Scarecrow Festival today in Lumsden. Maybe it should be called Halloween Festival, there will be dumbies dressed as electricians hanging on the side of telephone poles, you remember telephone poles. There's one display that is a pirate ship, pirates and a damsel in distress guard a ship load of gold coins of the chocolate variety, probably the only time you'll see children fearlessly loot a pirate ship. Zombies rising up from in the ground, Dorothy walking the yellow brick road with her friends, Red being stalked by the wolf, prisoners escaping from jail, just to name a few. Some creative minds in that little town. We'll join the kids for a horse and wagon ride throughout town. Now there's a day to toast to life!
Have a great day

Okay, I have the results of 2 quizzes that we did together in September.
In the "NEW NAMES FOR OLD" quiz we scored 23 out of 24. I made a mistake in researching #23 (Gilbert Islands). I entered Tangaru instead of Kiribati.
In the "HERE COMES THE BRIDE" quiz we scored 19 out of 25. To make things easy, I'll repeat the original question with our answer in brackets followed by the correct answers. No explanations were given.
6. I stand in the cathedral (AISLE) MINISTER
7. Accosts (ADDRESSES) BUTTONHOLES
10.Where to place your bets (ANTE-ROOM) BOUQUETS
12.Turn it quickly in the "who-done-it" (SITTING) PAGE
15.Friendly benefits (NICE GIFTS) FAVOURS
22.Rinses packet anagram (SPINSTER CAKE) PRINCESS KATE
I have a couple more quizzes to post but I will do that later. For now, we can digest the latest results.

Okay, I have really been getting behind with all the quizzes that Margaret has been providing for our solving enjoyment.
Here's the situation. I'm holding 5 quiz sheets. One is about Scottish Towns and Villages and its October 15th deadline has already passed so I'm going to set that one aside for now.
A second sheet features "places and things you'll find in Cupar" and it requires some local knowledge of that Fife community. We'll leave that one for Margaret to solve since she lives and works in Cupar.
The third quiz is "Songs from the Shows" and Vic and I completed that one together with relative ease. That entry form is ready to put in the mail for its October 31st deadline.
So in the end, I will post the last two quizzes in the order they are due - one on November 15 and the other on the 30th. Happy solving!

Could 12 be BRASS RAIL? (bras +rails)
18. BEADLE (A DL in a bee)

These are the ones I think I know without going to the Internet:
2. Oliver Twist
4. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
5. Little Women
7. The Hercule Poirot mysteries. I'll choose The Mysterious Affair at Styles. (I think that is the correct Title)

I am willing to look up the others if no one else wants to. I think you should answer the questions to all our quizzes when before you put them on the Blog, Lucy. Otherwise the rest of us get in ahead of you.
Do we have to give the author?
And I see we can name just the series. So I guess The Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes answers don't actually need a specific title.
I just remembered that No. 1 is from The Thirty Nine Steps. Most of the others sound very familiar and I know I am going to kick myself when I find out what novels they are in.

Here's what National Geographic says about Puffins. Puffins are found on North Atlantic sea coasts. Some easy points of access include Skomer Island (sometimes spelt Skoma) off the Pembrokeshire Coast, Puffin Island (Ynys Seiriol) off Anglesey and Staffa Island, which can be accessed from the coast of mull or Iona in the western Isles of Scotland. Because of the isolation of these islands the puffins are able to breed in relative peace, with only the odd tourist wandering past taking photos to bother them.
I am willing to keep trying to solve #21 to see if we can find something better.
Also check:
http://www.northumbrianwildlifetours.co.uk/
Thanks, BJ.
I'm totally comfortable with PUFFIN as an answer for 21. Those amazing birds certainly belong on a quiz that celebrates WILD LIFE UK.
Now, do we have answers for 8 and 32 yet?
Lucy
I am totally stumped on 8 and 32. I've checked all 101 different sheep for 32, tried anagramming, synonyms for correct and right, and changed ewes to yous.
For 8 I've tried slow, dull, drab for bored, looked up slow-moving animals and birds, synonyms for planes, looked for hidden words etc. Where do I go from here?
I feel the same way, BJ. It sounds like you and I use many of the same strategies in tackling the clues in a quiz like this.
I'll ask Margaret whether she has answers to the two that are stumping us. Sometimes an extra brain is just what's needed.
LOL, Lucy
BJ, number 8 just came to me as I was falling asleep. I had to get up and post it on the blog....

Well done, Lucy. Just #32 to go. I still haven't come close. Maybe Margaret can finish it off for us.
Hi BJ,
I talked to Margaret and she has an answer for #32 - SHEEP TICK
She has also suggested two revisions:
21. HORNET (anagram of north + e)
22. SLOW WORM
That's it, then. I have one more quiz to post before too long.
Lucy
Wow! Who knew there was such a thing as a sheep tick? And what were our chances of ever discovering it? I've also never heard of a slow worm, but I certainly take Margaret's word for it.
And hornet looks to me like the best answer for 21.
I had to look up these 2 new creatures:
The Slow-worm is a lizard. It looks like a snake in some respects but the fact that it has eyelids, a flat forked tongue and can drop its tail to escape from a predator gives its true identity away. The Slow-worm is probably the most commonly encountered British reptile.
Not only is the sheep tick a common inhabitant of the British Isles, it is also the tick that causes lyme disease!

19. HOBBY
26. MANDARIN (Duck)
24. CORMORANT (corm or ant)
Lucy,
Are the birds in our quiz only birds that live in the UK?
#7 could be TOUCAN (two can), but I don't think toucans live in the UK.
The topic of the quiz is simply BIRDS, BJ. and TOUCAN is definitely a good answer for #7. Anything goes here. You're doing very well so far.
28. REDPOLE
Lucy
Hi Lucy,
Good answer for 28, but I think redpoll is spelled with 2 ls and no e. We get them in our yard once every 3 years or so.
Could #25 be PUFFIN?
Yes Puffin is great, BJ. Thanks for the correction on Redpoll. It was definitely a typo error and the spelling is correct on our entry form.
I have no new answers at this time.
Lucy
Hi Lucy,
Do you think #8 is a 16-letter anagram or just part of it is anagramed? There is a robin, a thrush, a heron and who knows what else in it, but I can't find any one or even two-word anagram for all 16 letters.
6. BLYTH'S PIPIT? Blyth is a girl's name and you can find typist in the letters:
bl Y T h' S P I pi T
Would DIPPER fit either #13 or #22?
Hi BJ
Margaret's dad, Isles, tells me there is a secretary bird. That's probably the answer for #6.
I do think that the anagram in #8 uses all the letters. The entry form doesn't highlight any one part of the clue. It's probably one of the birds you mentioned with a modifier in front of it. I'll keep looking.
If either, the Dipper fits #22 better than #13.
And I thought this was going to be easy!!!
Lucy
I can't believe I missed secretary bird. Bob took pictures of them on one of his international trips and we are very familiar with them.
Also, I don't like dipper for either 13 or 22.
Could # 16 be ROADRUNNER? I don't know where smash comes in, but I am getting desperate. And how about GOOSE for 21?
Hi BJ,
GOOSE really fits 21 and Margaret says that BOOBY is the answer for 13.
I'm not so sure about ROADRUNNER for 16 but I'll enter it in pencil for the time being.
Still nothing new from me. Sorry!
Lucy
How about CHAFFINCH for 15?
I'm not sure about roadrunner either, but I can't seem to come up with anything else.
Chaffinch could be right.
What about FISH HAWK for #4.
BOOBY is great.
Since we're tossing out ideas in hopes of finding answers, I'm going to suggest GREAT GULL for #30.
BTW . . . how did you get Osprey for #20?
Lucy
17. CARRION CROW
22. SKYLARK
Sorry Lucy,
OSPREY is for #30. Over size (OS) Prey. I just numbered it wrong. Sorry about that. And I think it is really a good answer.
I like your answers for 17 and 22.
Thanks BJ,
The OSPREY is perfect for #30. Thanks for the thumbs up on the others.
Now, how about STARLING for #4?
Lucy
Starling was my first choice for #4 but because I couldn't see how fish fit, I went for Fish Hawk. But then how does skylight fit in. I am not sure about either of them.
BJ, ling is a kind of codfish. Starling is a good answer.
18. JACKDAW
BJ
I think HAWFINCH is a better answer for #15
I definitely think the anagram is limited to just a few of the letters in "hear about this one". But which ones?

Our only mistake was in clue #1.
Niether goose nOR GANder would be found in here. We answered LADY CHAMBER but ORGAN was hidden right in the clue.
Nice score, though!
In the meantime, we have a few more birds to identify on our latest quiz. Clues #8,11,16 and 20 are still "up in the air".
BTW...BJ can you explain WAGTAIL for #1? I was considering TIT for that one.
Lucy
I never liked wagtail, but thought that the tail comes at the end of anything so thought it might work. Also, it was one of the first ones I did, and I think we get better as we go on.
Tit is much better; let's go with it!
I cannot believe we missed organ. I tried to read organ into almost every clue because I couldn't believe organ would not be one of the answers. What a maroon, as my children used to say.
The last three answers to this quiz are a total mystery to me. I have probably spent more time on them than on all the others combined.
11. WHYDAH

I have also scrambled the name of every mountain that has a N,E,W,or S in it, removed the direction, for #20 but have still not come up with a bird. What are you doing for that one? For # 16 I have tried rearranging the letters of every type of road I can come up with, thinking that is maybe how to find the answer. No luck so far.
20. PELICAN (pinnacle minus one n for North).
Thanks for the detailed explanation, BJ. That's a new strategy for me to try in future searches.
I love the PELICAN answer along with your reasoning. Amazing!
Lucy
Lucy,
If we use wrecked a highway for smashed, we can get GRAY HAWK for #16. W R ec K ed a H i G h A w A Y
You have really worked hard on that last clue, BJ. GREY HAWK seems like a stretch. I think I prefer ROADRUNNER. What would you like me to do?
Lucy
Now, I have one last quiz to post before David and I head back to Canada next Tuesday.
