thomas
I love your A to Z man. Coooool!
Hey Mike
I love ya like a brother.
#1797
Welcome Dave!
Marty #1798
Marty,
Congratulations on your artistic success. I remember the thrill of being at the auction a few years ago and seeing your quick draw. I wish I could have been there last night.
David,
I love your Lucy is in the sky with diamonds comment. We are all looking forward to seeing both you ahd her at the reunion.
Sonia,
Have you ever considered moving into an apartment?
Tricia,
Glad you like the tree pictures and thanks for reminding others to send some.
Love BJ
#1798
I'm claiming 1800 for Melissa.
No, I wouldn't want to live in an apartment - the kids need a nice lawn to play on!! The people across the street have one.... or do for now - it's starting wear abit like mine!
#1801
welcome dave, are you going to be a regular visitor now?
back at ya marty
love mike
i forgot - 1802
Hey BJ
Could you let me know if you got the picture of my family in your email... We had to borrow the little guy. The one we got is
6 foot 2.
... so he couldn't fit in the picture.
Sonia,
I'm almost ready for golf I,have to find my set of clubs, I know they're around here somewhere, I'm sure I used them four years ago at a brothers reunion.
Tricia,
You saved me on Thomas's trick question, I was going to start searching the dictionary, although with my typing there are a number of words that end in gry, such as the color gry, my brother in law Gargry and your own city Calgry.
David,
Lucy's taxi is on stand by. Yikes! Seeing that her plan flies from Glasgow to Calgry in 25 minutes maybe I should start for the airport.
1805

Hey,
Wouldn't it be easier if we go back to the original blog, get that number up to 1400 and then come back here. What do you think.
1806
yes ed I agree...if we get the other post up to 1400 even then we will only have to add the number to know what post we're on and not have to log it, which is risky because that requires manual adding and tracking and human error is quite possible :). The only trick will be to STOP when the counter says 1400 comments! I think we can do it, maybe even today. I second your motion.
I'm taking up your challenge Thom. as Tricia has agreed I'm posting it on the old thread.
1808
i agree...
#1809
Marty,
I got your email and Bob has done his thing. Please check your email for the result and let us know if it is okay with you guys.
Love, BJ
Marty,
I just looked at your art auction piece. All I can say is WOW!!!!!!

War of 1812...USA fails to capture Canada...but British army not so lucky...Off to bed....Lucy's Globspan aircraft is on approach to Calgary
Cheers/D
David,
Thanks for keeping us up to date on Lucy's progress. It feels like she is with us in spite of being in transit.
BJ
1813
Ah, we're back to this post now. See how far off we were in counting? Now we can just add 1400 to whatever the computer count is. Technology - love it.
1838
Except I can't add. That was 1839 and this is 1840. AAAHHHGGG!
For those of you who actually notice things, you will now take note the first thread of the blog is at 1400 comments making it a bit easier to figure where we stand on the numbers in total. this now becomes 1839 which might surprise some people, seeing as Betty Jo's entry is numbered 1813.
1839
Oops!
This is easier?
1842
LAUGHING OUT LOUD!!!
BJ
I have another plan, (oh no!) I hear some of you saying.
I'm going to post a new thread when this one reaches 600, that way we'll be at 2000 and that will make it even easier to know where we are. Thomas will be happy because he won't have to wait those extra 57 seconds for his download. Hey!... Hey! I just discovered something great! You know when you make a mistake and you don't notice right away so you have to back space a sentence or two and start over. All you have to do is use your arrows to move back to your mistake and correct it without starting over. Whoa!...This is going to save me a pile of time.;)
1844
Hey BJ
Did Bob get my new photos?
Marty
Oh BJ
Thanks for the nice compliment. I still have to come to your back yard and paint a bunch of those birds.
Um...#1382..no...#73920...no..
#1846...whew..
way to go everybody!! this makes it easier....
could that answer to the mumbled jumble (is that what they are called?) be
lemonade and NICE cookies....
love those cookies!
ah....let's see 1400+446 and then add this post equals....
#1847
Does anyone know if Louise has a ride at the Calgary airport? My dad just called and was trying to figure out which flight was hers. I didn't realize she was flying in to Calgary - not paying enough attention!
Also - I probably missed the very beginning of numbering comments, but do we need to now? Since the computer keeps track of this one and we know the other comments are at 1400, can't we figure it out at any moment if we want to, rather than have to list it on every comment? I probably missed the boat on this one, so sorry if I did!
LOL by thw way that was 1848 and this is 1849!
You know, I'm almost sorry I ever said anything.
On the other hand, I love Ed's plan to switch over to a new thread at 2,000, I'm really getting blogged down again.
Maniago! I can never remember the name of that town.
Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago, Maniago
Okay, I'm going to go type it out 110 more times.
Yes Sonia...Lemonade and Nice cookies were something I could count on, about 5 minutes after arriving to great-grandma and great-grandpa's apartment. I recall one visit that mom and great-grandma got chatting right away and then suddenly out of the kitchen came great-grandpa, cane and all, shakily balancing a tray of Nice cookies and lemonade, saying "Emily, you forgot the cookies. We all had our mouths open!
1850
or 1851 that was - hello Thomas! this is 1852
Okay, all is well - my Dad just phoned again and Louise is in the car with him! Her next flight is later tonight and the kids are just finishing work and picking up Bjorn, so she's coming for a quick visit!
1853
Marty,
Killing myself laughing. I just forwarded your pics to Bob. He will get on them right away.
Tricia,
I'm with you. We don't have to number our blogs at all. Just add 1400 to the number at the top of this thread and everyone will know how many. I thought that was the whole idea.
Ed,
Still LAUGHING OUT LOUD, with lots of love,
BJ
You folks are far too clever. Tricia got language as the third word in 'the English language' practically before it was posted.
And Ed correctly points out that pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is, in fact, the longest word currently listed in the Oxford English Dictionary (which supposedly is some kind of authority).
Here's another. I challenge someone to come up with a blog-related pangram (Ed should know what that is considering his mission to learn how to type.)
Gee whiz Thomas, I just came up with a brilliant, extra visionary idea for bloggers to identify entry numbers quickly.
Now you're throwing out another challenge.
I'll have no part of it.
Wanna see something cool?
http://www.google.ca/maps?q=Maniago+(Friuli-Venezia+Giulia),+Italy&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title
That's it Thom, you have to zoom in pretty close before Via Giuseppe Antonini shows up.
Hi all! Well as I my previous post said, we just had a wonderful visit with Louise on her lay over in Calgary while travelling from Scotland to Regina. Click on my name above and then on the link to Tricia's Tides to see some pics!
One of the cool things about the blog is that it is so big, you miss things. While Louise was here, she mentioned Ed's puzzle about Hank, Jim and Duke and their critters. Dad and I both missed that one. Needless to say we both started setting up algebra equations immediately and both got to the same answer at the same time...here it is Ed!
Hank has 11 animals, Duke has 21 animals and Jim has 7 animals. I've posted too much today, so I'll leave out all the gory equations unless anyone requests them! Good night!
Hey Thomas,
Is that pangram blog related enough?
Lucy has landed!!!
She is at the suite visiting with her mother.
The blog's loss is our gain.
Yes Tricia,
It is easy to miss things as the blog rolls outta control. I almost missed your answer which of course is correct. Accountants got the answer....go figure.
I almost got it but I ran out of toes.;)
Kick-Ass Trish. I thought I had clicked on everybody's profiles, but obviously I missed yours. I now have it bookmarked.
You've also got me going back over the blog klicking on everybody again to see what else I might have missed.
Great pic of Marty and Luce!
I wanna see those equations! Just to compare them to my own, of course... :-)
To be truthful, it was always the algebra that got me. I could do the calculus, but then plugging 2+3 into x+y was my achilles heal.
Ed, yes, your pangram is complete and thoroughly blog-related. I'm sure we can do better than 95 letters, however.
The most commonly known pangram is 35 letters and everyone who has ever taken typing lessons knows it:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
At 35 letters it is genius in its simolicity. It uses only very common words that could be found in a children's book and makes perfect sense.
Oxford lists the following as an example of a pangram that fits the criteria at only 28 letters:
Brick quiz whangs jumpy veldt fox.
Each of these words are, indeed, real words and the sentence structure is sound. However, it simply doesn't make sense.
How does a quiz about bricks deal a lashing blow to a neurotic fox that lives in the grazing areas of southern Africa?
So the next challenge is a blog-related pangram that beats Ed's 95 letters, but still makes sense.
References to the Roughriders devestating loss to B.C. will lose points.
I promise I won't get into univocalics until the we're done with pangrams (which, of course, I acknowledge may already be over because I know how you people hate puzzles).
My pangram:
We expect fun, jokes, laughs, zany relatives but, mind you, no quiet!
Love, BJ
P.S.
One of my favorite pangrams is: "The wicked peon quivered, then gazed balefully at the judges who examined him" which is found in the book Ella Minnow Pea (say that quickly) by Mark Dunn. This is "A quirky novel with pages of zany, jumbled lexicon."
The first is by an anonymous typesetter, the second by the author himself.
BJ
Is something wrong? It's been over 12 hours since a posting? Am I just not getting updates?
Tricia,
I think everyone must be away. And any time Lucy leaves the blog we all seem to get blogged down. Mary-Ellen will be back in Calgary sometime today, Marcia, Chris and Therese should be back from San Antonio, Vic is on an Alaskan cruise, Ed & Dean are away for the weekend, and the last time I checked, Thomas was on his couch watching sports. All will return!! (we hope).
Love, BJ
...and Marty is still at the Stampede...
Sorry Marty,
...and Marty is still at the stampede, and doing very successfully there.
Love BJ
Sorry BJ
I musta still bin sleeping when I wrote that because...How can I be at the Stampede when i'm writing in the blog?...I think maybe I'm still sleeping.
....what time is it?...
diane and i just visited lucy and mom, and moms doing very good, although very tired. bob and mary ellen stopped in , bob flew to regina to pick up mary ellen and drive her back home because she could'nt do it with one eye, she was very happy to see him with that one eye.
we're working on getting lucy a laptop, and holly said she could use her computor, so lucy should be back very soon.
love mike
Hi y'all............
...........back from Texas,
Marcia
Marcia, don't you mean "all y'all"? Since you're speaking to multiple y'alls, you need to use the plural. Didn't they teach you any grammar while you were down there?
Did you hook up with my bro?
Hip jabs and very quick wit maximize blog fun.

Speaking of the Stampede, how come I haven't seen any TV coverage? Love those wagon races!
Hey Thomas
I'm sorry to say but the Stampede doesn't have wagon races any more. They don't have any rodeos either. Everyone is in the new casino. Now it's the biggest indoor show on earth.
Love,
Uncle Marty
Marty, sigh, it's not surprising.
Hey Thomas
APRIL FOOLS!!! Ha Ha HA
Just kidding...wait a minute...
what day is it?.....
Oh you... you... you, guy!
I knew, however, I won't be surprised when they do start shutting down rodeo events. It's already happening in B.C.
We're back,
Moose Jaw was great, the mineral waters at the spa were very relaxing and the golf was great fun.
In a Texas Scramble tournament of 36 teams, our team consisting of Jackie Sluz, Deanie, Sonia and I placed 2nd...from the last. We shot a blistering 7 over 78, some of you golfers out there might not agree that's a blistering round but Deanie did indeed end up with a blister on her right index finger, the 4 winning teams tied with 61s.
On Saturday evening we ate at Nitz, reportedly ( one of the fashion magazines) the most authentic Thai food restaurant in Canada, the food was excellent. The waitress told us our former GG, Adrianne ate there whenever she was in town. I didn't really think that was a good thing to mention but I didn't express it to her.
Then we went over to the Casino to try our luck. There are nickle machines you can put $20 in and play 400 games. Five minutes later we were back at the spa ready for the pool.
A really good weekend.
What happened to our Roughies Friday night? I had a fare expecting me to show up at the airport that night so luckily I forgot all about the game and missed the whole thing.
I think I'll hold off on ordering my Grey Cup tickets just yet.
I watched chuckwagon races Saturday night and I always wonder why the outriders don't finsh closer to the wagons.
Tomorrow is Monday evening, the night of the week I've set aside to visit mom. Louise is there now and I can take a copy of the latest blog entries up with me. If you would like to leave words of greetings for mom and Louise, you have until tomorrow around 6 PM to record them here.
Have a good night.
Ed, Eddie, Edweirdo and Uncle Ed or Led
P.S. Brant, Shawn, Julie where are you?
Okay, we're coming up on 1900, at this rate it will take several days to get there. Where the heck is Luce when you need her?
Glad to hear you made it to Regina successfully, Luce. Drop by Holly's computer... please.
Hahahaha... keeping the blog alive one post at a time.
Hey listen...
I just drove Sonia home and all that stuff she's giving us about cutting her grass is misleading. Dead grass does not have to be cut, and let me tell you, if Sonia's grass isn't dead, they've come up with an ugly brown hybrid. But don't let her know we're on to her, she is in total denial, either that or she's color blind.
Woo hoo, a little bit of Ed action. Our fearless leader is not gone.
I knew there was something suspicious about that whole Sonia's lawn thing. A famous phrase comes to mind:
"Methinks she dost protest too much..." or something like that.
Defend thyself fair maiden!
Of course, I realize Sonia does not fit either of the primary definitions of maiden as evidenced by the family tree (i.e., husband and children.)
She may be fair, although I wouldn't know because there are no pictures in the family tree. She must be too busy not cutting her dead lawn to email my dad.
Btw, I am not just senselessly building up the posts trying to get to that magical 2,000 when I get a new lease on blog life with a new thread.

26 letters eh...
Do I win?
Here is my defense...
I still have to cut my dead grass because: and i am going to use the analogy of being almost bald...(there a few antonini uncles who can relate)
1. it's really only bare in the middle of the lawn. the outsides of the lawn do have some green blades of grass...so that part does need to be trimmed up every once in a while...
2. because the lawn is pretty much dead you have to "mow" the dead grass up and bag it still. i refuse to rake it. seriously, the last time i mowed the outskirts of the lawn i got a whole bag of dead grass...
3. there are a few long hairs in the bare patches that grow still, but i am going to just let those grow and maybe i can do a "comb over"!
4. and i have to keep picking up those crazy seeds that keep falling from the trees cause if i don't they blow into my flowers and grow all these tiny crazy little weeds...
so there.
and thanks ed for not telling everyone how badly i sucked at golf yesterday!!! oh and i am burnt too - man it was hot out there!
sonia
yeah, you win marty! that made total sense.
lots of new enties since i was on yesterday, closing in on 1900. i wonder who will get it.
I claim 1900 for Melissa.

Edward,
I think this is the solution to your sudoku:
1 9 3 6 7 2 4 5 8
8 5 2 3 4 1 7 6 9
7 6 4 5 9 8 2 3 1
--------------------
5 2 9 7 8 6 1 4 3
6 4 7 1 5 3 9 8 2
3 8 1 4 2 9 6 7 5
--------------------
4 7 8 2 1 5 3 9 6
2 3 5 9 6 4 8 1 7
9 1 6 8 3 7 5 2 4
I'll leave it for you to see if it is correct.
BJ
BJ I was sooo close to being done! I set up my little puzzle this morning and then left for a few appts...you snuck in! Well done.
Hahahahahaha... comb over... hahahahahahaha
That's funny, because I have hair
BJ
You came up with one of the solutions I did but it is not the answer given, and it is the first Sudoku I have come across with more than one answer. In their answer, in the 4th and 5th rows, where we put 9-7-8-6-1 and 7-1-5-3-9 they put 7-1-8-6-9 and 9-7-5-3-1. I wanted to post it because I thought it odd that both solutions work.
Ed,
I am amazed that there can be 2 solutions. I always assumed there was only one way of doing these puzzles. However, I never look at the answers. If it works out for me, I just assume it is okay. I will have to start checking the answers now. Does the creator of this puzzle say there can be more than one solution? I wonder which answer Tricia would have come up with? She was almost finished when I posted mine. Maybe you should ask her about it. Love, BJ
Lucy here...
Ed has offered to log onto the blog for me so I'm taking him up on his offer. Mike is still looking for a laptop and I know that Holly is willing to share her computer time. With so much encouragement, I hope to become a regular blogger again soon. I love the way you guys miss me; I miss you; too.
In the meantime, here's a Garnet Street riddle for you to consider:
IN THIS HIGH PLACE OF HIDDEN "TREASURE"
EXPLORING KIDS SPENT HOURS OF PLEASURE.
LOLOL, Lucy.
Tricia,
Have you ever come across a sudoku with two slightly different solutions. The puzzle is rated 3 out of 5 stars so it isn't real hard to solve.
Hmmm, it's nice to have Luce back, but there's something so wrong about the time zone thing.
I think you're going to have to get up at about 1 a.m. (Pacific time) and post five or six comments just to make us feel right.
:-)
Ed, BJ
I continued with my puzzle to finish it, without looking at the details of BJs solution or Eds response. Interestingly enough, I got to the point where I had to do a "if this cell is 7, then...if this cell is 8, then". In both cases, it resulted in a valid solution. I then looked at my first solution against BJs and it matched, but my second solution matched the one that Ed noted was in the solution book. Bizarre
I even looked up sudoku on wikipedia.com and it seems to indicate there should only be one unique solution. They say if you get to a "what if" scenario, and end up with 2 possible solutions, you need to go back to another pair of numbers to try the "what if" on. Given the hour, I'm not trying tonight! My question is "what if" the sukoku-generator screwed up and there isn't a unique solution...that's my answer for now. Goodnight :)
Oooooo...I used to love going up in the attic at 1140. we used to sit up there and read old comic books.
One drawback though... We had to close the closet door at night,(the attic was in the closet), because if we didn't...monsters came down and we would just make it out of the room alive when we heard them.
If you turned the light on they would stay up there all night and not bother you...Naturally, you would NEVER go up there when it started to get dark outside.
Welcome back Lucy
Tricia, Ed
I'm going back to my old method--if it works, don't fix it. In other words, if my solution works, I am definitely not checking it against the answer. I rarely check the answers in any kind of puzzle anyway, but especially not in Sudoku. Puzzle On!! By the way, how long did it take you to do the puzzle? Just curious.
Welcome back, Lucy. You can't imagine how good it feels to see another one of your riddles there.
Thomas,
Lucy can blog in whatever time zone she wants to!!
Love, BJ
thomas - you should listen to your mother
marty - i wonder if theres any old comic books up in the attic now.
reporting from van island, campbell antonini
beat out the starting q.b. from last years canadian championship vancouver island raiders, then proceeded to lead the team in there 1st game of this season to 28-5 victory. following are some of the comments in the daily news
a 66 yard march co-ordinated by new raider q.b. campbell antonini.
antonini later hit reciever calin faul with a 31 t.d strike as the raiders built a 25-0 halftime lead.
antonini outplayed the two players
- mac wynsouw and derek mann - who took the snaps at q.b. for okanagan.
the former u of r q.b. showed a lot of poise under pressure and was able to complete passes with defenders in his face.
they may be only one game into the season but mcfaul is excited about the new gunslinger in town.
he's awesome and he's got that sask. connection which always helps. said mcfaul, a native of north battleford, sask. he's got great mobility...and i think there is a lot of chemistry there with our recieving core.
now this is just a few weeks after campbell was diagnosed with diabetes - wow! talk about stepping up to the challenge, this kid is a smasher!!!
luce - i'm still working on the laptop
love mike
Hey Mike
I have to tell you a story.
I now find it easier to live my life because of my heros.
Now I have to add another hero to my list(Mom, Dad, Trish, ect...)
Campbell is my new hero.
Also, I have to add the climax to your story.
When I was hit with mortality, it took me a good year to climb back up on the rail...Campbell never fell off.
Shortly after his hit with mortality, he did what I couldn't dream of having the guts to do.
He tried out for the football team "Prairie Thunder"(aka.Regina Rams). The coach told him that he would play a receiver. Campbell told him he wanted to play QuarterBack. I'm not sure what transpired after that but Campbell decided to take a trip out to Vancouver Island.
The Vancouver Island Raiders were the Champions last year. Campbell tried out for the QuarterBack position this year and not only did he make it, he beat out the championship QB from last year.
THEN, as starting QB, they crushed the other team in his first game as Mike has told you.
Try to make a movie out of that and they'll tell you you're dreaming.
My new hero... and he's my nephew.
Marty
Bravo, Campbell. What an accomplishment. Best of luck and skill as you continue to play. I hope you are enjoying BC. It is a beautiful province.
Love,
BJ
Lucy here,
Yes, I am here in person at Holly's home with a few messages to post.
I'll start with my pangram attempt, Thom...
How many folks proved a quiz can tax job goals? (37)
I have been back in Canada five days now and already I have been introduced to more members of our ever-growing family.
In Calgary, during a delightful whirlwind stop, I met Dana, Jack and Davis. Here in Regina I had an enjoyable first encounter with Abby while she and Josh were in town. I am looking forward to meeting Kelly while I'm here, too.
I just have to say it ... "You might be an Antonini if there is always another relative for you to meet for the first time."
Lots of love, Louise
Lucy still here,
At lunch today, Mom and I had to do a lot of all-too-familiar damage control. We agreed that "You might be an Antonini if a sudden spill comes somewhere between the main course and dessert."
LOLOL Mom and Louise
(PS: Mom's laughter was good medicine for both of us.)
Wow....thanks Mike for your report. Campbell is a warrior. I am inspired and will be watching to see how the team does the rest of the season!
Despite a very insightful desposition, Lucy overlooked unusually inventive sentences employing pertinent, appropriately used letters. As late August nears, Mom eagerly listens into several suggestions about becoming joyful, openly relaxed, noticeably better - until totals complete her expected reunion.
Love...the Butcher Branch
Wouldn't you know it. Just as Lucy gets back on the blog I leave it again. Bob and I are off to Berlin tomorrow and won't be back until the 25 of July. I will certainly miss it while I am gone, but will try to catch up once I am back. I might still get one or two postings in before we leave. (time permitting).
Love, BJ
Wow, while I was posting Lucy snuck in a really clever Butcher blog, managing to get everyone in and still make a lot of sense. Well done!
BJ
Oh, yes, Mike
That attic was a fascinating place. Usually we just dug through the boxes of books, comics and interesting items but sometimes we dared to explore into the darkness by walking on rafters and dodging creepy crawlers. The attic was an open area as large as any other floor in the house.
I never slept in the bedroom below the access to the attic, so I didn't know about the monsters that came down at night time if you forgot to close the door.
When everyone else was remembering the pantry, kitchen, music room and other parts of our family home, I thought of the attic and the treasures that are surely long gone by now.
Well done, Campbell. Grandma has told me about your sporting spirit and your accomplishments.
Hi to all with no specific mention to any. I love the way you love me!
Aunt Barbara is with Mom this afternoon. I told her that I would not be gone for very long.
Hi, David in Scotland. I hope you are enjoying golf games, gardening and gracious friends. I miss you. Say hi to our neighbours from me today.
Here's another riddle for you to consider as I head back to the suite.
A PLAYFUL ARMY MARCHING BY,
CREATING MUSIC IN THE SKY!
LOLOL, Lucy
Lucy, very clever pangram and I believe it ties my attempt as least number of letters (so far).
Marty's non-sensical 26-letter notwithstanding.
Btw, the newspaper in Nanaimo (home of the aforementioned Vancouver Island Raiders) is part our chain. I am currently trying to get a photo of Campbell in action which I will post to Barking at the Big Blog.
Stay tuned.
Wouldn't it be cool to see an Antonini at the helm of our beloved Roughies some day?
Hey Lucy
Do I get a point for getting the attic riddle?
Marty
Unfortunately our sports reporter in Nanaimo didn't get any Campbell pictures last week but he assures me they will during the season and will send them to me.
can't you read marty, i got the attic riddle
love mike
looking forward to the picture of campbell, thomas, i wonder what number he is wearing.
marty, maybe you could guess the latest riddle. ha ha
trisha - you can log onto vancouver island raiders and you get there website tp read about campbell.
marty - did you guess the latest riddle yet?
mike
you can also look at this to get campbell coverage:

Hey Mike
You're just jealous cause I got the attic joke..na na na na na na
love, Marty
Hello
Hello...
simple, yet effective
Good-bye. See you in a week. Love, BJ
Hi
Hello everyone, I just got home from Lennoxville Quebec and Kelly and Amy got home from Nainaimo, they got to see Campbell play his first game. Kelly now refers to campbell as her island boy, i would be surprised if he moves back to regina. Mike; he is wearing number 18, but they have ordered him a jersey with number 19. I saw Chris, Ron, Barb, Lucy and Theresa last night at moms she's doing fine. Lucy was saying Thomas needed a place to stay, Thomas; we have room and our rates are quite reasonable call me on my cell 306-535-4111, if you get an answering machine leave your credit card number. I'm heading to the beach for the last three days of my vacation.
Len
howdy
Way to go Campbell!!!
hey len, if you are still checking the blog...
your keys are here for douglas park shack.
Hi everyone!
Thomas- I tried to sent you an email at interior but it came back to me. What email address should I use? I have some pictures that my Dad would like you to post, if you could. Thanks!
Lindsey
Lindsey, thomas.barker@interior-news.com
Thanks Thomas. On the interior website, it is listed as thom.barker@interior-news.com just in case you need to get it changed :)
Lindsey
thanks, i'd prefer not to have it changed because spammers mine web sites for emails and i currently don't get a lot of spam in that account
I wonder if Dave Butcher is still lurking or if he's off to Carnoustie for The Open?
Ok, I got permission from the photographer to post some Campbell pictures on the blog on the condition I make the contact info available.
His name is Scott Kirkpatrick scottkirkpatrick@shaw.ca.
The pix are low resolution, but higher res or photo reprints are available for a price.
Check out Barking at the Big Blog in a few minutes to view them.
Also, sounds like he'll be taking pix all season so you might want to keep tabs on:
www.scottkirkpatrickphotography.com
Go Raiders (and Riders) only one letter difference... how conveeeeeneeee-ent.
good eye on the raididers thomas.
len - campbell just dos'nt look right with # 18, they better put a rush on the new jersey.
marty - i guess i'll let you have the attic riddle, lucy, i think your last riddle is harder than you expected it would be.
linds - thks for the pics to bigbaddog - moo casa sue casa.
Thomas...Weather in Carnoustie is lousie (Lots of rain)..While the Open is on, we are playing our club's autumn prizes on the Old Course...Will watch the Open at our 19th hole...Dave
pretty quiet on the blog front this morning, ed must still be away, its nice to hear from dave again.
only 35 days to go until the reunion.
love mike
Hey Thomas
Good job on the gittin'.
Like I said: Prime minister Thomas Barker.
Hey Mike
What do you mean, "LET me have"?
Am I gonna have to take a round outta ya again when I get to Regina?
Thanks for the link to the pictures. They are awesome!
Ate at WokBox last night....yummy stuff! Love the take out boxes. It should be opening in the next few days!
Sonia
Hi eveyone!
Spoke to Campbell via Facebook and conveyed all of your congratulations and well wishes. He says thanks! and that he loves his new home.
Everyone in Calgary, Westjet is having a fantastic seat sale to Regina the weekend of the reunion. $100 bucks each way. If you are flying I would book asap. These sales dont last that long... I am flying in Wednesday night at 7:55, so if anyone else is on that flight, my Dad is our chauffeur.... hehehe.
Lindsey
"The little rain drop soldiers are marching through the sky..."
In Victoria and Carnoustie too I guess. Nice riddle Lucy.
We had a nice visit with Kelly and Amy. Lots of mini reunions going on, making the anticipation for THE reunion even greater.
Lots of love to all, Marcia
hey little brother marty, don't let fear hold ya back ya little wimp
calgarians - book your seat sale i'll be waiting for you, just say.....
taxi!!!!
marcia, good guess on lucy's latest riddle, i know the song but i forgot all about it, do you want to meet me in nanaimo for a football game in sept. or oct?
love mike
Marty, thanks for the vote of confidence, but I won't be running for P.M. (too many skeletens in the old closet). Besides it might be about the only job out there more thankless than being a newspaper reporter. :-)
Nice work, Marcia
Mom's song about the raindrop soldiers includes the drumming of their drums going rat-a-tat and their beating of their feet going pitter-pat. The song was especially soothing when heavy raindrops beat on the cabin roof. Mom made storms fun instead of fearful.
Here's another riddle to solve:
MOM'S SUITE IS FILLED WITH CREATURES SAGE;
I FOUND ENOUGH TO MATCH HER AGE.
LOL, Lucy
Yes Marty, you DO get a point for solving the attic riddle. I'm sorry. I scanned the blog and came up with the wrong information. Good eye, you, on both the riddle and my acknowledgement.
Love, Lucy
Thanks Lucy
You have no idea how traumatized I was. To figure out one of Lucy's riddles is a lot like winning "The Cup". I think I'll be okay now.
Love,
Marty
Is the answer to the newest riddle Grandma's stuffed animals?
We love going over to Great-Grandma's house - although she has a little toy box in the spare room, there are certainly enough little "creatures" to keep the kids busy! We never have to take along toys with us to occupy the kids during a visit!
For anyone who has visited Grandma and had the pleasure of hearing the stuffed Valentine dog who sings "I just called (ring ring) to say (ring ring) I love you...", I must apologize - we gave it to her!
Mike, I'd be happy to meet you in Nanaimo for the game. There's one on Sep 8 - we are planning to go. And there's one in Victoria too on Sep 1 that we will be going to as well.
It's soooo good to have Lucy back -and to know that she is with our mother.
Later, Marcia xoxo
Hello all,
I'm just checking with you one more time to see if I've missed anyone who wants to perform at the family reunion. I'm having trouble finding time to keep up with the blog, and find it easy to miss details posted there, so if someone else does want to perform, please send me an email rather than post it on the blog.
Here's what I have so far:
Holly (video of brothers' reunion)
Thomas (singing)
Marty and 5 of the sisters (singing)
Mary Emily (dancing)
If there's anything else, let me know.
You can send it to either tantonini@sasktel.net or therese.antonini@fcc-fac.ca
Thérèse
Hey Alan
In case you are reading this, I have emailed Therese and let her know that you are singing a song or two on the day.
Marty
Well Holly,
Since I am blogging on the computer in your home, I can't say yes or no to your response to my latest riddle.
I am going to have to go back to the suite and count Mom's stuffed animals. They are not the answer to my latest riddle but if there are 89 of them about the suite, I will have to consider your response as a second answer to this particular riddle. Double and triple possibilities have happened in the past, too.
Just last Sunday we were playing with the Valentine bear and listening to him sing. Of course, we discussed noisy toys as gifts to young and old alike. Would you like this one back any time soon?
I will add a hint, though.... the creatures that I did take time to count are loftier than the animals.
LOL, Lucy
Hi Thom...
Here's my attempt to better my last pangram entry:
Rhymed quips daze, vex, jolt and urge few back. (36)
Luce
Hi Marty,
I'm relieved to hear that you are recovering from my assignment of accolades to Mike for your solution to the attic riddle .
To give Mike credit, it was he who pointed out my error to me, (with no small measure of delight, to be sure! He is not going to let either one of us forget about this slip.)
Keep well, now!
Love, Lucy
Hi there, Marcia
With help, encouragement and computer time from my Regina family, I am able to spend a bit of time on the blog.
I am as happy to be with Mom as you are glad to have me here. This afternoon we are having a birthday celebration in the suite in honour of Barbara (July 19) and May (July 20). Ron and Chris have even loaned me a car so that I can go and get May for the gathering.
Barbara is with Mom now so that I can be here. I don't have to tell you that this family of ours is awesome in its love and support.
The weather here is also terrific - bright and warm and good for the spirit.
Lots of love, Louise
luce - are they the creatures on the plates below the ceiling of the suite?
marce - can you get me some later dates on those games?
love mike
Are they angels?
And no, we don't want the bear back! In fact, it was a gift to one of the kids from their godparents (don't get any ideas, Lucy!) and we decided that it would much more welcome in Grandma's house than ours! In any case, just do what we do around here: let the batteries run out and do not replace them!
Luce, very nicely done, a 36-letter pangram is an accomplishment indeed.
Back to the old drawing board. Anyone else fancy a go? The minimum is, obviously, 26 (and would be a world record). I think the shortest one ever created (that actually makes sense) is 28.
I'm back online and I dont know if i will ever catch up. Back in a while
Hi there,
Lucy, your panagram was fantastic since it also told the story of your riddles! And we love you even more because you are happy to be with Mom.
I envy your being there for the birthday party. Like Shawn often says, "dinner - and a show!"
Melissa, Welcome back - it's been a long time, and we missed you.
Mike, the only other Raiders games are on Sep 22 in Vancouver and Sep 30 in the Okanogan area. The play off games are Oct 6, 13,and 20, but the locations won't be decided until the teams are - I believe the Raiders will make the play offs since they are defending champs.
Thom, glad you found lodging in Regina. Now, what the (beep)is with our Riders??
Hope you all got my message about the photo.
See you soon (and I mean it),
Marcia xoxo
Marcia, sigh, I don't know. Getting crushed by B.C. was bad enough, but letting the evil Eskimos back into that game last night was too much to take.
Btw, my sweetness is going to be in Victoria the whole month of August. She's doing a Masters in conflict resolution at Royal Roads. I doubt she'll have a lot of time, but I should try to hook the two of you up.
Happy aniversary Betty jo and Bob
How many years has it been
B.J. and Bob are in Germany. They've been married 45 years.
By all means Thom, Have Lorraine contact us - we'd love to meet her. 250-727-6756 anytime.
Marcia
its another hot muggy weekend in regina and not much is happening on the blog.
were getting close to the 2000 entry, i remember my original guess was 555,
wow, was i out to lunch.
i sure hope the riders can beat edmonton this week, after that terrible second half last game.
32 days to go
mike
I know this is completely off the track of what the blog is about, so excuse me for actually bringing up reunion-planning *grin*.
I now have a couple of options for places to stay (thanks Mom and Dad and Len and Kelly).
I still haven't had any takers on golf, however. I know there are golfers out there and I'd even be willing to set it up myself if people would give me an idea of good (decent and inexpensive) courses and how many duffers are interested. If there is enough interest we could even make it a scramble.
Hmm, huh, anyone????
p.s. re: golf
It would have to be on the Monday. If you're interested, also send me your handicap so I can balance the teams.
If you do not have a handicap (or can't estimate), I'll assume it's high. If you do not know what a handicap is, I'll put you on Lou's team.
p.p.s. re: golf
Very nice to see Mike Weir make a Top-10 finish at the Open. Also nice to see a European win a major for a change, although I was kind of pulling for Sergio. Still hoping Colin will eventually pull one off, when is it in Scotland again?
Oh where, oh where have the blog-people gone
Oh where, oh where could they be
With their riddles and games and their plays on words
Oh where, oh where could they be?
Btw, Marcia, I passed on your telephone number to the lovely Lorraine. Here's her cell number: 250 877 2374. She arrives in Victoria next Sunday.
I spent a hot weekend at the lake with the kids. I checked the blog Saturday morning before heading out there and figured I was safe to wait until we edged closer to the 600 mark before putting up a third post. Now that we've reached 582 and I'm on my way to work, I think it's time.
We spent the weekend out at the beach and I've got a new contest (yay!/groan). I just need to set it up first (how mysterious...)
Hi Y'all
That was easy. It only took me 3 days to get caught up.
It's nice when the blog slows down a bit.
Marty
Hey Thomas...I agree about the Open - nice to see Weir stay in the top 10, not that we got to see him much, even though he finished ahead of Woods (grumble grumble). I was actually hoping Romero would pull it off!
I am waiting for "golf clearance" from the docs but will know by Wed evening. I'm in for golf on Monday if I get cleared...I am around a 35-40 handicap. However, the inability to kill the ball due to my new chest and neck may actually have taken away my slice (this happened in 97 after my central line was inserted), so it's hard to say what my potential is. Worst case scenario I get called a sandbagger LOL.
Not sure if Dad is around Monday or if they're driving back that day. I'll find out.
Holly...bring on the contest! I can't believe you had time, given your family and Facebook commitments
hey thomas - i will golf, i'm not sure where we could play, maybe regina beach, i'll check on it. my handicap is 20-25
mike
p.s - uncle marty's handicap is about the same as trica's
Hey Thomas
I hate to admit it but Mike is right. My handicap is....put it this way: I don't think I've played enough to establish one.
I can't confirm that I will be there on Monday, but it 's a good chance I will be so count me in.
Marty
P.S. I was actually routing for John Daly. He was winning after 8 holes on Thursday.
Thomas (lol) it's nice of you to make it out that I am still a good golfer. In actuality that was in a different lifetime. There are a few good golfers in the family and I would suspect Paul is at the top of the list - I think if you put the non golfers with him, his team would come in at least even par (because that would be based on Paul's own ball!) Other very good golfers would include Vic's Don, Lucy's Dave and Marcia's Dennis and Brant. There are likely others as well that will need some non golfers stuck with them.
As for my golf game - folklore comes to mind. (The thesaurus in Microsoft word lists both legend and myth as a possible meaning of folklore. In my case I think the latter applies.)
As far as being able to play on Monday? I haven't decided when I am returning. I am supposed to be back in Calgary by 8:00 am on Aug 27th - for the Woodridge Ford Annual Golf Tournament! Some things never change!!
Holly...I saw you posted pics on Facebook of your weekend...look great. That must be why you haven't posted the contest...:)
Presumably, we are still trying bring this thread up to 600 if I'm interpreting the history of the blog, so I'll post this one here, before moving on to take three.
Myth or legend Lui, you are part of our folklore.
I can remember playing golf with Lui one morning in Regina. My recollection is there was a wedding that day. It might have even been one of his own kids. Nevertheless, as the first hint of day gnawed at the endless horizon, we were at the course, long before it actually opened.
"We'll pay when we get in," he said confidently.
I was a young, impressionable high handicapper at the time. I may have just broken 100 for the first time not long before. I had not even bought my first set of decent clubs yet.
Lui's shots arced beautifully through the cool prairie air like the wings of angels. He deftly made his way around the track taking only one stroke for every two of mine.
As we made our way back to the clubhouse, a greenskeeper approached.
"Hey, you guys aren't supposed to be out there right now," he chastised us.
Uncle Lui turned, a movement so fluid it breathed life into the surrounding flora.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Antonini," the greenskeeper apologized. "I didn't realize it was you; how did you play, sir."
"Not very well," Lui replied. "Only three under par."
At least that's the way I remember it, but, like I always say: Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
It's excellent to hear we have some interest in golf. Regina Beach sounds great, Mike. We can go for Fish and Chips after.
I was a fairly decent golfer myself at one time. When I was in Texas, I had a legitimate handicap of 11.
Last year, it took me all season, approximately 50 rounds to get it back down to 14. Fortunately my best round of the season, an 81, came during the practice round of the Men's Northern. I was playing to a 15 at the time and 6-under was good enough to win me the low net and a couple of hundred bucks.
This season I haven't played at all. Wedding, work, broken thumb... yada yada yada, excuses, excuses. At this point I doubt I can play to more than about an 18, but my handicap of record is 14, so I'll play to that. Noone is going to accuse me of sandbagging, Trish.
So far, we've got:
Thomas - definitely (reluctantly playing to 14)
Marty - count me in (handicap unknown)
Lui (the legend) - maybe (scratch, whether he likes it or not)
Mike - I will play (20-25)
Tricia - in, if cleared (sandbagging)
Btw, this is 595 on this side. Five more to go before taking the leap to Take Three.
I just made a visit over there and, unfortunately, Dennis is a no go for golf on Monday. He and Marcia are leaving that day. Boo hoo (to coin a phrase from the other side).
I know the grass is always greener, but downloads are so nice and quick on the other side. I can't wait to get there. However, I will refrain from simply down the remaining four comments with nonsensical drivel.
596
Okay, I lied... 597
And I'm going to take 598 as well... but I will leave 599, which will also be 2,000 overall (if noone posts on Take Three between now and then) for Melissa, who I noticed is back on the blog after a much-chagrined absence.
I think my handicap is about 4000, I don't even know if that gives me enough rank to drive a cart.
right ed?
#600 on take two!
He he he I have it!
