ANTONINI REUNION....TAKE THREE

Here we go again. My plan is to bring part two up to six hundred and then the number of posts will be easier to keep track of. Within a few days we will be within one month of the date.

I think everything is going pretty smoothly. We have the student lounge at Campion on the 25th from 12:00 until 10:00. The plan is for each family to bring their own drinks and snacks for the day. I think Vic is bringing some candied popcorn and there are plans for a rice crispie cake. I expect some Italian Confetti as well. The Wok Box is now up and running and we will have them deliver us a meal around 5:30 or 6:00. There are vending machines in the lounge and a water fountain as well. The restrooms are a good size and just down the hall. I believe we all have Marcia's request for denim and white dress. Therese has the performances set and the day is set for visiting.

Sunday the 26th we have the hall at Holy Rosary Cathedral from 12:00 until 5:00. You are welcome to join mom for the 11:00 mass before hand. The CWL will cater with sandwiches, coffee and juice. Cathedral Bakery is making up a cake or two for mom for the day.

If there are any questions or if there is something else you can think of that I have missed let me know and I'll look after it.

See you soon.

Ed

God bless, Mommy & Daddy. God bless all of us children. May we all lead holy, healthy, useful lives. May we all die happy deaths. May we all fulfill the purpose for which we were made and thank You for everything. Amen.

I think that's the answer to your latest riddle, Louise.

Whew!! some catching up again.

Some random thoughts:

Kahless loves to swim underwater more than on top. Many times, he goes under, and I think "something's wrong, he's been under too long". Suddenly, he quietly comes to the surface. Now I know what they mean by 'your spirit will live on in future generations".

Mom's prayer says it all - it is the one prayer I still say every day. The world would do well to live by that one.

A little correction: Grandma's cottage was Nick Nack Nook, I believe. Can anyone confirm?

Frank Dancevic is now 71st in the world.

If it weren't for that pool table at 1140, I may not have met Dennis. He would come to play pool with ED, and I made sure her noticed me.

Lots of love, Marcia

ed said...

Who was he kidding, he never came to play pool with me, I was the one who had to try to make him notice the pool table.

Marcia,
I tried confriming with Jo about the name of Grandma A's cottage before putting it in 'sightings on the blog' but she could not remember and neither could Mom. I thought there was one big K in front of nick nack nook, but I may be wrong. I will see if Joan Daley remembers.

Good eye, Mary-Ellen,
Though your answer to my latest riddle raised a question over whether we prayed for "happy" or "healthy" lives, you made the words of that simple, yet complete family prayer resound again in our hearts.

I was not surprised to learn that some of us still pray those words every day. Mom was especially pleased to hear that.

I listened to Mom with childhood emotion as she prayed those words aloud for me to confirm that "happy" is used twice - once in relation to life and then in relation to death.

Like Thom says .... that pretty well covers it all, doesn't it?

Mike, Mom thinks "healthy" fits nicely, too. You made us laugh; and we've heard that laughter is good for the soul.

Here is yet another riddle:

OUR COUNTRY GOES FROM SEA TO SEA.
AND FOR A WHILE, SO DID WE!

LOLOL, Lucy

Louise and David said...

Robert .... You don't have to worry about stepping on my toes by posting a riddle. Mom and I are eager to enter a possible answer here.

Mom, herself, does not remember her exact words but she thinks she might have said: "Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home", or "Home, sweet, home", or "Highways are happy ways when they lead the way to home."

Whatever her words, Mom was always happy to return to the city after a stay at Regina Beach.

Are we close enough to be given credit for answering your riddle?

Love, Mom and Lucy

Louise and David said...

That's another great quote Mary-Ellen. You take the sting out of being old enough to be a grandparent. We are playful kids at heart.
Love, Lucy

Thérèse said...

Rob,

I think Mom used to say 'There she lies, the Queen City of the Plains' when Regina came into sight. I say it to the girls whenever we come back from a road trip.

Louise,
I think yours refers to when you lived in Port Alice and Mary Ellen lived in St. John's, Newfoundland (now Newfoundland and Labrador.

By the way did you hear the one about when they were renaming that province? They had four options:

Newfrador
Labraland
Newfoundland and Labrador
The Roughriders

I think the best one won out.

Thérèse

Louise and David said...

Ed, ... that is going to be some kite when you finally get it built ... with or without Tony's unique instructions.

Our eldest brother is in Saskatoon today for one of his regular check-ups. Maybe he'll spot a kite flying somewhere along the way and be reminded of past reunion days and future possibilities.

Whatever happens, we are all keen to see your kite rise up into the air over Last Mountain Lake on August 25th. We promise not to let Len cut the string so we can go kite hunting once more for old times' sake.

Lucy

Louise and David said...

OOps, August 24th ...
Kite-flying is not part of our Saturday plans.

Louise and David said...

Oh yes, Therese,
My latest riddle does refer to a time when the Brockett branch of the family tree put down roots in Newfoundland. By then, the Pinvidic and Butcher branches were both firmly planted on Vancouver Island.

Over the years, Mom and Dad managed to visit family in points as far east as St. John's, Newfoundland; as far west as Port Alice, B.C.; as far north as Whitehorse, Yukon; and as far south as Ottawa, Ontario. They were always welcome guests in our homes across Canada.

I wonder how many guesses will be needed for bloggers to figure out this next riddle:

WHATEVER FIGURES WE MAY CHASE,
THIS YEAR, ONE NUMBER HOLDS TOP PLACE.

LOLOL, Lucy

Louise and David said...

Thom ... I spoke to Vic on the phone today. She tells me that Don wants to play in the Monday, August 27th family golf tournament.

So.....please add Don Wohlberg to the competitors list and watch out golfers!
Lucy

Louise and David said...

Marcia .... I love your reminder that one's spirit lives on in future generations. That a too-long submerged grandchild would spark such a realization is awesome. Go Kahless, go Great-grandpa!

Now I think I have something in my eye.
Lucy

Louise and David said...

Okay, Rob,
Mom and I concede to Therese. Though we discussed all the possible comments Mom might have made in the homeward stretch, we never came up with the obvious.

As soon as I told Mom what Therese had answered, she said: "Oh, yes, I did say that more than once or twice as soon as Regina appeared in the distance".

Mom thinks she remembers Bob Barker once adding something about the "Queen City of the prairies" being (with revisions)....the sizable Queen Victoria sitting on her ample bottom.

Now, does that sound like something Bob would say?

LOLOL, Lucy

Louise and David said...

Thanks for the general applause, Bob, but you deserve most of the congratulations on the completion of our family tree.

All we had to do was send pictures and it took us several months to provide you with the stuff you needed to cut and paste, crop and enter, save and print. Well done!

Do you need any reminders from us to be sure to pack the finished product before you leave Ottawa for Regina?

Like the people it displays, that tree just has to be here for our reunion!

Thérèse said...

Louise,

Is that number 90 - a number that Betty Jo has been delighting Mom with every month - and a number we'll be celebrating in both August of '07 and January of '08?

I'm snickering about the guesses for the number of blog entries because it reminds me of one of Mom's pet peeves.

When she used to watch The Price is Right and people had to guess the closest price for the prizes without going over, I remember it used to bug her when someone guessed one dollar higher than someone else. It meant that the only way the first guess could win was to be right on the money - that happened very rarely.

So in homage to Mom, I'm going to give Mike a better chance than myself and go one LESS than him instead. That makes my guess 2776.

Hi Louise

you may very well be right mom has said those things before but it was therese's answer I was looking for and I was telling Bonnie about it last night when we were returning from Minot and I said to her Mom always said "there she lies the Queen city of the plains" however i also said I wasn't sure when she started saying it. she may not have said it when you old foogies were young but she did when we were kids and Bonnie really likes it. I remember mom used to say it when we would see the city just after the weight scales. I wonder how many of us recall this.

I create a new recipe tonight that turned out to be delicious.
In case anybody is interested:

Stuffed Green Peppars (with a couple of twists)

3 Cups Cooked Basmati Rice
1 Dozen Large White Mushrooms
1/2 Large Yellow Onion
6 Cloves Fresh Garlic
1/4 Cup of Butter (preferred) or Olive Oil
6 Large Green Peppars
1 Large Over-ripe Tomato
1 Lime
Fresh Ground Salt and Black Pepper to taste
1/2 Cup Crumbled Feta Cheese
1/2 Cup Grated Mozzarella Cheese
1 Bottle or Can of Beer

Start preparing rice.
Heat butter or oil in a skillet.
Finely chop onion, garlic and mushrooms. Simmer until soft.
Meanwhile, chop off tops of peppars. Remove stem from top, but keep rest of top intact. Clean out body of peppars. Set aside.
When rice is ready, preheat oven to 375 F.
Finely chop tomato and mix with rice along with juice of lime, mushroom mix, salt, pepper and feta cheese.
Stuff peppars.
Replace top of peppars and plug hole with mozzarella cheese.
Pour beer into roasting pan, add peppars and cover.
Bake for 45 minutes, then remove lid and bake another 10 to 15 minutes.
Enjoy.

How about that? Mike Weir got the nod over Stephen Ames to play in the President's Cup next month at Royal Montreal.

The real conundrum, however, is how did either of them make it?

I figured Gary Player had to pick a Canadian because of where it's being played, but I can just see him sitting there going: "Holy Moley, I wish there was a Canadian who is worthy."

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Weir, but seriously, what has he done since he won the Masters? Sure, he was 20th on the points list, but that dates back a while. He has a winning record in previous President's Cups, but that also goes back a while. It would have been nice if he had a good showing at the PGA, but he missed the cut. The best finish he's had all year was T8 and hasn't won in three years. He hasn't even been on the radar in the majors except for one round.

Ames, well, even if he had won the PGA, he isn't really a Canadian, now is he? And that's not to mention his 9 and 8 thumping by Tiger in match play last year.

I hope Player proves me wrong, but I bet he'd like to petition the judge for a change of venue right about now.

Marty Antonini said...

Hey Thomas

I think the reason Gary picked Mike is because he's a nice guy.

Here's what the conversation may have been...

Looks like Ames is playing better than Weir...
Yeah, but Ames went and rattled Tiger's cage and then Sabatini added his little bit and now the tiger is out of his cage roaring like mad. Now the game isn't fair anymore...
We can't let anyone get Tiger mad again... Let's pick Mike... Tiger likes Mike.

I'm pretty sure that's what actually happened.

b@bigdog said...

Let's go fly a house and send it soaring

ed said...

Well, Thomas.

I saw some mullions in a house I was working on today so I kinda ripped them out of the window for my sticks. Then seeing as the chicken wire hadn't been applied for the stucco yet I was able to tear enough house wrap off for my paper. The electricians were using this great string for fishing wires today and I'm sure they can get more at the shop, so I have my string, and I cut some strips out of the California shag they were laying in the master bedroom, it will be perfect for the tail and I'm sure they can stretch it back to the wall. So I'm all set and I guess you could say I will be flying a house.

b@bigdog said...

Ed, that would have been fascinating, if I had any clue what you were talking about.

You may not be an Antonini if you have an aversion to construction work bordering on paranoia.

I did catch the bit about California shag? Are people still doing that? For that matter, do people really still use carpet?

It is amazing that we are obviously going to exceed my guess of 2508. When I put my guess in I thought it would be neat to put my birthday of 2708 but I figured it would be a little too remarkable so I opted fot the first official date of the reuinion at 2508. Now that I think of it, I should have gone with the higher number because we have such an amazing and remarkable family.

Louise and David said...

Yes, Therese, you are right on the number by choosing 90 in honour of Mom in her 90th year.

As soon as Mom celebrated one birthday, her sister Betty teased her about moving on toward the next. For example, when Mom turned 39, Betty teased her about being in her 40th year.

BJ has carried on that tradition in this, Mom's 90th year. Each month, she has sent Mom a package to celebrate the 90th something - Valentine's Day, Easter, spring, summer. Other family members and friends have sent similar reminders.

Of course, our upcoming reunion is being held in anticipation of Mom's 90th birthday on January 19, 2008.

So far 2007 has been a year of celebrations for Mom at every turn. In just over a week, the build up to this special occasion in all of our lives, will be over. We will have arrived. Happy Birthday, Mom!

Here's another riddle to consider in the meantime:

A PHOTO OF THE BUSINESS NAME...
40 YEARS LATER - POSED THE SAME!

LOL, Lucy

b@bigdog said...

No, wait, what do I have to panic about? Wow, that power of suggestion thing is powerful.

Just 8 more sleeps until I leave Smithers. That is if you only count big sleeps, there may be a few naps thrown in along the way.

Mary Ellen said...

Hi Everybody,
The answer to your latest riddle, Lucy, has to be the picture taken of Dad & his seven sons posed with the Antonini & Sons truck, and then the picture the brothers took of themselves 40 years later, each in the same position as they were in the original picture, leaving a spot for where Dad would have been.
I'll be right back; I have something in my eyes!!

10 more sleeps. Yee-Haw!

Love,
ME xoxoxox

BJ said...

Wow, Mary-Ellen, that was fast! Before I even had time to think about it, you had the answer to Lucy's latest riddle. What a great picture that photo is. And what a good idea to do it.
The idea for celebrating Mom's 90th year all year long wasn't mine. Marcia first mentioned it at last year's sisters reunion. Then Therese reminded me of it towards the end of the year. I just took the idea and ran with it, as did some of the others. I guess when you are turning 90 you deserve to celebrate it all year. On to another subject......
With all these guesses about how many postings this blog will end up with, has anyone thought to guess who will be the last to post? Maybe it should be Lucy, but what about Ed, he started it. Or maybe the oldest, or youngest, the one who poste the most, the one who posted the least, the one who hasn't yet posted? Mary-Ellen with a quote, Mom with a prayer, Tony with a joke? Will someone make a contest out of it? Anyone care to hazard a guess? Whoa...what am I thinking? What a maroon! Please disregard the above!
Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Oh, yes, Mary-Ellen,
My latest riddle refers to two of the pictures that Tony, Lou, Ed, Mike, Marty, Len and Rob chose to feature on the cover of their "One August Night" CD.

I am looking at those photos now as I type my response to you. On the left is the long-ago picture of Dad standing beside the Antonini and Sons Ltd. truck with his seven young sons. On the right is the more recent photo of the seven sons trying to reproduce the original image as closely as possible

In the modern-day picture, each son has taken his place, standing in his original position, assuming his former stance and wearing similar clothing. Robert, who was perched on Dad's right arm, faces inward to the space that Dad occupied years ago. In the background is a stand-in truck; the old telephone pole still rises up behind Lou's right shoulder.

From where did the inspirations for these photos come? Who thought to capture the original picture of Luigi Antonini and his seven sons? With what emotion did these men don special clothes and gather in that very spot, now without their father, to revive and mirror a precious memory?

Thanks guys .... expect to see these photos displayed with other family memorabilia on August 25th.

Oops. Sorry everybody. I didn't mean to cause a crisis. I will graciously exempt myself from trying to get this one. Anyone who stays up till 11:59:59 deserves to win.
Edward,
As creator of the Blog, you could legitimately claim the 'last post' but whether your competitive family will let you is another matter. Good luck.
The picture is called The Madonna of the Chair. It is, as Grandma herself put it when she gave me mine, "a labour of love."
Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

You have correctly answered another of my riddles, Ed. I misled you on the "angel" bit of it though.

When I told Mom that you had identified Grandma's picture of Mary, Jesus and the angel. She said, "That's not an angel. That's John the Baptist." Then I got a bit of a history lesson from her.

When Mary was pregnant with Jesus, she went to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was also expecting a child. Elizabeth and her husband had been told by an angel to name their son, John. John and Jesus were close in age and it is likely that they played together as kids.

I did a bit of my own research on web, too. The Seated Madonna, also known as The Madonna of the Chair, is an oil painting done around 1514 by Raphael.

Grandma Antonini stitched this masterpiece in petite point at least five times.

Mom told me how she watched Grandma working on the stitchery project over several months and through the summer. In the fall, Grandma dropped in with the framed picture. Of course, Mom admired the completed work in its exquisite setting. Then Grandma said, "It's for you". Since then it has had a place of honour in the family home.

That's how Mom remembers it anyway. Betty Jo and Vic have the same picture crafted by Grandma; Mom thinks Aunts Vic and Jo also received one from their mother.

Talk about labours of love and treasured keepsakes!

It's riddle time again:

Louise and David said...

Yes, Mary-Ellen,
You have correctly identified Father Keohan as Mom's first teacher of the Catholic faith.

At first, Mom agreed to take instructions in preparation for her marriage to Dad so that she could understand his beliefs and support him in his faith. Without pressure from Father Keohan, Mom ended up wanting to become a Catholic herself.

Mom describes the first priest that she met as a gentle man, personable, understanding and friendly. He instructed and baptized Mom, celebrated Mom and Dad's wedding Mass, counselled them as a young couple and remained their close friend for the rest of his life.

Father Keohan was eventually transferred to a rural parish in the Regina Archdiocese. Even then, Mom and Dad stayed in touch with him and visited him from time to time.

They remained forever grateful to Father Keohan for giving them a good grounding in the Catholic faith and a firm foundation on which to build their marriage.

And the rest is history... as the saying goes.

Now, I wonder who will get the picture on this riddle?

TWO SEASONS AT THE FAMILY HOME,
PAINTED, SIGNED AND PROUDLY SHOWN.

Sonia ... you have left us all wondering about the running water. Is it possible that someone decided to water your lawn? That would be a happy leak. Please don't keep us in suspense for very much longer.

You might be an Antonini if you've ever used your entire supply of towels to mop up a household flood.

LOL, Lucy

Louise and David said...

Mike ... nice mention of Father Ryan. He is better known to many of us than Father Keohan ever was.

I could probably have featured several priests in my blog riddles. Over the years, Mom and Dad have formed wonderful friendships with their parish priests and with the Bishops of the Regina Archdiocese. Father Keohan was just first in the long line of priests who are an integral part of our family story.

Good Morning everyone,

I'm going to leave Lucy's riddle for Thomas, he'll be sorry if he misses it.

Just nine more "big sleeps" to the startup. Maybe a few more for some but for others, the ones who are getting excited, it may be 9 restless nights and 3 exhaustion collapses.

I'm off to work, I'll be coming home to a house of kids, Wednesdays are Nina and Papa's day.

Enjoy your day.

It was the tub that was running. Justin was taking a bath after football...and found something interesting to watch on tv.

there was less than 6 inches left before reaching the top of the tub. so i caught it in good enough time!! whew.

b@bigdog said...

Yes, Lucy, that did throw me off. The other thing that threw me off was the two seasons thing. I remember doing one sketch of 1140 Garnet, but I'm still not sure about the seasons reference.

I also remember painting portraits of Grandma and Grandpa, not sure what happened to those.

BJ said...

Thom's drawing of 1140 was a summer scene. One of Tony's boys (I'm not sure which) did a winter scene of the house. So Thomas, you and I will share the answer to Lucy's latest riddle.

You make a great Son and Mother team, Thom and BJ. Together you have named the two pieces of art referred to in my latest riddle.

Thom's scene of summer at 114O is a coloured pencil drawing of our family home. It is on display in Grandma's living room.

Cory's winter scene is a painting in water colours on light canvas. It hangs in the master bedroom.

Both pictures are signed and dated 1990.

Now that our family home belongs to someone else, these gifts have become even more precious than they were when two grandsons first presented them to their grandparents 17 years ago.

I have to agree with Lou that this is an amazing and remarkable family. You guys are great! No matter how vague or inaccurate my riddles may be, you solve them with enthusiasm and grace. I am encouraged to keep trying to do better.

Hey Lucy

I think I've got this one...
A long time ago when I was working for the family business, I was talking to Mike one night and I was telling him how much I hated working on my knees. I told him my dream was to make a living playing music for people.
He slapped me in the face and said...DO IT NOW! I said: What about my job? He said: Quit! Now! Well, to make a long story short, I did quit that night and I have never looked back.
Thanks Mike, I owe ya. Oh and Thanks Tony, for understanding. I think he was glad to be rid of me anyway. I wasn't a very good floor guy.
Do I get another point Luce?

How could you have known that you would go from one strength to another - from music, to art, to acting? We're glad that Mike shocked you into realizing that you could quit a good job to follow your dreams.

You'd have done that anyway, Marty, but Mike gave you the nudge that got you going sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the birthday wish for Justin Ed! He is 15 today - wow. And he is taller than me too...growing like a weed. Like the weeds in my front yard...

Instead of letting him use the lawn mower today (because I let him use it on the weekend) I think I might let him use his common sense. Wait a second - what I am saying?? Common sense??? He is a teenager - seems I have lost my common sense.

Maybe I will let him drive around today instead - so all Regina dwellers, beware the crazy driver in the green van. And it won't be me driving!!!

In the past years, I have always brought cupcakes or freezies to his football practice and handed them out for his birthday - he always has practice on his birthday.... So last night I was at practice and standing beside him, him with all his equipment on, taller than me, looking so much older than he really is - and I asked him if he would like me to bring something to practice for his birthday. He looked at me with this funny little smirk and said "ah mom, that would be weird" and I said but it's your birthday, and he said "that would be embarassing" hmmmm. i have something in my eye.

so, big question is. should i just embarrass him and do it anyways? not cupcakes though - can't bake those here. but maybe buy a bunch of big freezies?

what should i do??

Yes, Ed,
My latest riddle refers to Holly's June 17, 1994 anniversary gift to Mom and Dad.

The picture shows Dad seated in front of a heart-shaped rice-krispie cake that is topped with Hersey's candy kisses and hugs. Dad's shirt is open at the neck and his tie is hanging crookedly across one of his suspenders. Holly used an informal snapshot to sketch Dad in this relaxed pose.

Holly then used a more formal photograph to fit Mom into the sketch at Dad's left shoulder. The finished picture is dated, signed and beautifully framed in grey and silver tones.

Here in Mom's Regina suite, Holly's anniversary sketch hangs on one side of Grandma Antonini's Madonna of the Chair. Therese's cross-stitched Angel of the Moon is on the other side.

This living room wall is just one of three that are filled with with family artistry and love. I won't attempt to describe all that I see and enjoy as my eyes sweep around this room today.

I'll simply give you another riddle to solve:

A CHILDHOOD GAME WITH EMPTY TIN
PROTECTED FROM THOSE RUNNING IN.

Pat: That's "I remember you" isn't it?
Me: I guess so
Pat: Do you know who sang it?
Me: Sorry, not a clue.
Pat: What? You can't sing a song if you don't know who performed it.
Me: I just did.
Pat: Well, that song is Lou Christie's.
Me: Good for Lou.
Pat: Know what else he sang?
Me: I've never heard of him.
Pat: He went on to form a group called the Lou Christie Minstrels.
Me: Really? You know I'm going to have to check this fact with my brother Lou. It's not that I don't believe you it's just that you're the brother of the girl who asked Shy Violet how high she could fly. Lou will know.

Making sure it's weight is light,
I myself have caused this plight,
Oh dear I think I fear this kite.

I officially concede the most prolific blogger title to Lucy, however. With only seven big sleeps to go before I leave Smithers, I'm afraid I would have to quit my job to catch up. Days like today make me want to. Try dealing with government ministries in August. MLAs are on vacation. Media Relations hacks have no clue what is going on. People in government who do know what is going on aren't allowed to talk to the media.

It's a fast and furious game of pass-the-buck!

That may be one of the funniest catch up's I've experienced on the blog!! I was on the blog late Tuesday but not since then. I got laughing so hard once that I had to go to the washroom - quickly!

Ed, it is quite fitting that you asked me about Lou Christie but I think you are pulling my leg.
Lou Christie was born Luigi Alfredo Giovanni Sacco. He changed his last name from Sacco to Christie quite accidentally because his first hit was credited to Lou Christie by mistake. He wanted to go by the single moniker 'Lugee' but I guess his producer figured it wasn't a good idea.
Anyway, Christie ended up with more than a dozen songs on the charts but I'm afraid "I Remember You" wasn't one of them.

"I Remember You" was written back in 1941 by Victor Schertzinger and Johnny Mercer and has been recorded by close to 50 different artists. The version you likely remember hearing was performed by Frank Ifield who took it to No. 1 back in 1962.

Now comes the funny part. Lou Christie had nothing to do with either the Christy Minstrels or the New Christy Minstrels. The Christy Minstrels were formed by Edwin Christy and were a Blackface minstrel group that performed in New York City back in the middle of the 19th century (1847-1854). The New Christy Minstrels were named after the original group, were formed by Randy Sparks and are a folk group that started in 1961 and are still performing today. Today's version still includes Randy Sparks but is missing some key members from the early years -- Kenny Rogers and three other original members of The First Edition!

Now be honest -- were you pulling my leg or was Pat out to lunch when you had this conversation?

ed said...

You can always count on Lou and Thomas to come through with terrific answers to queries.

Pat does like to impress with his knowledge in all fields. He got Lou Christie wrong and to his credit he wasn't sure once I mentioned I was "running it by Lou". I kinda egged him into the Lou Christie Minstrels by playing dumb, I thought you'd get a kick out of it.

Good eye on my latest riddle, Betty Jo! It was rapidly disappearing off the page in today's flurry of blog entries.

Kick the Can is one of the childhood games we played for summer fun at the beach. It is a variation on Hide and Go Seek.

An empty tin can (of the Campbell Soup variety) was placed in full view on the grass in front of our cabin. The protector of the can was IT. He or she did a countdown while the rest of the players scrambled to find hiding spots in the surrounding area. At the end of the countdown, IT shouted: "Ready or not, you must be caught, hiding around the base or not!"

Then the game was on!

The object was for a player to venture out of a hiding space and kick the can before being found outright or being tagged on the way to the can by the person who was "IT".

If the can was kicked, everyone in the game was home free and the kicker took over the job of protecting the can during the next round of play.

As summer wore on, it got harder and harder to find an unknown hiding spot. Successfully kicking the can was a major victory. The trick was to move quickly before "IT" even had a chance to start looking for you.

It seems that we have been an active, creative bunch of people from the word "Go".

Here's a bit of history to consider:

A FEW OF US REMEMBER WHEN

A FEW OF US REMEMBER WHEN
PROVINCES WENT FROM NINE TO TEN.

I love these riddles because of the way they are worded.

First one must dissect the riddle to figure out what the answer is we're looking for.

In this case, there are three possible answers, the date, the number of the few who would remember and who the few are. Of course the three answers play into each other.

The date is simple, 1949, Newfoundland, now Newfoundland and Labrador (thankfully not Newfrador to borrow from a previous riddle answer), became the last province to join confederation. Did you know part of the deal was a ferry link to the rest of the country?

The number of the few is also simple if one is a proud possessor of the Bob Barker family tree. There are seven (bear with me) born before the historic date of March 31, 1949 Newfies officially became the butt of all Canadian jokes, B.J. (1939), Vic (1941) Lucy (1942), Luigi (1943), ME (1944), Tone (1946) and Lui (1948).

Of course, the real trick about this riddle is, who are the ones who might actually remember it.

We can immediately rule out Luigi who died the day after he was born. I'm also going to rule out Lui, who was precisely six months and four days old when Canadian Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent and British Colony of Newfoundland Lieutenant Governor Gordon Winter signed on the dotted line. In fact, the deal was made Dec. 11, 1948 and came into effect in March, 1949.

I'm also going to question Mary Ellen and T-Bone's recall capacity on this event who were four-and-a-half and 2-and-a-half years old respectively. I have plenty of pre-six-year-old vague memories but none are political. My very first political memory is the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) crisis of October 1970. I was six years, four months old. My second is the resignation of Richard Nixon on Aug. 8, 1974, two months, 1 day after my 11th birthday.

However, a new province was undoubtedly an extremely memorable event, especially in the pre-TV, pre-Internet, pre-information overload world of 1949. So, I am going to with the answer that there are three Generation 2 Antoninis that remember this story: B.J., Vic and Lucy.

Wow, that was fun.

b@bigdog said...

Sorry, lost a bit of detail in my excitement at the end there.

B.J (15 days shy of 10-years-old), Vic (17 days shy of 8-years-old) and Lucy (6-years and exactly 9-months old).

b@bigdog said...

That's what I said, if you want to know something send it out to Lou or Thomas. Of course, if you want to know about building a kite, ask T-Bone. Except he's probably busy, manicuring the grass or painting the house or putting a new motor in a car or ripping a lawn out or building a shower or tiling a kitchen floor or putting a new roof on or catching somebody trying to steal a million bucks...just taking care of business. I hope he makes it to the reunion.

I'm off to work again, which isn't such a bad thing, I'm thinking about picking up some more supplies for another kite...just in case.

People are going to be watching me try to fly my kite? But...But...I'll freeze, I'll get stage fright, the only reason I'm not singing and performing profesionally at this time is because of my stage fright. I remember my first time on stage, all I had to remember was "10 lords a leaping", I even had nine other little lords to help me, but I went into a daze after someone blurted out something about some kinda bird in some kinda tree.

Happy Birthday, Len, for the new you on your new day!

Wow, that WAS fun, Thom!

You can put your twirling gun back into your holster now; you really hit the mark this time. I believe that I enjoyed reading your answer to my latest riddle as much as you enjoyed writing it.

You are correct about the 1949 addition of a new Canadian province being a memorable event. Our teachers used the moment to tell us more about this great country of ours. We celebrated Newfoundland's arrival with excitement akin to welcoming a new kid into the family.

There's nothing more for me to add to your awesome riddle response. All I can say, clearly and simply, is: DAMN YOU'RE GOOD!

.... and quickly enter another riddle, ... (a too-late diversion tactic, BJ - nice try, though!)

PATRON SAINT OF FOLKS ON WAYS;
(AT LEAST HE WAS...IN BYGONE DAYS).

Love, Luce

Happy 48th Birthday, Len!
With love from Mom and Louise.

We remembered you at breakfast this morning. Without a memory aid, Mom recalled your 1959 birth date along with those of your closest siblings born in 1954,56,58 and 60.

With a sigh, she commented: "All my children are growing old".

I wish I had read Mary-Ellen's quote of the day before joining Mom at the breakfast table. I'll wait until lunch now to give her Emily Dickinson's perspective on aging.

So...Happy NEW day, happy NEW year, Len!

Louise and David said...

Ed... don't panic but ...

What if it rains? Should I bring an umbrella?

Louise and David said...

You might still have time to purchase water-resistant kite material. Butcher paper might work!

Just trying to help....Lucy

Hi Louise,

St. Christopher ( patron saint of travelers ) seems to fit your latest riddle. I remember Dad having a St. Christopher medal in one of the station wagons. Actually, I think it was a statue that had a magnet on the bottom so it would stick to the dash. Occassionally he would topple over - a sign for Dad to slow down ( or wake up )!

Hi to everyone in Blogland. Weren't BJ's words in her Blexicon absolutely brilliant descriptions of what's happening on our blog? There is a whole page of them in the August Bugle, and I was trying to pick a favorite, but there are so many favorites that you just have to love them all!

Loving this Blogathon,
ME xoxoxo

b@bigdog said...

Hmmm, I never got my August Bugle. I think maybe my subscription ran out. I didn't get July either. Or June, May, April, March. Guess I better call the office.

BJ said...

I've just finished listening to all my Elvis recordings. How are the rest of you doing?

b.j - i watched larry king the other night from graceland, they showed all the rooms in the house except his private office, it was very interesting. best book about elvis, elvis what happened, written by the his body guards. he would of been 72 this year. did elvis die on lens birthday?

BJ said...

Mike,
No. Elvis died on August 16. I listened to his music yesterday. I usually listen to music that is appropriate to the day. For example, on Nov 11, I listen to war music, on Feb 9, I listen to Mozart's Requiem (in honor of Dad) etc. So yesterday I listened to Elvis. I just wondered if anyone else on the blog had done so.
Love, BJ

Hey Mom

Just out of curiousity, who are the siblings born in 1954, 56, 58 and 60?

Marty

b@bigdog said...

Let me be the first to say: GO RIDERS.

Anyone going to the game tomorrow?

Louise and David said...

Marty, Marty, Marty....
Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Of course, the dates in my entry should have read 54,56,57 and 60.

You have to know that Mom did not make this error .... Lucy did. I am not even going to tell her about my mistake. She will not be amused. She and I actually discussed your 50th birthday in the remembering process.

Mom didn't have to consult the family tree but I should have double-checked my favorite reference before I went to the blog to wish Len a happy birthday.

So little brother, figure out some way that I can make amends to you for lopping a year off your life. Please don't tell Mom, though.

Love, Lucy

Right on, Mary-Ellen!
Christopher is the saint that I referred to in my latest riddle.

I'm sure that many of us remember Dad's statue of Saint Christopher carrying the Christ child on his shoulders. He wasn't always perched on the dashboard but he was in the car with us nevertheless.

In 1969 St. Christopher was removed from the universal calendar of saints because there was not enough historical evidence that he even existed. However, parish devotions to St. Christopher were not discouraged. The feast day of this "down-graded" saint is still celebrated on July 25th.

To this day Christopher remains the patron saint of travelers. Legend has it that he once agreed to carry a small child across a flowing stream. The child grew so heavy that Christopher struggled to reach the other shore. Once there Christopher learned that the Child was Christ, himself laden with the weight of the world's sins.

Christopher means "light-bearer" - showing the way to wandering people. He may well be watching over you in the coming days.

Now, let's see where we go from here:

SIXTEEN SQUARES OF SYMBOLS SHOW
RELATED PEOPLE, ROW ON ROW.

Love, Lucy

BJ said...

Lucy,
This has to be the wall hanging you made for Mom and Dad. One for each parent and each child. There was an appropriate symbol for each, eg. a piano keyboard for Marty and so on. I will leave it to you to give each symbol and its significance. I remember quite a few of them.
Lpve. BJ

BJ said...

That is, one SQUARE for each.

Holly Gustafson said...

I always thought Auntie Therese made that wall-hanging! Can't wait to hear about each other the squares!

Thomas, I think it's quite impressive that you made the 100 Club when you came to the blog relatively late in the game.

b@bigdog said...

Thank you Holly, "impressive" is a very kind interpretation of the stats. Some might prefer verbose, while others would simply say: "GET A LIFE!"

Nevertheless, it is true that the only blogger more prolific than me had a two-month head start and that person also happens to be retired.

Of course, those two months were back in the day when the blog was still a reasonable exchange of reunion information and not the uncontrollable mayhem of its current incarnation.

On the other hand, one must consider that this is basically what I do for a living so, you'd really have to factor in the blog handicap (you can add that to your blexicon, BJ). Being a professional, that would give me an index of zero.

Despite the fact there are plenty of people in this family who are extremely low-handicappers doing something day-in and day-out is certainly an advantage.

b@bigdog said...

Just been reading the blexicon. This is seriously worthy of wider publication. BJ, with your permission, I will call Peter Simpson (Ottawa Citizen entertainment editor) and pitch it to him.

ROTFKMWL - kudos to the first person who deciphers this.

b@bigdog said...

With a few edits to make it less specific to the family blog, of course.

b@bigdog said...

Okay just finished reading the blexicon and at the risk of being a blogrunner, bloghog, blogmeister and/or blogaholic (hmmm, don't remember seeing that one) all I can say is: BRILLIANT!

Oh yeah, and: THAT'S MY MOM!

marty antonini said...

Hey Luce

No need to apologize. You guys are still mixed up. I was born in 1967.

Hey BJ

Good job on the bugle.

b@bigdog said...

Ah, Len, master of the bloglet.

Does this qualify? Oops, I guess not anymore.

b@bigdog said...

Mar-TAY, or is it Marty? So hard to tell, which one was born in 1967 and which one in 1957? Looking forward to jamming. Are we going to get to jam? Should I bring my mando?

b@bigdog said...

BTW, Len, what are the sleeping arrangements for the beach on Friday? Should I count on pitching my tent?

b@bigdog said...

Dang, I'm blogrunning again. Maybe I will catch up to Luce. Naw, her next blogrun is undoubtedly not far off.

ed said...

Ok, I loved the blexicon, blogvana is great, I reached it right after Mary-Ellen's first entry.

Other examples of bloglets, way back at entry 83...8...7...6 and so on.

Although I have joined Thomas, Tricia and Melissa as a blogmeister by having my own site, my hat's off to Thomas...a superblogmeister with his own site and over 200 postings on another site.

I just had a really wierd unbidden memory.

Bear with me. I'm not a cold pizza kind of person, but I let my pizza get cold and because I was so busy blo... er, I mean watching a movie, I grabbed a piece. For some reason that reminded me of Don Wohlberg who, allegedly, used to (and maybe still does) like cold pizza.

That led me to a quantum memory leap to a time when I was a teenager and helping with the re-roofing of Don and Vic and Michelle and Mike's house in Richmond, Ontario. Now, I'll be the first to admit that me and construction is like George Bush and intelligence, so I don't know what Don was thinking except that he was probably trying to help his ne'er-do-well nephew go straight. I missed my footing and went through the ceiling into the living room (I'm having flashes of a woodstove, or maybe it was a TV).

In any event, I can remember Don looking at it and saying something like: "That's okay, I have to replace that ceiling anyway."

Funny how memory works.

So I turned 48 today, i still feel 19, i dropped Amy off at Tahnee's her friend who turned 19 today, we have the same birthday, now we are both allowed to drink. thank you everyone who wished me a happy birthday.

If Steven really shows up I guess he'll have to stay at our place with his two brothers, (I can hardly wait).

Whose coming to the cottage?
How many hot dogs do I need for friday night??? or should I warn Butlers they may need a bigger boat and more fish.

I fixed the roof the other day so we don't have to worry about rain inside, don't forget this cottage has been in our family for over 60 years, don't expect too much. But there's nothing like staying at the beach. I don't know how may of you remember, but one of my favorite memories was when you had to go to Regina for the day and dad had to wake you up..... he would grab you by your toe so he wouldn't wake everyone else up. He was awesome.

We are less than a week away. Signing off from blogland with Kelly the Blurker reading over my shoulder.

Blognight, blog bless you

I'm close, I'm thinking of pulling an all nighter to prepare the kite for launch tomorrow. With any luck I'll have some wind and it won't be raining tomorrow.

b@bigdog said...

Ed, I actually have two other blog sites: bloggingatthebigdog.blog.com, which is my official The Interior News blog and barkingatthebigblog.blogspot.com, which was my workaround solution to the problem of not being able to post photos, music and other sundry stuff to this blog.

b@bigdog said...

The funny thing is, I resisted, for years, going blog, despite the encouragement of many people. I wanted to be in print. Now that I'm constantly in print, I'm turning into Mr. Blog.

ed said...

Hey Len, I'll have a couple dogs Friday night, I'll probably need them after running around with the kite all day.

ed said...

Thom, I didn't know about your other site, a superduperblogmeister, I take my wig off to you as well.

ed said...

I'm getting blogeyed, one BJ missed, it's when you've been blogging so long your eyes start drying up and your bottle of blogdrops is empty. Ok...Blogdrops: the drops you use to keep your eyes from drying out while blogsessing.

Tomorrow...oops...later today

b@bigdog said...

The Bugle must have only published the abridged version of the blexicon. Blogeyed, I love it.

Don't worry, Ed, you don't need to take off you blogrug for me.

marty antonini said...

Hey Len

Hey Thomas
