March 01/2021

My brother-in-law from Saskatoon sent me a picture of some tracks in fresh snow and wondered if I knew what they were. Now, you might be thinking, Ed, we know who your brother-in-law from Saskatoon is. Yeah...not that one, the one who belongs to Deanie's sister Shirley. So, as I was saying, Gary sent this picture. Oh, wait, maybe you thought, what the hell would Ed know about tracks. Ok, I will admit, I am a city boy, born and raised, heck before Deanie's mom asked me, one day, to help her pick and shell peas from her garden I had always thought peas were grey and came from a can. Of course I've never hunted either, except for maybe that one day when I hunted around the city of Regina for the 7-11 with the best slurpee. You know, I might be able to identify a set of tracks in fresh snow, if they led from my front door to my truck, and I had just made them. Or, lets say I was given choices, say between that little dog, I forget the name of it, it's named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, and that bear my nephew Thomas owns. I have a high level of confidence I could identify which was which. However I did give Gary an answer, because he didn't include a glove or something to show the scale of the picture, I was able to imagine them being a satellite image of somebody crossing a field of freshly fallen snow after having one too many drinks, or in my case one drink. He accepted.

 So Much Love

There is so much love

in this heart of mine

This much love

can make a dull day shine

So much love

and so much to share

It can chase the darkness

out of anywhere

I was dreaming of dad

he said "Hello son"

I said "I've walked a million steps

with out my laces coming undone

He said "How many?"

in his special way

I said "I passed twenty million

just the other day."

I visited my mom

she was one her knees

She said "Edward

will you help me say my rosary, please

I said "I've got the time mom

we can get it done."

She started with

the Joyful Mystery number one

My sisters they will call me up

just any day

They'll ask if I have

something new to say

I'll tell them I love them

but they know that

I can hear them smile

when we begin to chat

My brothers are my heroes

they may not know

I don't brag about them

so it doesn't show

When we get together

it is so much fun

I have so much love

for each and every one.

That is the complete poem which includes the verse about mom I posted earlier. I have a tune for it so I sing it on my days off. I'm unable to put down the music because I can't play a musical instrument. I guess I could at one time though. Short story.

I used to play the flutophone. When I was in grade four some teachers were looking for an eleventh to complete the Pipers Piping for the Sacred Heart stage production of the Twelve Days of Christmas. It may not have been because of my ability to play, it may have been more likely due to the other little nose pickers in my class being somewhat more clever than I and blowing (pun intended) their auditions on purpose. Somebody decided I would fill out the troop. Little did they know, that, when the eleven pipers marched out on the stage to pipe, only ten would be playing. The eleventh froze when he noticed there was an audience with actual people in it. Didn't even get the pipe to my lips. Worst day of my life... except for maybe the three times I broke my nose in grade one. Jesus! Maybe I should have checked out back then, I was still pretty innocent, I might have made it through the Gates, after a few days in Purgatory of course.

I'm still around

December 1 2020

I've got the blues
I've got the blues
Everyday in the news
I've got the covid blues

People moving around
From place to place
Every one a stranger
You can't see a face
And not just a few
It's the whole human race

Are you on the list
Do you have a pass
To visit a loved one
Behind a panel of glass
So many rules
It's a pain in the ass

I've got the blues
I've got the blues
So much to lose
With the covid blues

A party of five
That's all it can be
That's only three others
Beside you and me
How do you choose
Who will it be

Physical distance
And a mask is the way
To keep people safe
From the numbers each day
When will it end
No one can say

I've got the blues
I've got the blues
Everyday in the news
I've got the covid blues

Stay safe

November 1 2020

I almost forgot about posting for Nov. 1st. I've been watching the Americans self destruct, so this month snuck up on me. On a positive note, we had twenty two little ghouls and goblins, tubes of toothpaste, witches, princesses, superheroes and even Harry Potter showed up. We set up a little table out on the walk filled with bags of chips and the little ones helped themselves. Normally we would have 30 to 35 kids, but expected very few, we considered it a successful night. Lights out at 9. Eight bags left on the table, 20 in the box. The Gustafsons and Heather are coming for brunch today, a belated celebration of Heather's birthday. There's a good chance the box will be empty by the time they head back home.

October 2020

 October 1

Heather wanted to try kayaking so I decided to take a few classes with her. Everything went fine, then we decided to do a bit of fitness paddling. This was when things went a little wrong. First class, we went out to slalom a course of buoys. My rudder broke as I rounded the first buoy. Second class I dumped the kayak, ended up in Wascana lake with all the ducks and goose droppings, I have to admit I got a good workout that night. The last two classes were uneventful, but tough, it's hard to keep up to an instructor in a racing kayak while paddling a sea kayak. Upside is, I stayed dry the last two classes and we're done for the year.

Have a great day
