Happy New Year to all.

This year we are bringing it in with a gang! That's not a typo, the gang of four, Eddie, Mia, Lui and Ellie are staying over. We celebrated early with the noise makers and hats. We know better than to keep them up until midnight.

Love to all and best wishes for 2009

Birthday greetings on New Year's Day, Carol

There is double cause for celebration in your home today: YOU and Year 2009!

We hope your birthday is as bright and beautiful as the 'round-the-world fireworks that heralded the arrival of another brand new year.

Have a great day. . . with Tony, family and friends on hand to make this an especially happy time for such an important person in all of their lives.

Cheers, best wishes and lots of love,

Happy New Year's Day Birthday, Christine!

This is certainly a day of happy FIRSTS for you: January 1st, 2009, your first birthday as a retiree, and the beginning of your first full calendar year of retirement. ENJOY!

We know that Ron will do his best to make this day truly yours. For our part, we will raise a wee (double) dram in a toast to you on this day of promising beginnings. Cheers!

Lots of love and warm wishes,

Happy Birthday, David

Emmanuel, Hannah-Lynn and Grace-Anne probably really enjoy the fact that their Dad's birthday falls on New Year's Day. Because of you, there is added cause for celebration at the start of every new year.

May this special day be just the beginning of another year of healthy, happy family life for you, Barbara and your children.

Best wishes and lots of love,
Louise and David

It's the third day of January and we are still in a deep freeze here in Westbank. We got another foot of snow yesterday and it's -19 this morning.

Back in St. Andrews, Dave's golfing buddies played a New Year's Day tournament over four links courses including the famous Old Course.

Hmmmm....

Birthday greetings, Holly

Your Monday birthday will likely be a busy one for you, with Eddie and Mia returning to school after the holidays and Lui and Ellie needing their share of your attention, too.

Come evening, the "gang" will be eager to gather round the supper table, blow out your candles and eat cake in celebration of their Mom's special day. Fun and excitement are built into your life with such a beautiful family. Enjoy their presence!

Here's to a very happy birthday, Holly! Cheers!

Lots of love,

Hi All,
It's been very quiet on the blog lately. Maybe it's the winter weather. I know Ottawa is being hit by another storm, Sask. is freezing, and Calgary's forecast is for some pretty minus 0 conditions. Lucy also sounds like she's snowbound in Westbank.
Stay warm everyone!

Love,

Mother Nature is in an ugly mood! We are finally no longer under a storm warning, but we are digging out and dealing with heavy roads and the 30th day of our bus strike. Everyone else seems to be struggling with winter as well. Must be Canada!
On the brighter side, our Juniors won another World Hockey Championship, the days are getting longer (the sun is setting at 4:38 today, which means it isn't full dark until 5:38), and we have started a new year.
I hope you are all coping in your little corner of the world. Cheers to all.

Hi from BC!
For the second day in a row, the temperature has gone above freezing in Westbank. Mounds of snow are melting at an alarming rate and there are huge puddles everywhere. Flood alerts have replaced blizzard warnings. We have gone from one extreme to another.

Yesterday David and I went out for lunch in Kelowna with Aunt Jo and her daughter, Penny. That was pleasure enough to brighten any day. Jo is flying back to Regina on the 11th, Penny and Doug are leaving for a holiday of their own on the 16th and David and I are scheduled to return to the UK on the 19th. I'm just glad that we found a suitable day for a short visit over lunch. Perfect timing!

Keep digging, sweeping, wading, swimming . . . whatever it takes to get through winter, wherever you are.

Love, Lucy

You sure picked a cold time of year to get married!

However, a look back at your 2007 wedding pictures taken in Puerto Vallarta should warm things up for you. What a happy day that was for all who were able escape winter to be with you in that idyllic setting!

Here in Westbank, we will raise a warm anniversary toast to you: Here's to a happy celebration of TWO for you 2! May you share happiness, health and prosperity for many years to come. Cheers!

Okay people, let's write a short story. I will provide the first line and everyone can add another line. Let's see how long we can keep it going. If anyone would like to replace my first line with a better one, please feel free. Just make sure you say it is the first line. Here goes:

The answer to my question came quickly. As handcuffs closed tightly around my wrists, the strong scent of lavender made my head spin.

Mary Ellen said...

The chinook blowing through Calgary has made it so warm that:
A man rode his horse to church this morning, only to find the steeple sticking out of the snow. So he tied his horse to the steeple with the other horses, and went down the snow tunnel to attend services. When everyone emerged from the church, they found that the chinnok wind had melted all of the snow, and their horses were now all dangling from the church steeple.

TRUE STORY!

Mary Ellen said...

The strong lavender scent ( along with the handcuffs) caused the strange-looking parcel to fall to the ground and pop open.

She has an entrance examination in the coming week and hopes to be able to qualify for the next round of entrance exams. She recently won a full time competition for a job with the City of Regina, and is also cotinuing her university degree.

Cory and Amy are continuing their wedding plans and are trying to make accomodation arrangements for their parents who have finalized air arrangements for the wedding.

As we told you before, the rest of the kids have left their problems (ie cats and kids) with us and are off on a holiday.

Hi lucy,
The strange thing about a Chinook wind is that not only does it melt the snow very quickly, but it also causes it to evaporate. Thus, the hot dry wind dries things up, rather than creating a flood. "Chinook" is a native word meaning "snow-eater".A Chinook wind can make snow one foot deep almost vanish in one day; partly melting and partly evaporating. We've seen it happen in Calgary quite often.
However, this can be a bad thing for Calgary gardeners since plants can be brought out of their dormant state only to become vulnerable to later cold spells.

The Chinook we're having right now is not going to last long and we will once again be back in winter! Those horses will have snow beneath their hooves soon enough!

Love,
ME xoxoxoxo

marty antonini said...

There goes our chinook.

3 men went out to play a round of golf, Moses, Jesus and an old man. Moses tee’d off first, and the ball landed in the water. He parted the water, and hit the ball in for a birdie.
Jesus tee’d off next, and the ball landed in the water. He then walked on the water and hit the ball in for a birdie.
Lastly the old man tee’d off, but before the ball could hit the water, a fish jumped out and caught the ball in it’s mouth. Then an eagle swooped down and caught the fish. Lightning then struck near the eagle, frightening it, and it dropped the fish. When the fish hit the ground, it dropped the ball in for a perfect hole in one.
Jesus and Moses turned to the old man, and Jesus said, “Dad, if you don’t quit playing like that, we’re not going to bring you anymore.”

Louise and David said...

Mary Ellen ... thanks for telling us the meaning of the word "chinook" and for describing how a chinook wind operates. Your punch line is the best, though ... dangling horses with "snow beneath their hooves", indeed! The mental picture gets even funnier.

Marty ... I'm guessing Calgary's latest chinook has come and gone. Good timing on the joke - keep 'em laughing, eh? You're a master at that.

Question after question whirled around in my lavender-soaked brain:

...Did tattoo-wearing Garry really switch places with hair-dyeing Gerry on that fateful day?

...Didn't I destroy the bath mat?

...What's on that tape?

Anonymous said...

The thought of this tape recorder made my heart skip a beat. Could Gerry have known about my diary? For years I had been recording my diary rather than writing. I always waited to ensure he had driven away before taking the recorder from the closet. Could he have somehow been in two places at once? Had he discovered my daily routine?

Here's an oldie:

A ninetyish looking man was asked by a reporter "To what do you owe your longevity"?

He replied: "I never drank, never smoked, and I worked hard but abstained from strenuous activity such as sex.

"How old are you?" continued the reporter.

"Ninety Five." was his response.

The gentlemen sitting next to him was slightly younger looking and the reporter questioned him also. "How old are you, sir?"

"101." replied the man and offered, "I owe this to a healthy diet, one ounce of brandy each day after supper, and limiting my sex to once per week with my wife of seventy five years."

A third gentlemen, who looked a litter older than the other two, was looking on in interest. "What about you, sir, to what do you owe your longevity?" asked the TV guy.

"Actually, I never took any particular care with my diet and I ate fast foods, lots of fried food, and experimented with all kinds of foreign and questionable delicacies. I drank almost a fourty of whiskey every two or three days, and there is probably not a house of ill-repute in the province that I have not frequented at least once."

"Oh my goodness!" exclaimed the reporter. "Just how old are you?"

"If I live until Friday," responded the man, " I'll be sixty three years old."

After 'THE DEED' I had disposed of the bath mat not knowing whether the red stain was blood or simply red hair dye. I had thrown the plastic bag in the garbage bin behind Safeways and waited until the truck came to dump it. Could that have been my missing dry cleaning???

Anonymous said...

Either I misread the initial instructions for this story, or the periods in my last entry should have been commas?

Louise and David said...

Don't worry about it Tony. This story breaks all the rules. The only instruction is for us to see how long we can keep it going.

To that end:

Once again, the answer came swiftly as the detective explained, "Being experts on stains, the dry cleaners turned the bath mat over to us. We tracked you down through your own DNA and that of your victim. You are under arrest for Garry's murder. What we want to know now is why you killed your brother-in-law."

You're right about the flood taking our Book of Knowledge. I remeber vividly because you asked me if I was done with them, and I was through them about half-way for the second time so I said you could throw them out.

Alas, Holly,
If only it had been metaphorical. Unfortunately, it was all too real. I can't remember how the basement got full of water, but I did help with the clean-up. I can't speak for the rest of the clean up crew, but I, being young and foolish saw it as a way to clean out the basement. I don't remember everything that was thrown out, but I did throw out some crinolines that belonged to someone else and I also remember making silly jokes about the vast amount of toilet paper saving the basement by absorbing most of the water. It was a pretty ruthless clean-up. Ah, callow youth, whose besetting sin is thinking they know better than their parents! I am sure much of what we threw out was savable, and it is perhaps better that we don't know. Does anyone else remember?

Those were MY crinolines. I always wondered what happened to them. They looked great under my poodle skirt, finished off with saddle oxfords & bobby socks. Grace-Anne . . . you're welcome! Those lemon cupcakes would be a hit with me, too. I'm glad you've had such a fun time on your birthday.

BJ . . . I really don't think very much of anything that we threw out could have been saved. Groceries, books, records, maps, sheet music, clothing, costumes, bedding, footwear, photos, pictures and frames, albums, letters, cards, school memorabilia, furniture, decorations, keepsakes, toys, mom's paint supplies, flooring, etc. were thoroughly soaked in muddy waters that rose as high as the first step from the landing that led into the back wing of the house. Things were not just water-damaged, they were submerged and, as the water subsided, they were left soggy and rotting until we were able to wade into the mess and load the refuse onto a truck bound for the dump.

ME . . . your 50's outfit sounds just like mine. I loved those taffeta skirts that doubled as witches' capes on Hallowe'en.

Hey Guys

I remember the flood well. I was in Regina Beach at the time.

Believe it, three tornados hit Regina that day and the streets flooded which caused the sewer to back up. The basement was flooded 4feet deep. I remember seeing only the two top stair steps.
I also remember Dad telling me that if we had had the cap on the drain,(behind the furnace),it may not have flooded.

ed said...

Thanks for the birthday greeting Louise.

What I remember about the flood was the 3/4 ton truck loads of water damaged stuff. I remember about 4 truck loads. There was a lot of stuff in that basement.

ed said...

Crinoline? I always thought that was the gruelling run the truckers did through Crooked River, Rabbit Lake, Indian Head, Neptune and Old Wives. I heard it was damn near impossible in winter.

BJ said...

Okaaay...I'm beginning to think I was never there for the flood. How much of what we remember is memory and how much is what we've heard from others after the fact?
Of course, Ed. Now I remember what a crinoline really is. Thanks for reminding me. And by the way almost everything is impossible in the winter!
Love, BJ

marty antonini said...

Okaaay...maybe the twisters didn't hit Regina, but they were close enough that the streets were rivers for a short time. They were still flooded when I got home from Regina Beach. Doesn't anyone remember that?

Today I am remembering Mom as well - born January 19, 1918. I was with her in 2001 when she got the phone call telling her that she had a new great-grandson to share this birth date with her. She was so excited.

Happy memories and lots of love,
Louise

Today we are toasting Marcia and Tony on the 11th anniversary of their kidney transplant surgeries.

Here's to one who makes such a generous gift of life, to another who so thankfully receives it, to all those who benefit indirectly, and to LIFE itself!

Cheers and lots of love,
Louise and David

Happy Birthday, Michael!

We hope our wishes add a bit of warmth to your January birthday in Saskatchewan. At least the 23rd falls on a Friday this year. That should bring your work week to a celebratory close and make for a happy start to your weekend.

Here in St. Andrews we are raising a toast to you, Michael. We hope your birthday is enjoyable from beginning to end. May it be a good indicator of all that lies ahead for you in 2009.

Lots of love,
Louise and David

I was gonna ask you why you didn't put Mike's age all over the page like you do for some others, but I realized people might figure out how old I am.

Marty . . . here's a hint. I try to stay away from posting all but the ages of children and youth, still eager to grow up. However, when it comes to anniversaries, every year is a milestone worth celebrating.

And . . . . I love listening to Kenneth's performances on vimeo.

Thanks Marcia for 11 more years with my wife and family (extended, as well) than I might have never had.

Also, a debt of gratitude to all who played a role praying, testing for matches, and just being there. The power of love is beyond words.

I love listening to uncontrollable laughter.

BJ said...

Marty,
I should probably leave it for Lucy to explain, but I can't resist:
A Haggis is a peasant dish compounded of meat leftovers, oatmeal, spices and offal all pouched in a sheep's stomach.
I am guessing that when it is cut into at a Robbie Burns supper, it bursts and makes some sort of noise . I will have to leave that to Lucy to explain because I have never heard it.
Love, BJ
P.S.
Aren't you glad you asked?

marty antonini said...

...Oh...My...Gosh...

BJ said...

Are you sorry you asked?
BJ

kbub said...

I made a haggis once. I was told it's acceptable to cook it in a boiler bag instead of a sheep stomach. (Good thing, too, 'cause the grocery store was fresh out of stomachs).

marty antonini said...

No, I am not sorry I asked because anytime I get a chance to receive advice from one of my big sisters, no matter what it is reguarding, I seize the moment.

Love,
Marty

marty antonini said...

Actually, in this case, I meant... when I receive information, as opposed to advice, from their vast storage of knowledge.

BTW ... a haggis makes a whooshing sound of air being released like a big sigh of relief. The person addressing the haggis splits the outside skin with with a knife, first one way and then the other. The skin peels back and the filler seems to gush out, hot and ready to eat. We have discovered that a cream and whiskey sauce adds flavour to the traditional meal of haggis, mashed potatoes and neeps.

LOL, Lucy

marty antonini said...

Okay, maybe it's just me, but it still don't sound too appetizin'.

Louise and David said...

To be truthful, I have to agree.

BJ said...

Lucy,
Have you actually tasted it? And I am assuming that neeps are turnips? It sounds pretty gross to me, but then our hot beef sandwich was positively appalling to the Galloping Gourmet. So maybe, it is just what you get accustomed to. To each his own.
Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Yes, BJ,
I have had two traditional haggis meals so far. The most recent was at a supper last Wednesday evening. I like potatoes and turnips and the two together can mask the flavour and texture of the haggis. The cream and whiskey sauce was a great help, too.

It is not a meal that I would choose except at events that are held in honour of Robbie Burns.

Lucy

BJ said...

Yes, Lucy, a sauce can cover a multitude of sins. And from what I have read recently, the eating of the Haggis is followed by everyone "drinking a toast of whiskey. Or simply drinking more whiskey, showing that they have grasped the essence of the event."

Love, BJ

Louise and David said...

Ah, yes, BJ, ... and always the whiskey to grasp "the essence of the event".

Cheers, Lucy

marty antonini said...

Or...maybe they just need the whiskey to washed that stuff down.
